Well, I hate to tell you, but it\u2019s just not true.<\/p>\n<p>In the Western world, we tend to focus on money as a source of happiness. But what is money? It\u2019s paper. It\u2019s metal coins. These things have no more power to make us happy than if someone gave us a rock.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone thinks money will bring happiness. Some people think it\u2019ll bring freedom, control, or something else. These are all <strong>meanings<\/strong> people give to money. And if we believe them, but don\u2019t have money, then what? We can\u2019t be happy, we\u2019re constricted, or we have no control over our lives.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not about the money itself, it\u2019s about the <strong><em>meaning<\/em><\/strong> behind the money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The fact that money means different things to different people is proof that beliefs around money are just beliefs \u2014 NOT the truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Figuring out your \u201cmoney meaning\u201d is the first step towards reclaiming your true power. Figuring out your \u201cmoney meaning\u201d is the first step towards reclaiming your true power.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Now, I have a quick exercise to help you get started on this&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>Please grab a paper and a pen and write down your answers to these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What does money mean to you?<\/li>\n<li>Who are you and how do you feel when you have money?<\/li>\n<li>Who are you and how do you feel when you don\u2019t have money?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Done? Great! Now let\u2019s talk about some of the answers this may have brought up.<\/p>\n<p>As I\u2019ve already said, people often relate money to happiness, control, or freedom. They may also relate it to security, success, fun, respect, or power.<\/p>\n<p>So when they have money, they may feel happy, successful, secure, powerful, and so on. They\u2019d go on to define themselves as a smart person, an expert in their field, a role model, etc.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side, when they <em>don\u2019t<\/em> have money, they may feel unhappy, weak, insecure, and more. They may see themselves as a failure, a let down, insignificant, or someone who isn\u2019t good enough for, well, anything.<\/p>\n<p>This is giving money WAY too much credit! Paper and metal should not define who a person is.<\/p>\n<p>See, there are plenty of rich people who aren\u2019t happy. Money doesn\u2019t buy loving relationships, bring good health, or magically heal self-doubt. It also doesn\u2019t offer control over things like natural disasters, traffic, or the economy, and it isn\u2019t required for freedom, either.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how much money we have, our ability to choose our thoughts, words, and actions remain. So does the essence of who we are: our personality, our unique talents and perspectives, and our innate intelligence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The fact is, who you are deep down doesn\u2019t change regardless of how much is in your bank account.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5327\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5327\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5327\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2018\/04\/happy-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/04\/happy-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/04\/happy-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/04\/happy-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/04\/happy.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Who you are deep down doesn\u2019t change regardless of how much is in your bank account.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>So where do all these &#8220;money meanings&#8221; come from?<\/h2>\n<p>Our beliefs around money come from influencers such as our parents, teachers, friends, our community, the media, etc&#8230;. Basically from people we&#8217;re surrounded by who constantly tell us money is the cure for everything, and that people with money are better than those without it, and people without it don\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<p>This all leads to shame, lack of confidence, and the biggie: fear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When we give money meaning, our fear isn\u2019t about losing money, it\u2019s about losing whatever that money means, such as happiness, respect, security, or success.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please keep in mind that I\u2019m not discounting the importance of money \u2014 we obviously need it to pay for food, shelter, clothing, and other necessities. What I&#8217;m saying is that <strong>while money determines our financial worth, it shouldn\u2019t determine our self-worth.<\/strong> We need to separate our money from our <em>value<\/em> as human beings.<\/p>\n<p>This starts with knowing who we are regardless of our financial situation.<\/p>\n<h3>So I\u2019m going to ask you to do another quick exercise&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>Please grab your paper and pen again and take a few minutes to do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Describe who you are without letting money play a factor in your description.<\/strong> Get down to the core of yourself. Are you smart? Funny? Sensitive? A terrible speller? A survivor? Write it all down.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compare and contrast this to your answers in the first exercise.<\/strong> Writing down any observations or thoughts that pop into your head as you look everything over.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My hunch is that this exercise feels a lot different than the first one. Why? Because the truth always feels better. Truth also removes the meaning, and therefore the power, from money. Where does that power go instead? Directly to you.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>In the end, money is just something people give you for solving their problem.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s it. And that\u2019s why the best advice I can give you is to <strong>separate money from the fear-based meaning you give it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You do this by focusing on helping people \u2014 on what problem you\u2019ll solve and how you\u2019ll solve it.
