The present moment is the only moment we truly have because the future is imagined. Fear only exists in the future, and the definition of fear is the anticipation of pain. It\u2019s simple: <b>quiet your mind.<\/b> Just <b>be present<\/b>. When you live in the present, you can\u2019t be swayed by the fear of \u201cwhat if.\u201d Fear can only exist when we get too focused on the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I can hear you now: <em>\u201cWhat if my 401K doesn\u2019t rebound\u201d, \u201cWhat if I get sick,\u201d \u201cWhat if my business doesn\u2019t survive?\u201d<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Guess what &#8211; any of those things <b><i>could<\/i><\/b> happen, but there\u2019s also an equal chance that none of them will. So why let something that hasn\u2019t even happened yet control your happiness? Fear can only exist in the future &#8211; but when you focus on the present, there is no fear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I get it, the \u201cpresent\u201d may not always be pleasant, but even if what\u2019s happening is not so fun (i.e: being stuck at home for the foreseeable future), I can guarantee you\u2019ll be happier when you focus on all of the good things that are happening right here and right now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sure, you may be stuck at home if you are still social distancing, but you have the opportunity to spend more time with your family, focus on learning something new, or just rest and recharge. Practice Being Happy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How can we focus on the present not only when things are going really well, but when things suck, too? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The answer: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harveker.com\/blog\/practicing-happiness-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">practice being happy<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> (And, I want to emphasize the word practice here because any powerful skill requires it.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Anything you practice becomes a habit, and habits become permanent unless we consciously change them. We\u2019re practicing something all the time through our habits, even when we\u2019re not really thinking about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you practice the thought that <i>\u201cI\u2019ll be happy when [fill in the blank] happens,\u201d <\/i>then guess what? You\u2019re always delaying your happiness until [fill in the blank] happens. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not because things will never be great, but because you\u2019ve become a master at being unhappy.
