Positive Focus, Not Positive Thinking | Personal Development Tips

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Positive thinking only gets you so far in life. Find out why T. Harv Eker encourages positive focus as the method to get what you want in life.

How to Switch From Positive Thinking to Positive Focus

It’s one thing to say we make an effort to focus on the positive or to think positively. It’s another thing entirely to actually do it. In fact, most people do the opposite—they focus on the negative or spend their time on negative thinking. We’ve all done it at one time or another, so we can’t be too hard on anyone. But we can’t just let this slip into one of those concepts we take for granted, either.

Positivity is one of the greatest secrets to both happiness and success. You’ve heard it 100 times; you just have to follow through. Eventually, focusing on the positive has to become part of what you naturally and effortlessly do.

Positive focus, not positive thinking

Remember, we want to work toward positive focus, not positive thinking. So, what’s the difference?

Positive thinking doesn’t acknowledge a “negative” reality. It kind of glosses over things. You can focus on finding more opportunities to make money, but that doesn’t change the fact that you have to eat now. You can’t change a car accident by thinking, “If I drive away, maybe nobody will notice.” Positive thinking doesn’t always account for personal responsibility.

Positive focus means looking at the now and getting the most out of it. It means understanding that the now will affect a later future. It also acknowledges the law of duality: that there must be both a positive and a negative side to everything.

Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want

So, by understanding the law of duality, you now have a choice to make in your every day life. Most people spend their day thinking and talking about what they don’t want in life. We hear people say, “I don’t like this. This isn’t going right. This is a problem.” Well, guess what? With that type of negative thinking and focus, you’re only going to get more of what you don’t want. What you spend your time focusing on expands! Your attention has created your reality, and reality really is what you make it.

If you want more money, don’t focus on the money you don’t have. That only places more focus on the lack in your life. A lack of consciousness only leads to more lack. Focus on earning and accumulating more money for whatever reason drives you toward that goal. If you want to create a great new business opportunity, don’t focus on how much you hate what you’re doing now. Focus on discovering a great opportunity. Focus on the solution.

The Zen Difference

Once you understand how to use positive focus to get what you want, you are aware that it all comes down to personal choice. We know positive focus is what will expand for us if we commit to it in our lives. We know that’s what supports us and will make for a happier, more successful life.

It’s a Zen difference. We know that as we paint it, we make it something, and it’s going to be empowering for us to think and focus on the positive. That’s why we do it, not because it’s true! You always must remember that both the positive and the negative are true!

We choose our thoughts not based on true or false. We choose them based on whether they support us or not. The mind is limited in its conscious attention. You can only entertain one focus at a time. So, make sure you choose positive focus.

Your turn! What are your thoughts on the differences between positive thinking and positive focus? Are there any times when “positive thinking” is appropriate? We want to hear from you on this Zen-logical mind-twister!

Hi! I must say a resounding thannnnkkk you sir!!! for sharing such bright lights that rids the mind off the ignorance within it.
For me the difference is slim, positive thinking and positive focus are like fruit and leaves from the same tree. Positive thinking is having positive perception towards life and situations, while Positive focus is taking positive steps and action, and endeavouring to make positive decision in every of your daily activity. Positive focus is self awareness where you consciously act or actively put your positive thoughts to action.
Thanks for this awesome privilege! ☺☺☺✌

Dualism must always be acknowledged. This article was rich in truth and also mentioned that all things have a risk analysis to them, both positive and negative aspects. What I see in a lot of the positive psychology teachers is this inability to acknowledge that although unpleasant the aspect of something is, it can be very positive for life and the individual. One does not always have to have rose colored glasses on, I prefer clear glasses that don’t taint my vision, because I believe in rational outlooks, not just flowery Coercive ideas that leave the person with facing problems in the future.Great article Harv!

Yes Harv, i do believe that at one time positive thinking is vital because naturally we have automatic thoughts or pop-up thoughts that drives us astray leaving us blaming ourselves. So, thinking positively helps to eliminate such thoughts. And these thoughts come automatically in life you can’t eliminate them not even for once.
But i agree with you that positive focus is vital because it takes a divergent role.

Therefore, to my understanding i believe the two schools of thought i.e positive focus and positive thinking are vital in life and they need to be practised together.

Thank you so much for your articles
