New Year, New Changes: Will You Go With The Flow or Fight It?

Happy New Year! I am excited to share with you exciting, new journeys and experiences as 2012 reveals itself to all of us.

With each new year comes changes big and small . . . whether we like it or not!  And because change is inevitable, and because we have just entered a new year, I wanted to touch on this subject just a little deeper.

Sometimes we love change, like a new job, a new relationship, or moving to a new city. Sometimes we hate change, especially when it’s not our choice or out of our control. In that case, we’d rather stick with what we know, even though it may no longer apply to our reality.

Either way, change is not always easy, is it? Why is change difficult for most of us? Because change means that we are forced out of our comfort zones, which is why it can be so difficult to embrace.

Here’s a clue: if what you’ve been looking for was where you’ve been looking, you’d have already found it! (Read that sentence one more time, it's a good one.) Doing more of the same harder and longer is usually not the answer. Willingness to change usually creates better results.

It’s true—in many ways, reality is what we make it. Regardless if change is chosen or forced, one of the first steps to change is changing how you think. What you focus on expands because not only are you thinking it, but then you’re feeling and doing, even if you’re not always aware of it.

In other words, if you think change is going to suck, you’ll feel that, you’ll end up acting like it, then that change will end up exactly as you thought. But if you think, “Something good can actually come out of this,” you’re inviting more favorable results. Adapting to change then becomes easier and less stressful because you’re not focusing on the discomfort of the unpredictable.

This year, when change comes your way (because it will no matter what), treat change as a gift, even when it comes unexpectedly.

Ask yourself, “How can I use this to my benefit?” That doesn’t mean ignoring the jarring effect that change can have on how you feel—like losing a relationship, a loved one, or a job—but also make a choice to not stay stuck in a state of loss.
Darwin is often misquoted when people say only the strongest survive. Not true. It’s not the smartest. It’s those who are most adaptable, quickly adjusting to new situations and circumstances.

The idea is to go with the flow and not only accept change, but embrace it as an opportunity to expand yourself and your life.

EXERCISE:  Make a list of all the areas in your life where changes need to happen in 2012. Make sure your list not only covers the situations in your life, but also your environment and how you personally need to change. Start implementing those changes now with a Warrior attitude of 100%.

  12. Thank you Harve, your topic “Change” came at a most important stage of my life – I just lost my father before Christmas on 20th December 2011 – He was a Lion King and we (my family and I) were his pride.  By that I not only mean immediate family but extended relations and employees from a great family orientated outback cattle station in Northern Territory of Australia.

Until the funeral service on 29th December 2011 we all endured sad Christmas gatherings remembering and celebrating our lives with him and learning one of his greatest teachings patience as some of us almost didn't make it to the service due to flooding of roads and having to charter flights to make it to the service on time.  Everyone came from near and as far away as London England to be there. And during this long week we all learnt patience and adaptation – as Darwin's theory goes we will all be adapting to new situations in our lives.

My new planning for the year will include planning my calendar to include time for family contact and not wait until it is too late to have quality visits with all those I hold most dear.

Darwin's theory adaptation to environment will also help me improve my own skin care beauty business as I implement the changes needed to grow.

I look forward to this prosperous New Year!

Love this! Especially the clarification on evolution – it's about adaptation, not strength. The truth is life is in a constant state of flux, so in the end we have to step outside of our comfort zone whether we want to or not. Fortunately, if we approach new territory with an open and positive mind, very often we'll make the best of whatever comes our way.

Harv, this is one of your better blogs.  I think you hit the nail on the head when you spoke to Adaptability.  This is often the concept I use in my psychiatric practice and this is the exact area that most patients get stuck in, inability to adapt, living in the past or living in the future that they have no clue about.  Instead of adapting they freeze up and get lost in dysfunctional ways of coping.  I hope this year I can get more involved in fighting human trafficking, helping victims work past the trauma, through the “Not for Sale” medium and in their fabulous work toward fighting the poverty that drives it.

Hi Harv. Talking about change and updating your blueprint is one thing –  but finding what to do – a plan of action is not so easy a ball game. .Example I have 3 books on comprehensive sex knowledge – which unbelievably the publics of most countries are short of. So said the BBC News Channel Report of a survey. 'Public have a worrying lack of knowledge and understanding about sex a report suggests. But I've found getting publicity for the titles one of which 'The Art Of Sex' should sell10 million – has proved difficult in fact not possible to date. The Joy of Sex is said to have sold 14 Million so far but I've not succeedded ibn getting any journalists other than one to give me an editorial. Can anyone tell me where I've gone wrong and what to do. I've been following so called expert advice on getting publicity but no joy.  Rod Quentin PS My books are all written to enhance superb sex and bonding in lasting marriage. Knowledge that everyone should have

We make an appointment to talk every week and we get together at each other's houses every couple of weeks. We've kept each other on track and help out where we can. For both of us who work at home, it fills a void and gives us accountability.

Last year I found myself stuck and looking in the same old places. Finally I hired a coach to start clearing out the old non-productive ideas/energy. It was slow at first and now is picking up speed. I record the sessions and relisten to one every day on morning walks. Amazing how  I now am doing more of the right things, looking forward to them and getting some good results. With this repetition my daily routine is changing. I am more relaxed as I am better prepared. The chatter box is under some control. I am using my own positive thoughts and it is now easier to see where I can go.

The light finally went off, i am in better shape physically, mentaly, financialy, than 80% of the people that i talk to and see in public.  I am a self starter, I am retired only to pick myself up to another adventure in life, I love to help people, showing youth how to not only get out of debt but to never place their self in a credit problem.. thanks for your inspiration today!

Last year I was forced to make a job change from a field that I enjoyed and had experience in, to a new field that I had some interest in, but not a burning desire to immerse myself into.

As you can imagine, it went terribly.

I found myself deeply depressed over the holidays, even entertaining thoughts that weren't very healthy.

I reached out to a crisis line and posted some statuses on Facebook that got some peoples attention. I spent a day finally being able to talk to someone about what I was going through and how I was feeling.

After being able to vent, a clarity came over me and I re-wrote my resume and began distributing it. An hour after I emailed several out, I received a call asking me to come in for an interview.

I went in the next day, had a great interview and accepted a position doing what I had been doing last year, at twice the compensation level!

I also received two more requests for interviews in the days after the interview. I turned one down over the phone and went on the other one. It just confirmed that my first choice was the correct one.

    I start tomorrow.(1/23) 🙂

To reinforce the gift concept, I only need to look at the changes “survived” to see the hidden gift inside the wrapping paper.  Thank you, Harv!

    Harv!
    I hope you'll agree:
I thought that the one that would survive are the fittest; this will include the strongest, the smartest and most adaptable!
Adaptability, however, is the most important factor out of these three!…Adaptability is most often in our genes, inherited from our ancestors.  Motivation, enthusiasm for life and success, willingness to adapt and change could be acquired. Your contribution in this compartment is enormous! However the seeds need to fall on the fertile grounds!
Appreciate greatly everything that you do!

Harv……after my “new awakening” in Atlanta at MMI new commitments and dedication helped me drop 45lbs for 2011.  Just joined the gym and started toward dropping another 60 before the trip to Maui.  I plan to adjust this goal by April and go ahead for the 80 I really want to do.  Making Wizard and Warrior in Canada was an awesome challenge and we grew greatly….. Then, train the trainer gave another boost in our lives.   Everthing we do is going onward and upward.  Thank  you for the insight to create such awesome courses…See you in Maui
