Do you want to know one of the big things that made my life better in every possible way? Here it is: I decided I don\u2019t believe in the word \u201cNo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

If I\u2019d believed every \u201cNo\u201d people told me, I\u2019d never<\/i> be where I am today. \u201cNo\u201d closes doors \u2014 ones that often don\u2019t need to be closed.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Magic Word That Gets You Past \u201cNo\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

So what do I do instead of accepting a negative response? <\/span><\/p>\n

Well, when someone tells me, \u201cNo,\u201d I ask \u201cHow?\u201d Not in a rude way, of course. I thank them for their opinion, then say something like \u201cI know you think this strategy won\u2019t work, so how<\/i> can we make this happen instead? What\u2019s another way we can approach it?\u201d (And by the way, this works when you tell yourself \u201cNo,\u201d too.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow\u201d is the magic word, and your life literally depends on it.<\/b> It\u2019s the absolute best way I know to get past whatever roadblock is in your way.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, I met an awesome cancer survivor a while back. He\u2019d been to a bunch of doctors in the U.S., and nobody was able to cure him. They told him there was no way.<\/span><\/p>\n

What do you think he did instead of accepting their \u201cNo\u201d? That\u2019s right \u2014 he asked, \u201cHow?\u201d After doing some research, he found a different treatment in Germany, and he made his way there. It worked!<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, time will tell if it\u2019s a permanent solution, but when I last talked to him, he was cancer free. I\u2019m sure you can imagine what would\u2019ve happened if he\u2019d given into his American doctors\u2019 opinions!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow\u201d\u00a0\u2014 instead of “No”\u00a0\u2014 is the magic word, and your life literally depends on it.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Exercise: How To Answer \u201cHow\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

The best way I know to answer \u201cHow\u201d is something my friend Brian Tracy, a great speaker and trainer, taught me. He says that you need to brainstorm and write down 10 solutions \u2014 and I do mean 10, so don\u2019t skimp!<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, I\u2019d love for you to try this right now.<\/span><\/p>\n

I want you to think of a problem you have, then write down 10 possible solutions (If you come up with more, even better!).<\/span><\/p>\n

Just remember the cardinal rule of brainstorming: absolutely NO censoring. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If an idea pops into your head, you must write it down!<\/span><\/p>\n

So\u2026 did you do it? Great! Give yourself a high five. <\/span><\/p>\n

Did any of the solutions you came up with sound like they could work? If so, be sure to try them. Otherwise, you\u2019ll be stuck in the land of \u201cNo,\u201d and I\u2019m sure you know that\u2019s not a fun place to be. True or true?<\/span><\/p>\n

When you are not sure about a solution, just brainstorm and write down 10 possible solutions. <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

YOU Are A Creative Problem Solver<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

As I like to say, <\/span><\/p>\n

“I<\/b><\/span>f you keep doing what you\u2019ve always done, you\u2019ll keep getting what you\u2019ve always got.”<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

So whenever you run into a \u201cNo,\u201d keep asking \u201cHow?\u201d and let your creativity shine through.<\/span><\/p>\n

And in case you\u2019re thinking, \u201cBut Harv, I\u2019m just not a creative person,\u201d<\/em> I\u2019m here to tell you that you\u2019re wrong. We\u2019re all<\/i> creative, just in different ways, like how we research, organize, communicate, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s called creative<\/i> problem solving<\/strong> for a reason, and everyone can do it, even if they approach it in different ways!<\/span><\/p>\n

I teach all my students \u2014 including you! \u2014 not to accept \u201cNo\u201d as an answer. <\/span><\/p>\n

So from now on, every time someone (or you yourself) tells you \u201cNo,\u201d I want you to ask, \u201cHow?\u201d It needs to be your reflex \u2014\u00a0\u201cNo\u201d immediately triggers \u201cHow.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Again, remember to be nice and respectful about it \u2014 defensiveness or pushiness won\u2019t get you where you want to go.<\/span><\/p>\n
