The idea of running your own business and controlling your time and your earning potential is incredibly appealing, especially when stories of people who successfully quit their day jobs seem to be everywhere. But how do you know when you\u2019re ready to take the leap?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s a question that I get all the time:<i> \u201cHarv, I really want to start my own business. Should I just quit my job and go for it?\u201d<\/i> My answer is always simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019m going to outline my top three tips for starting a new business before you leave your current job. After being in business myself for decades (and struggling for 12 long years), this advice comes from my firsthand experience \u2014 and could save you a LOT of valuable time and money in the long run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You might want to take notes! Here we go\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">1. Make Sure You Have Money Coming In Before Starting A New Business<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the things that really bothers me is when people drop their steady income in order to start something new. I\u2019m not just talking about a job here \u2014 I mean <i>income<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They go from making something to nothing. <b>Zero. Nada. Zilch.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Let me break it down:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are two types of people in the world \u2014 there are waders, and there are divers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Divers just jump head first into things. They\u2019re the people who are willing to take a big risk, just go for it, and put all their attention and focus in one area at one time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then there are waders. They are the people who like to take it slow, test the waters, and make sure conditions are <i>just<\/i> right before making a move.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So, which one are you? A wader, or a diver? Simply asking this of yourself will help you decide how and when to start a business (or not).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Regardless of who you are \u2014 a wader or a diver \u2014 when you\u2019re starting out in business, <b>it\u2019s crucial that you take care of cash flow.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is no point in jumping in and running hard only to find out you\u2019ve run out of cash two months in. Instead, it\u2019s super important to <b>make sure you have money coming in, so you can give your business the chance it deserves.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So, if you think you\u2019re a diver \u2014 suck it up for a little bit. Don\u2019t lose your income. You can lower it, yes, but don\u2019t <i>lose<\/i> it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because if you\u2019re starting out in business and cut yourself off financially, you won\u2019t be happy, and you won\u2019t be successful. <b>You\u2019ll be stressed, scared, and full of anxiety.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You\u2019ll start coming from a place of scarcity, as opposed to abundance. There won\u2019t be any joy in starting a new business, and it will feel like a burden\u2026 before it\u2019s even had a chance to become a success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">No matter which route you take, be sure to <b>take care of your cash flow and make sure you have money coming in.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6206\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2020\/04\/Cashflow-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Cashflow-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Cashflow-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Cashflow-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Cashflow.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\n2. Perfect Your Side Hustle<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Whether you\u2019re in a business that isn\u2019t doing well and you want to start a new one, or you have a job and you want to start a business that you think you\u2019ll love\u2026 here\u2019s the route I recommend you take:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Keep your current job and work your business part-time until it\u2019s stable enough for you to fully transition.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of course, this would mean working overtime, late at night, and on weekends. But if this sounds unappealing to you, <b>you shouldn\u2019t start a business. <\/b>If you want to be successful in business, you <i>will<\/i> have to work weekends, and you <i>will<\/i> have to work at night. Boo-hoo!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The truth is, when you own your own business, at the beginning, you will have to work your freakin\u2019 buns off, with 1,000% attention and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/the-f-word-difference-between-broke-and-rich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">1,000% focus<\/span><\/a><\/span>. <b>You do whatever it takes.<\/b> That\u2019s how it works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I didn\u2019t make up the rules. It\u2019s just the way it is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">So again, stay in whatever current situation you are in now (whether it\u2019s a job or another business), and work nights and weekends on a part-time basis, earning some income with your new business, until it\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/wealth-rule-1-no-limits-on-your-income\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">making enough income<\/span><\/a><\/span> for you to fully transition. Get Hands-On Experience In Your Field<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This is a big one so pay close attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you&#8217;re starting a new business similar to what you\u2019re already doing, then you&#8217;ve got a nice head start! But if you want to jump into something new and different than what you\u2019re doing right now, what do you have to do? <b>You need to get hands-on experience!<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Think of it as an investment in your business and your future success. Even if it seems like a downgrade at first, think long-term: <b>You\u2019re investing in yourself to gain the knowledge and skills to ensure that your business will succeed.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When I knew I wanted to start my own business, I was 95% sure that I wanted to open a restaurant. So I started working in the restaurant industry. I was a broiler cook, a sous-chef, a host, a busboy, a waiter, and a manager at a pie store. Every night, I went through the garbage to see the boxes they threw out, and who their suppliers were. I had seven different restaurant jobs in four months. I would leave each one, sometimes even before I got paid fully because I was simply there to learn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I learned the most important thing about the restaurant business for me: that I would <i>never<\/i> be in the restaurant business. Can you believe it? This was the most valuable advice I could\u2019ve ever received.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>When you work and get hands-on experience before diving headfirst into starting a new business, you go to school on someone else\u2019s dime.<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You want to be <i>inside <\/i>the business \u2014 not outside looking in. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/speedwealth-8-steps-accelerate-wealth-success-infographic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Success is a learnable skill.<\/a> Learn everything you can about being in that business: the pitfalls, the good stuff, where the money is made, and where the opportunities are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>80% of all new businesses fail within the first five years.<\/b> You\u2019ve heard that statistic 100 times, and it\u2019s true \u2014 except for one thing: <b>65% of all new businesses succeed if the person is already in that industry.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you are creating a new niche within your industry of experience, then the chances of your success skyrocket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Like any other major decision, leaving behind a steady paycheck and benefits in favor of startup life is one that must be carefully considered. Quitting your job without a solid plan in place is financially and professionally irresponsible, and likely won&#8217;t turn out the way you expect.
