I also know that whenever possible, I should avoid making decisions when I\u2019m in that headspace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why? Because I\u2019m not centered. And when I\u2019m off-balance, I don\u2019t make the best decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What about you? Has there ever been a time when you made a decision while you were in pain, or feeling upset, sad, ashamed, or otherwise off balance? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How\u2019d it turn out?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My hunch is this: crappy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The great news is that there are simple steps you can take to calm your mind and get centered fairly quickly, which will ensure you make better decisions and therefore, get better results in your life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Want to learn more?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Read on to learn where bad decisions come from, how we can get balanced and make good decisions instead, and a powerful exercise that works in any decision-making situation to make things more clear while reducing stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Why We Make Bad Decisions When We\u2019re Out Of Balance<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When we\u2019re unbalanced, it means that our mind has taken over, and it\u2019s in total fear mode. Usually, it\u2019s so loud that we can\u2019t even begin to hear our instincts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So instead of checking in with our gut \u2014 that part of us that knows what\u2019s best \u2014 <b>we react rather than act<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">What does this look like?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Saying yes to volunteering for a cause that doesn\u2019t resonate. (A reaction based on fear regarding how we\u2019re perceived by others.)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Signing on to a business deal that doesn\u2019t feel right. (A reaction based on scarcity fears around relationships and\/or finances.)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Turning down a fantastic work opportunity. (A reaction based on fear of worthiness or ability.)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Just imagining myself in any of those situations gives me an uneasy feeling inside. What about you? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So, how do we stop ourselves from making bad decisions based on fear? <strong>We need to make sure we truly know ourselves!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5587\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5587\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5587\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2018\/05\/know-yourself-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/know-yourself-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/know-yourself-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/know-yourself-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/know-yourself.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5587\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>When we\u2019re unbalanced, it means that our mind has taken over, and it\u2019s in total fear mode.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Pay Attention To Yourself &amp; Give Yourself Space<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This is absolutely critical, friends: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>E<\/strong><b>very time a decision comes up, take a second and check in with yourself<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For this to work, it\u2019s important to understand yourself well enough to know when you\u2019re feeling off-center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What does it feel like for you? Does your brain feel like it\u2019s buzzing? Do you want to run or yell or cry? Do you feel tightness in your throat, chest, or stomach? Do you have trouble getting yourself grounded?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The better you know yourself, the faster and easier it\u2019ll be to know if you\u2019re in the right headspace for decision-making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>If you\u2019re feeling off in any way, don\u2019t make the decision, especially a big one.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Instead, remind yourself <i>why<\/i> you can\u2019t make a decision in this state. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">The most powerful way to do this is to think of a similar situation from the past that didn\u2019t work out so well. Remember <i>exactly<\/i> how you felt in that situation, both physically and emotionally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What do you do instead? <strong>You take a break.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unless there\u2019s a legal deadline or it\u2019s a true life-or-death situation, <b>it\u2019s okay to ask for time to make your decision<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes we feel pressure to answer right away. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Maybe someone else is really pressing on us to make a decision. Maybe we don\u2019t want to inconvenience or frustrate others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Neither matters. The only thing that does? <strong>Making the right choice.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5588\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5588\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5588\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2018\/05\/woman-thinking-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/woman-thinking-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/woman-thinking-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/woman-thinking-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/woman-thinking.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5588\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Every time a decision comes up, check in with yourself.\u00a0If you\u2019re feeling off in any way, don\u2019t make the decision, especially a big one. Give yourself space so you can make the right choice.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Get Back To Center<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes we\u2019re thrown for a loop by an unexpected question or opportunity. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes we\u2019re in the middle of a major crisis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">No matter what we\u2019re going through, there\u2019s always a way to get to that grounded state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>First, a little neuroscience:<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When your emotions get ramped up, your breath becomes fast and shallow, which can trigger a fight-or-flight response (a.k.a. fear), which can lead to bad decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The good news is that scientists have proven that <b>repeated slow, deep breaths change your brain chemistry and make you calmer<\/b>.<b> <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It takes you out of fight-or-flight. So that\u2019s the first thing you can do \u2014 slow, deep breaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ll magically be calmer for hours and hours and all your stressors will go away. But they don\u2019t have to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Just finding moments of centeredness here and there can be all you need to make the right decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now deep breaths do work great, but I want to share<strong> an easy, helpful exercise to amplify their effects<\/strong>. It involves using a mantra:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">Think of a word or short phrase. It doesn\u2019t matter what it is as long as it represents the state you want to be in, like peace, calm, clarity, grounded, centered, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">Close your eyes.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">On the slow inhale, pay attention to your breath. Picture it slowly filling your lungs.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">On the slow exhale, think of your word or phrase.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Repeat as many times as feels good for you.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This exercise may help you go into a meditative state, or it may not. Don\u2019t worry about it. The point \u2014 and the ultimate effect \u2014 is just to focus your energy and slow down your breath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Once you do this, you\u2019ll quiet your mind, which means <strong>you\u2019ll be able to hear your intuition again.<\/strong> And <i>this<\/i> is the place you need to be in to make your best choices.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5589\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5589\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5589\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/2018\/05\/calm-relaxed-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/calm-relaxed-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/calm-relaxed-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/calm-relaxed-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/files\/2018\/05\/calm-relaxed.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Repeated slow, deep breaths change your brain chemistry and make you calmer. <span class=\"s1\"><i>This<\/i> is the place you need to be in to make your best choices.<\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Decisions Don\u2019t Need To Be Stressful<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Making major decisions can be nerve-wracking. For some people, making minor decisions can be, too.
