How to Stop Being Unmotivated and Find Your Why

Reading Time: 3 minutes

November 7, 2017 By T. Harv Eker 18 Comments

A question I frequently get asked by students from around the world that is so simple, yet very powerful is: How do I go from being unmotivated to motivated?

Unmotivated and Unsure? Find Your Purpose

The answer always boils down to just three letters and one word: Why?

Many people are unmotivated because they don’t have a why that resonates with them. They don’t have a REASON for being motivated. In other words, the lack of motivation is a kind of inertia.

The law of momentum states that a body in motion will tend to remain in motion and a body at rest will tend to remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. This means you’ve got to get yourself moving in the direction you want! Furthermore, that’s why you’ve got to have your why. You need to have your reason for why you want to do what you’re thinking of doing.

This can relate to wealth, health, relationships, moving cities, and changing jobs; it could be about anything, but the bottom line is you’ve got to have a why.

Asking Yourself ‘Why’

Jim Rohn once said, “The bigger the why, the easier the how,” meaning that if we have a good enough reason or a good enough purpose for doing something, the how will come. You’ll get it done, even if it doesn’t make sense right away.

There’s a story I once heard about a slender woman who was driving with her son. Something happened with the tire, and while the son was trying to fix it, the jack fell and it pinned him under the car. He was losing his life, but somehow this woman lifted up the corner of the car for him to get out. How crazy is that?

Scientists have done research on this. It turns out we have the extreme and unique ability to push ourselves in times of need. It’s the why, or our reason, that prompts this ability.

Miracles can happen when you have a big enough why. Why is whatever you want important to you? For example, why is money important to you? Or why is wealth important to you? Why is freedom important to you?

My ‘Why’

People ask me this question all the time. They say, “Harv, you went through so much struggle early on in your career. Why didn’t you give up?”

The answer is because I had a bigger why than any struggle that I could entertain or have come over me. My why, although not overly enlightened, was very simple: I needed to prove something to my parents.

I needed to prove that they were wrong when they told me I’d never amount to anything, and that I’d be broke and begging them for money.

Again, my why is not enlightenment, because it stems from fear. However, once I started getting a little bit of a financial security, my why turned into something different.

I wanted to be able to do what I wanted with my time, my energy and my life. I didn’t want to have to be beholden to anyone or anything, and I just wanted to be free. All I wanted was freedom, so that became my why. Then I became fully financially free.

Let me give you one more clue here about your why, because it’s one of the most important things you can ever discover. First, your why should have two sides to it. First is you. Your why should serve you. Second, your why has to be bigger than you. Whether it’s for your community, your country, or the people in your business, your why needs to be big.

If you have those two why’s, one for yourself and one to help others or the world, you’ll be motivated.

Without a why, you’ll be unmotivated. It’s as simple as that.

What is your why? Why do you do what you do? Further, why do you want to be successful? Why do you want freedom? Leave me a comment below, I would love to hear from you!

For Your Freedom,
unmotivated

Why am I taking these courses in order to prepare myself to be rich? And why do I want to be rich? Ten years post retirement and I am financially broke. And I am scared. (Yes, anticipation of pain). My husband’s serious illness wiped out our meager savings and debt had me a slave to handouts and tremendous embarrassment..This seems to an unbroken cycle in my family. My grandparents, my parents, us, my children and now my grandchildren. I want to break the cycle and teach others to do it also. I want to look forward to my future healthy, wealthy and wise!

      Hey Miryam,
Thanks for sharing your words. You are very brave for wishing to brake this cycle.
I believe that our mind is very powerful and can really take us where we strongly aspire to be.
You are driven by a good purpose, teaching others how to improve their relationship with money.
I believe that creating good attracts good, and you will see this in your life. Keep strong!

Why am I taken this course. Because I have notice our communities are becoming very ill. Mental illness is at a new level high. Social media phones are our best friends. We are not paying attention to our earth. Litter is everywhere animal suffering, people walking around like zombies. Not connecting anymore. I want to leave a legency and a different mindset on how to go about mental illness. With a more hands on approach and connecting to a tribe again. That will bring me the fiances to purchase pieces of land and ocean. Where nature be it plants animals reptile insects are allowed to be free from what humans do. And create a tree house sustainable eco friendly retreats within in these parcels of land and ocean. And re teach people to get away from the hussle bussle and reconnect to the only things that lets us live. Earth. If she goes where will we be? I will teach people that they dont need plastic or the latest gadget. They need nature and learn that community can be a positive thing when restored and go back to our primal roots. Yes our technique has advanced us. But we still have our primal needs. I want my great grand children planting trees not going about and seeing them in museums.

      Hey Linda,
Your words are so beautiful! I feel you. I am still in my twenties, yet I have the same feelings towards our society and how technology has changed the way we behave and connect.
As always, there’s the good and the bad, and I believe that out role is to bring back awareness towards that need of human connection that is among our most primary needs.
And never as today we need to come together to raise human consciousness and build communities that look at creating a sustainable future for the generations to come!

My kids are growing up fast and I wanna be able to give them a bright future entirely different from mine. At the same time i Want to help a lot of people because i Know how depressing it is to be in a situation where you need financial help and no one is offering you any help.So I promised myself that if Igain financial freedom I will try tohelp those who will need my help financially.

Too be able to give to causes that I believe in: health, children’s needs, medical, hunger, values, to save our country. These are the things that move me. This is my WHY?

My global “why” is that I am bringing a food product to market that helps save the user time, labor, and waste and is very diverse so they are increasing their creativity and getting a big bang for their buck. My personal “why” is that this is my legacy. I do this because it is my way to say “thank-you” to The Infinite One who has brought me into this world and provided me with these intrinsic talents. I want to be successful because then I can do more philanthropic things and can mentor and help others to find their “why” and fulfill their innate potential. It is my way of paying it forward. I want freedom because I prefer to live my life achieving victories than to be a victim.

My why is because I’m done listening to other people’s stories about their adventures and not having any of my own, I want to have stories to tell. I want to leave a legacy and make a difference. I want to explore. I’ve waited too long, now is the time to go after what I want, with all I’ve got!

I only started in this company in May this year and I was pregnant, two months down the line I got sick and the baby wasn’t growing as he should. My doctor book me off for a week and said I should just take the maternity leave since I was travelling quite a long distance to and from work.I took my leave in July come end of the month I did not get my pay.So I delivered my baby and after 6 weeks I was forced to go back to work since I was not getting any income, that was in September to my surprise again no pay come October no pay remember I have a small baby without money with my savings I had to travel to work plus I am expected to visit different sites with What exactly
So my big Why is to get another job and be able to provide for my baby.
I also have my company and I have put couple of proposals and I believe I am going to get those deals.

    My WHY is huge.
However it has only come to me now I am in my sixties.
Far from stopping me it has made me realize that I have less time in which to accomplish the message that I wish to present to the world.
Why for me it is to break free from a constant cycle of want and need that goes back generations through my family. I need this broken as I have identified and seen that all children from all communities CAN suffer this problem.
They can be ignored and not guided and taught OR they can literally be loved and protected to suffocation point.
In any of these cases these children are not taught THE most important thing in their lives.
They are not taught that they have a mind and a soul and should travel their paths in their OWN unique way.
Not the way of their parents or grandparents, teachers or guides.
I wish to help the innocent to become who they were born to be. To be the unique light they were placed on this earth to be.
I no longer have age on my side BUT I now am learning and have learned wisdom.
I believe I will continue to learn until I can be of no more use.
    That is not now .
I yearn to help create generations of people who know their true value and can walk with their heads held high knowing they in turn help others to achieve.
My quest is just starting. It is nowhere near finished for me.
