Why We’re Too Smart And Should Pretend We’re Dogs

There are three ways to handle things if something doesn't go your way: resistance, acceptance, and the golden one, which hardly anybody knows or uses, utilization.

Let's talk about resistance. All pain comes from resistance to what is. This is basic Buddhism: life is suffering because we desire something other, rather than what's presented before us at the moment.

This is not something to get depressed about; there's nothing inherently wrong with desire, but it's how we respond to what life gives us that ultimately empowers us, if you choose to look at it that way. It's one of the greatest life-changing lessons one is fortunate to learn, understand and do something with.

If you don't resist what's going on, there's no pain.

If you don't try to make it something that it's not, there's no pain.

If you don't have judgment and criticism around it, there's no pain.

If you don't add the emotion to it, there's no pain.

Resistance means, “I cannot believe this happened!” So what happens then? Not only did you not get the promotion, which I'm sure doesn't feel great, but now you've just gotten yourself upset. You're not in peace. You're stressed out. You're going to make bad decisions. Now you've compounded the situation, haven't you?

You may say, “Harv, I'm not a robot.” I know. It's too bad, really. Robots are probably happier than we are.

Maybe you could be a dog! Think about it. If a dog doesn't get the bone, it doesn't freak out. They go to sleep or go play with something else. Dogs are happier than we are, yes or frickin' yes?

We're too freaking smart! We're so smart that we're not happy!

Do you see yourself in any of this? Do you see how you bum yourself out by freaking out about what you didn't get? That's resistance.

Acceptance says, “I'm okay. I'm going to take a breath and just continue on and not think about it too much.” That's cool. That's where people are at if they're conscious.

Wizards go to the next level; they go to utilization. They ask, “How do I use this to my benefit?

“How can something good come out of this?”

Here's a declaration I want you to repeat 2 times. Put your hand on your heart and say the following…

I utilize every situation to my benefit. I turn lead into gold. I turn garbage into gold. I turn crap into something good. I turn lemons into lemonade.

That's not positive thinking, my friends. That is the highest form of alchemy. That is true magic. It's taking a situation that has occurred in your life and turning it from a bad thing to a good thing. The good thing comes from asking:

  • “How do I utilize this?”
  • “How do I make my life better because of it?”
  • “What sign is this giving me so that I can go from here and make things better?”

Is this easy or hard? If it were easy the world would be way different. If you're like me and most of my students, it's hard. If you're like the average person, it's really hard.

It's a practice, but it does get easier. It becomes your normal way of being. If you can do this, you will be at the top 1% of all people in the world when it comes to consciousness.

Practice just that one thing for this month.

You can resist what is and freak out about it. You can accept what is and be okay with it, or you go to the next stage and do something extraordinary with it.

Comment below and write ONE thing you're going to choose to utilize instead of resist…We want to hear your answer!

It’s up to you to raise the bar and start living your Level 10 life.

Thank you so much for reinforcing this universal wisdom. I am learning not to react with negativity and disappointment in my business undertakings and ventures or otherwise I get stuck and dwell on it throughout the whole day or even carry it on for extended period of time. It is counterproductive to carry any burdens of negativity because it just clutters the mind and weighs down the heart.

I am learning to clear the mind of judgments and stop resisting the situation and finding new avenues and troubleshooting to find success.

Thank you again for this ageless wisdom and I plan on practicing it in my daily business regimen and in all my relationships.

I know this makes sense, and I know it works, having finally learned all about resistance (and what you resist persists!), but also that it’s not easy to learn how to do without guidance and support. Also, if someone is seriously ill and in a lot of physical pain I know the response is not the same….. even if they have been practicing acceptance and also reframing their view of the situation.

THE WAR OF ART…..by Steven Pressfield is a good book that explains resistance in many terms. How to recognize resistance especially when you resist what you could be doing, your art or whatever by doing something positive..in other words you might be a rescuer and choose to rescue or help someone, instead of taking care of business in your own life. I have had to learn to prioritize my work , my study, my goals, before I help someone else. Since I took your on line Spiritual Millionaire 8 week course…. I have travelled to Nepal and survived the earthquake & made good friends because of it,(I reframed my storyand remained connected and positive) got a job in Portland OR my dream job helping international exchange students, found a roommate to share an apt there, planning how to recreate my massage practice, move, etc…..there has been plenty of opportunity to resist, to throw my hands up and say this is too hard, uncertainty at every turn, but I keep going seeking clarity and trusting for the rest…I am going to be the best ever Community Coordinator and have an awesome practice….every day is the best day ever and I am constantly surprise how people show up in my life to help and I reciprocate.

i serendipitously read this message from you this morning. We are going through extreme change with uprooting my business after 22 years and reopening in a new State. All while building a new house and commercial building for our practice. The enormous financial burden and risk has been extreme, not to mention the fundamental complications that have come across our paths with so many large items to sell, build, and finance. I’ am committed to the move and persevered through every obstacle, standing in awe as the right people come into our lives at the most perfect moment to assist in time of need. Life is good and the thrill of seeing dreams come to fruition makes goose bumps thunder through my body. Envision your dream, stay committed and live your possibility!

I’ve been practicing that for the most part, but when my husband of 10 years “evolved” into a totally different person, I resisted it for a long time because “He” was not the person I married -I even thought about divorcing. I changed to “utilization” and everything is beautiful now. I even realize he’s actually a big asset to my business.
I also realize that the reason for my resistance was because I forgot a universal law – “change is the only constant”. Things change & people change – that’s part of life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, and agree entirely. It’s the flip side of “What we resist, persists.” What we embrace, we grow through. Allow me to express one example: I have always been blind in one eye. Recently I injured my one good eye severely; for a time, I thought that I might be blind for the rest of my life. Frightening; terrifying. But instead of feeling sorry for myself, I just thought, well, that may be life from now on. I began to think of what that would “look” like. I embraced the possibility without flinching. And I avoided the fear and misery of resistance.

Thankfully, a talented surgeon saved my eye. So now, I can see, and I have more to see than I did before.

    Thanks, Harv. Love this one.

Harv, this reminded me or E & R = O…the event/situation & reaction/resistence = Outcome. To get a differenct outcome you need to change your reaction. Of course, I never thought of it as utilizing the situation or lesson. I truly believe when you ask for something you are presented with a situation to learn how to accomplish it. Thanks again for sharing these insightful emails.

Brilliant idea of trying to view any situation in a positive way! So hard to do sometimes. For example today my wife who is constantly blaming and accusing me file a motion with the court against me. After I read the email I became very anxious and in a state of panic. I couldn’t sleep and all day have been suffering at the thought of having to spend a lot of money defending myself.
After reading your article I feel a sense of hope. I just need to see how to use this painful situation. Several ideas: give up attachment from money since I can’t control my spouse or the legal system from taking most of it. Any other ideas?
Thanks for sharing your wise words.
    Very best wishes to all!!

When I see myself in situation where I am aware of doing resistance I ask myself ‘Where is the opportunity here?’ If this is going to show up at later time I imagine how I soak out the whole benefit of it like a citrus fruit and ask myself how can I make benefits from this situation then I feel gratitude f.ex. for the old paradigm as well as for the new. Why? Because without the old no 1 could experience the new the beautiful way to and the work on themself.

    Hi T. Harv Eker,
thanks so much for this post, it is really interesting and being able to apply it helps a lot in real life.
But between the acceptance and the resistance there is a subtle level in which lays the possibility to change the events with our actions. So the problem is to be wise enough to understand when a strong action can make a difference, or when it’s better to accept what happened and move on or turn it better.
Do you have any suggestions about it?
I enjoyed very much reading your blog.
    Thanks for sharing it.
