When you\u2019re the expert, people pay attention to you more and take you up on your words. And if you happen to be passionate about the topic, you can definitely present yourself as an expert.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Present Yourself as an Expert<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s no different presenting yourself as an expert in business than any other field. <strong>What does an expert get in a sales situation? You get credibility before you even get started selling anything<\/strong>. <strong>People come to you and you can charge more money<\/strong>. <strong>And your ability to present yourself as an expert is far less complicated than you might think<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You start off with information that\u2019s of interest.\u00a0 <em>\u2018Did you know that today, you\u2019re spending three times more money in advertising to try and get the same result that you would have gotten ten years ago?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I might be selling marketing programs to make you more effective, but I gave you factual information. That\u2019s real data, and it\u2019s power like you can\u2019t believe. What business owner wouldn\u2019t want to stick around and hear free information about that (You <em>are<\/em> giving that info away for free!)? And you\u2019re presenting yourself as an expert on how you can help them fix common marketing problems.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5007 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2017\/10\/Cress-WP-images-copy-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2017\/10\/Cress-WP-images-copy-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2017\/10\/Cress-WP-images-copy-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2017\/10\/Cress-WP-images-copy-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2017\/10\/Cress-WP-images-copy.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Decide What Is Important to Your Audience<\/h3>\n<p>Before you sell anything, you set up criteria on what would be important to your audience, something that they couldn\u2019t logically say no to. It should be full of interesting data that is of value to your prospects, things that would make them say, <em>\u2018Holy Crap!\u2019 <\/em>or, <em>\u2018I didn\u2019t know that.\u2019 \u2018Hmm that\u2019s interesting!\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of course, you can\u2019t just say you\u2019re an expert; you actually have to know what you\u2019re talking about, so it requires research. You can outsource it or have an assistant gather it, but you still have to take the time to read it, understand it, and know it. If you can articulate it thoroughly, understandably, and passionately, guess what? As far as anybody knows, you\u2019re an expert in that! Time and experience strengthen that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If done properly and with integrity, it can be powerful, but in general so called \u201cexperts\u201d are also overrated. In his book \u201cExpert Political Judgment\u2014How Good is It?\u201d Philip Tetlock collected over 80,000 forecasts over a 20-year study of almost 300 political experts whom he asked a range of questions: would there be a non-violent end to apartheid in South Africa? Would the U.S. go to war in the Persian Gulf? The experts were bad at predicting, and specializing in a field did not improve their answers. Journalists and average people did about as well as the experts when it came to predicting the future.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t negate the impact of trying to present yourself as an expert. It just means <strong><em>you can be as much of an expert as anybody else<\/em><\/strong>. It\u2019s about presenting facts passionately and undeniably. In business, market data or market trends are just as, if not more important\u00a0than knowledge in a particular area.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s your turn!
