How To Make Fear Work FOR You In Your Business

Reading Time: 6 minutes

To be an entrepreneur, you need courage. You have to take risks, master new skills, and build relationships. You have to believe in the value of what you offer and be able to show it to people.

It’s a lifestyle that forces you to grow, which for many people can bring up a lot of fear.

Courage isn’t not being afraid — it’s facing your fears and moving forward anyway. And of all the fears that plague business people, there are two that you absolutely, positively, have to handle or they will stop you in your tracks.

Fear #1: I’m Not Good Enough

Every day, the world shows us people who look like they’re better than us. They’re richer, more successful, better looking, younger, fitter or they seem like they have something we don’t.

Celebrities on TV, billboards you drive by, and your Facebook friends’ vacation photos all send the same message:

“Look how great I am and how good I have it. Don’t you wish you were me?”

Many people take that message and compare their up-and-down real life to it.

If you let your mind do this to you, it can kill your business drive. You end up feeling small, weak, and so far down the mountain that you think you’ll never reach the top. You might just give up.

Let’s look at how this works, and then we’ll fix it.

The fear of not being good enough shows up in two ways that seem like polar opposites: fear of failure and fear of success.

When you’re afraid of failure, you’re usually thinking about outside forces you can’t control. But history is full of people overcoming great adversity and creating massive success.

So what you’re really believing is, “I’m not good enough to overcome the challenges that will come up.”

And fear of succeeding is the same. It means doubting you’re good enough to overcome the new challenges that will come up once you achieve some success.

In a moment we’re going to look at a way to overcome this challenge, but first, let’s talk about the other big fear that plagues entrepreneurs.

Fear #2: I Won’t Be Loved

This is a deep one. Humans have powerful, ancient codes in our brain that see approval and survival as the same thing.

We evolved as social animals because our ancestors learned it was valuable to live and work together.

Because of that, we learned to conform to group standards and rules. Because being different could mean rejection. Being rejected could mean getting kicked out of the group, and that could mean becoming hyena food.

So our minds, wanting to keep us safe, tell us not to stand out, not to be different. Fit in, be like everyone else so they’ll like us, and we won’t die.

With this fear so deeply ingrained, it’s amazing anyone ever dares to go for greatness. And yet, we do.

The key is to stop letting fear hold us back and start using it as the motivator it’s meant to be.

How To Turn Fear Into Fuel For Business Success

What if people think I’m a fake?

What if I make a fool of myself?

What will my friends think if I do what I really want?

These questions are all saying the same thing: “I’m afraid no one will love me.”

There’s one simple mindset shift you must make to get this fear working for you instead of against you.

Are you ready? Here it is:

You will be your most lovable self when you are doing what you love!

Think about it. Despite the drive to conform, most humans are drawn magnetically to people who live with passion and gusto. We love to see joyful people living their dreams and doing what they care most about.

So if you truly fear not being loved, the worst thing you can do is stay small, avoid risks, and resist doing what you most want.

My students use declarations to change self-defeating habits, and it works, so I want you to try one now. Stand up and say the following out loud, five times:

“I do what I love so others can experience the most lovable me.”

Great job.

Now let’s tackle not feeling good enough…

Think of someone who has been super successful in life.

Got one? Great.

I guarantee you this — they were not good enough for their eventual success when they started out. Every master was once a disaster.

This is true for me and for anyone who’s ever done something great. Michael Jordan didn’t make his high school basketball team. Albert Einstein flunked math. Helen Keller couldn’t hear, see, or speak!

But they all had the drive to get better. Jordan has said that after getting cut, he started working out harder. When he got tired and thought about stopping, he’d close his eyes and see that list in the locker room without his name on it. That got him going again.

Now here’s what often gets left out of that story. Jordan didn’t make the varsity team at first, but he did make the junior varsity team. Then through his hard work and dedication, he became the star player. That paved the way for all his further success.

So here’s a quick exercise I want you to try right now.

  1. Write down something you are good enough to achieve in your business today, or very soon. Is it landing a podcast interview to reach a new audience? Hiring an assistant to take some administrative work off your plate? Getting a new client that boosts your experience and revenue?
  2. Now look ahead five years. What do you passionately care about achieving — something that you could become good enough for, if you had the right knowledge, the right practice, and the right support? Dream big here and write it down!

Is it a seven-figure income? A New York Times best-selling book? Touching 100 million lives with your work?

Let’s put that big goal into a declaration to make your dream more powerful than your fear. Again, stand up, and repeat the following out loud five times.

“I commit to becoming good enough for ___________ [your dream].”

When you focus on a goal that you truly care about achieving, the fear of not being good enough changes to the determination to BECOME good enough.

Now, step two above mentioned “the right knowledge, the right practice, and the right support.” These are crucial factors that can take years or even decades off your path to success.

But where can you find them? Well, if you’re ready to stop letting fear get the best of you and start learning how to reprogram your thoughts, I have something special for you.
