Learning to Stay Optimistic During Hard Times | 3 Tips by T. Harv Eker

Reading Time: 4 minutes

It can be difficult finding ways to stay optimistic when life seems to be throwing you curveballs left and right. With the right tools and a positive mindset, you can learn to work for the life you want, be grateful for what you have, and find optimism to carry you through tough times.

How to Stay Optimistic When Times Are Difficult

Think back to a time in your past — five, 10, 15, or even 20 years ago. Maybe you envisioned a happy future making more money, having more fun, a family of your own, or living in a bigger place.

Few things turn out perfectly, but chances are your life saw some growth and improvement in at least one area. A 30 or 40-something-year-old adult’s standards are going to be different than those of a teenager. In that sense, most of us have undergone economic, personal, and career upgrades, even if you might be disappointed with the outcome thus far making it hard to stay optimistic.

The Seasons of Life

All life on this planet goes through seasons. We’ll experience spring-like blooms, the reaping of summer, the preparations of fall, and the chill and severity that winter brings. These cycles affect us individually and globally. At times, even the world as a whole experiences something like a severe economic winter.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that we’ve all experienced times of growth and improvement in our individual lives. Even during periods of lack and want, we can look forward to a time of prosperity again. All it takes is readjusting back to a mindset that focuses on the future so we can stay optimistic. That starts with accepting and embracing the now.

3 Tips to Stay Optimistic During Your “Winter Times”

By far, the toughest cycle we’ll experience is our “winter times,” whether it’s cold outside or not. Even the grasshopper needs to be told by the Ant to prepare for winter, so the old story goes. The other seasons are often times easier, if not more enjoyable.

As tough as things can seem during harsh times, winter provides the opportunity to recover and start planning for the next spring ahead—the same kind of spring that gave us relief before and will bring us relief again. With this mindset, we can find ways to stay optimistic despite the cold. These 3 tips for learning how to stay optimistic can help you even in the most difficult of times:

1. You can do this by defining what you want to create. Be specific. Sometimes luck helps, but there’s no way to get what you want until you’ve defined what you want, and, just as important, why you want it. Your motivations will steer you through any winter storm.

2. Also, taking inventory. List those attributes that enhance the quality of your life right here and now — family, friends, the network of colleagues who might help you take that next step, and resources that are helping you economically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. You might be surprised at just how many resources are at your disposal.

3. Lastly, be grateful. For every “negative” thing that may be happening to you, someone else is likely undergoing more pressing challenges. Gratitude has a way of dispelling fear, anxiety, and a self-defeating attitude. You can’t focus on what you don’t have when you’re grateful for what you do have. How we progress through the seasons isn’t based on what we don’t have, or what we might’ve done or not done in the past. It’s about how we use what we do have now to stay optimistic and to sow seeds of growth that we can reap later.

I want to leave you with one last thought. Winters can seem to go on forever, but they don’t. That’s as true for the world as it is in our individual lives. When in ‘winter’, use this time to re-focus, heal, enjoy your blessings, and start planning your next spring now.

Give us your thoughts on life’s “seasons,” whether they apply to your personal or professional life. Where are you in your life’s cycle? How do you navigate your seasons? Leave me a comment and let me know what you think about these tips for staying optimistic during difficult times. Each and every one of your comments is meaningful and valuable.

For Your Freedom,

    Dear Harv,
I agree with you, season’s in life and how it affect the emotions of individual positive or negative. And if we do not know how to manage and use best of those time especially winter season.
I am in winter season in my professional life for past more than a year, no job, no work. Initially I could not understand why this happened to me and making everything to comeback, but could not succeed.
Then I read few life lessons of successful people and that helped me understand the importance of time. I started building positive thinking and controlling negative ones.
Building repository of knowledge in my field and developing new one to prepare for next season.
I continue to build the same in present.

Doing a plan and working on it is what I am gonna do every day. I think it’s quite important to reach your goals. If you are not planning, you will do it for nothing. We are just living 28.105 Days (men) or 29.200 days (women) statistics before we die. What are you waiting for.

I never thought about seasons but about the waves in my life.
I feel like I am in spring now: I am back to your book ( I red it tree years ago but got lost in day-to-day problems). Your book helped me tree years ago when I just went on my own (don’t you think it belongs to appreciation?)
Anyways, to stay optimistic I watch some comedy movies, find something good that I still have and learn lessons from situations.

You mentioned the dreams of our youth are modified w/age. Yes, I agree & w/that modification must come the understanding that we may not be where we planned in our youth, we (probably) have as much, if not more, to be grateful, than when we were young.
The seasons is something I had not realized, but also agree w/you. It makes total sense.

I’ve learned that there is always a lesson wrapped up in them and that’s how I’ve been able to stay optimistic overall. We all have our tough days and I still struggle to keep pushing towards my goals on days when depression tries to rear it’s ugly head but I’m getting better and quicker at recognizing it and putting it back in its box on the shelf and working towards my goals despite how I feel.

I can see how life’s season apply to my personal and professional life. I’m currently in Winter as many different aspects of me are dying, old thought patterns and habits. I’m also looking at my career and how I can change that. I stay optimistic in times like this by practicing gratitude and doing things that I love doing, like having a bath with candles or watching my favourite movie. In my experience the worse the Winter the more wonderful the Spring and Summer. Because I’ve weathered the storm and kept optimistic a renewal of me occurs after that period, I know that my level has risen and I am stronger than ever before, the ever better. So in a way I relish the Winter,

It’s unbelieveable how life works in cycles. It’s inevitable. No matter how much you wish your ‘spring’ times lasted forever, ‘winter’ sooner or later does come. The lucky part is that every time i come out of winter, i come out stronger and happier than i was before. It makes you prove yourself who you really are. Right now i’m getting out of winter, and i totally agree with you when you say that motives and principles are really important for those times. It keeps you on track

EXCELENTE.

But now I know what I was doing wrong. And now I am changing, I am taking my self out of my confort zone, and I am putting my self in the uncomfortable zone that I used to avoid. When I decided to quit my toxic job in May, I had no other job on the line but I was so optimistic that something would pop up and whenever I was asked why I left my job without a new one, I would say “My offer for a new job would soon come”. June 15th, I got another job that pays double my previous salary with benefits I was not getting from my previous job. I was optimistic during my winter period.. .

I believe life’s seasons give us choices and it is in how we look at those choices and how we react to them that effect our lives.. my stage is my life right now is my career and I am looking to make a positive change to make me happy, knowing that there are no accidents I truly believe everything happens for a reason and I welcome the unknown. It is when I am most uncomfortable I know I am growing. It is better to have an optimistic outlook because it makes the ride more enjoyable.

It has shown me that I still have some goals to set, discipline to develop while maintaining my peace and gratitude during this time. I am excited about my future and how God is going to use you to help me succeed. Blessings to you.

I totally agree with you and appreciate your teachings. The seasons of life in my view are never totally separate, you might experience winter in your financial life while experience spring in your work life or summer in your relationships.

There is always something to be grateful for and I believe that as long as we show gratitude to God, the universe and the people in our lives we will make it through all of our winters.

the seasons have an impact on my well-being. in the winter I’m lethargic as if I was falling asleep. I would be sitting at home most of the time. This is the time in which I often wonder why life is so colorless and when spring comes, everything starts to be different colored. well-being is also much better. then I want a lot more. I have more energy. although this does not translate into my finances, unfortunately

Chantal, I saw your comment and wanted to give you a perspective to consider. I don’t work for Harv, I am actually someone also following his program.

First off, I am sorry to hear about your Father’s passing and and to read that you have a serious illness, and wish you well.

Having said that, while you are looking for options to increase your wealth since the $$ you had from your father’s death will dry up soon — I imagine (whether you realize it or not) you have a good perspective / insights to share as someone who is retired, on a fixed income and will an illness. I imagine there are many people in the world going through a similar situation. So, as an option to consider for building wealth…why don’t you try researching how to start a BLOG? Your blog can focus on your daily life in this situation (just write how you feel), you can share lessons learned in your life with your illness and how you coped through very hard time, you can discuss who/what you turned to for help.

Then, after you have some content published….share this BLOG on Facebook, or with friends and family. You never know, this could catch-on and become a source of inspiration for others!!

God bless you, and good luck. A quote I live by in this game we call life: “Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing about.” -Benjamin Franklin

Harv, I think that there are people who do not have winter, only two seasons, summer and autumn and, however, have other different forms of habitat to other people who are in four different worlds, or know it is cold or know is hot; that cold medium or medium hot does not go with me, so tell me that I am a visceral, we must have the humility to obey with discipline. Try new challenges to break paradigms, in the administration of the monkeys, as the resistance to change overrides all objective and let me carry, to not resist the new current that is imposed to me, then I environment I like a carburetor from a vehicle and then run to high speed and should be grateful with you repair it affected this vehicle. This gave it, because I’ve lived it intensely, and after that I read a part of your book; turn me slightly with much skepticism, well thanks, the layout is important and contribute to give and receive, beyond go, forward; back or to pick up momentum, again thank you.

Wow, on point and as always the kids had sparked similar inspiration using the 4 seasons to represent the 4 new kittens born just a week ago, so using the correct words you’ve illerstrated the perfect examples to allow my mind to be more forgiving of myself. Thank you.

After a short unusual bout of warm sunny weather I noticed the almost instant change in the the behaviour and reception from the people around me, then true to British weather a storm blows in, rubbish blows out the bins around the car park and the world retreats, I do love the wind as its attached to fond childhood memories and the cat shooting up the garden with wind up her tail makes me smile every time.

I do remember thinking the very same thing about the chance to be prepared to enjoy the summer season. The wind in particular reminds me of change, blowing away the cob webs as such. Also the battle as your faced in ts path to the journey coming in the opposite direction.

Bit like all the thoughts and feelings as they can be as changeable as the weather, I feel blessed I’m that way though and don’t fear facing my emotions because the further I delve into finding the solution the quicker and further forward the switch seems to push me.

This article knocked on my door in the (my) winter. Leading me to appreciate what I have (been grateful), it has refocused my attention to seeking solution instead of reciting the ‘why me’ question that clothes my winter.

I believe that your book, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, has come to me not just as a divine gift/key to usher me out my winter but to also keep me above future ones, if there will ever be.
    Thanks.

Hey Harv I’m not what season I’m in right now because Ever since I read your book I’ve been writing three things I am thankful for every morning and because of that and starting to managing my money what seemed like it was winter quickly changed into something else I can’t tell now if I’m in winter summer spring or fall I just know this feeling feels good and I never wanna let it go. I borrowed some money to pay my rent like I’ve done before only this time I was so open to receiving it felt so great when I got the money ice cream thank you thank you I am a money magnet Before I would be so upset at everything while I was getting the money that I had to pay it back in the next two weeks that still haven’t even crossed my mind I’m going to pay my rent and I’m going to manage the rest of the money before I would just put it down and be mad edit that I borrowed it So thank you Harv I know now that I’m on the right track I know I will be free soon.

So uplifting. I am coming to the end of a long winter that has been tough with the loss of 2 nieces, one 22 yrs old, the other 7 months old. When these things happened I was devastated and it turned up in each area of my life, except my relationship. My partner is the most amazing support for me, in fact, if not for him I would have had it a lot harder this year emotionally. I am just getting back to fixing my mindset, have set up a shopify store and trying to get my you tube going for my online business, Kangen water. Your workshops have inspired me and once I am on the other side of my financial drought, I will be joining your education as a student. I dearly want to teach, I have always been told I am a good teacher but for some reason have always been the student. As the saying goes, when the student is ready the master will appear. Thank you Harv.

Thank you for tips, and the reminder of how to use what we have to stay optimistic. Going through the winter times can be depressing, and a person may question themselves of why they got started in the first place and is it worth it. Being a person of faith, when the tough times do come, I will always be persistent and continue to follow through, because I already know the outcome and that victory is mine.

The last three years of my life there has been test after test from being unemployed then an accident causing head trauma and ear damage doctors surgery, hearing issues ,tinnitus along with other mental health issues ,I flood in my home sewer and water freeze ups ,I had just given up didn’t want to live ,then one day I woke up and was introduced to meditation and power of the mind and body those three words came from a voice inside and I listened for the first time ever ,I am on government assistance no money cant buy food I hit rock bottom anyway I listened to this voice ,I have never read a whole book in my life and I am 58 years old ,any way the three words ,meditation, mind and body were the words I heard over and over again so I started to read only to learn about the art of awareness this has changed my life as far as my mind goes ,my main goal was to understand the capabilities of the mind and body time went on and I kept reading and learning and today I am a different person ,still unemployed and broke broke ,but my state of mind is incredibly and I keep reading ,but three days ago I stumbled onto you I read and I listened to your webinar and something clicked ,and again a voice totld me yes this is it so I keep reading and I keep listening to you now I want more ,my main goal is to remain happy but I want more ,I want abundance in all areas of my life after listening to you I knew this was my opportunity, being on welfare or government assistance really I cannot afford it but also I cannot miss out on your teachings the voice inside is very persistent this time so I without a doubt will be scraping ,priority now is to follow you and to listen as far as the season I have gone thru 8 season and now its winter it’s my season to prosper and I will but I must sow these seeds and grow ,problem is I’m 58 and I dont know what I want to do ,that will come to me ,on the 20th of Dec there will be a huge shift as I’m enrolling in your class

Well it’s summer in the US, but an economic winter for many this year. I very much like the seasons analogy. Looking back it is clear to see the cycles, and the ratio – 75% great to 25% tougher, but often still great.

Even the summers show up – where possibly the effort seems very intense for apparently not as proportionate reward. But fortunately the shoulder season are always there, with renewed hope and energy in Spring, and the rewards in Fall.

Seasons come and go. Once we feel better once a little worse. I am born an optimist, I always have inner joy regardless of the “season” and I am happy

Hi dear, all are amazing, your tips are encouraging to letting us know about life does not stay always the same example of the four seasons is awesome. As a tour operator I have seen great up and downs in my life. Soon after 9/11 tourism in Pakistan collapsed and then after a long time recovered for last three years, this year the COVID-19 left the worst impact on the tourism industry all over the world. So, I would say that we should not be disappointed on the worst days of life and proud on the best days, rather we should face all.

This is all so true. I have never been this low in my whole entire life. It felt like i hv reached a dead end in a pitch black tunnel. The only one i hv left was faith that God will not forsaken me. And the pandemic hit and i got all the time in the world to play with my phone browsing and reading and learning. The more knowledge i have the brighter things become. And all this learning has somehow taken my focus away from my troubles. And things and opportunities started knocking. It is not smooth sailing but i have learn to refocus negative thoughts and feelings to learning something new and i stumble across this. Out of everything that i have learned, the teachings i learn here resonates best with me. It is so good to know that spring comes after winter.

You can’t focus on what you don’t have when you’re grateful for what you do have. How we progress through the seasons isn’t based on what we don’t have, or what we might’ve done or not done in the past. It’s about how we use what we do have now to stay optimistic and to sow seeds of growth that we can reap later.

    Hi Harve,

Wow this so inspiring, infact in times like these where I have the Lord Jesus Christ as my very present help in times of trouble, you can agree with me that we are leaving in a troubled time. I am a Visa Consultant and I have been badly affected financially by the covid-19 pandemic as embassies are still closed, airports are closed. I am an SMEs entrepreneur trying to establish myself as a business man and it is very difficult at the moment due to the pandemic. However i would like to express my gratitude to the most High God,my family, friends and people like you who are encouraging and supportive during this trying time, indeed there is time for everything and I am taking the opportunity to reflect on my life,my habits and the way I do things, praying, caring for others, spending enough time with my family, planning for the future if the Lord will,I am preparing myself how I will emergency when the pandemic is over and I have managed to invest no in shares in two different companies listed on Malawi Stock Exchange this year starting in February 2020 and July 2020 although I have started with only 15,910 shares combines, I believe that the same Jesus Christ who gave thanks to His father when he was given a few fish and loaders of bread and after giving thanks to his heavenly father he commanded his disciples to gather the 5,000 men in small groups and distributed the food to them, they ate and they were full and kept the remains,I is the same God who will increase the shars for me.I am really grateful for the investment and I have put into action my long time dream of becoming a shareholder which today has started to materialise.
Just felt like sharing with you.
    Thanx

    Hi Herv.

First of all, let me say a big thank you for the tips you shared on optimism during Winter Times. It resonates with my personal philosophy as a Christian. The Bible encourages us to give thanks in all situations that we find ourselves (see 1 Thessalonians 5:8). I have found in my own experience that when I give thanks in times of crisis, solutions appear sooner than later, and the winter time is abridged instead of being extended.

Thanks for sharing these proven tips.

    GOD bless.

    Olajide Ajani.
