Whether your goal is to improve your business or to work your way up the ladder, marketing plays a huge part in getting ahead.
With a business, marketing includes ads, press releases, promos, and more to get attention and purchases from your ideal customers. For employees, it’s an informal kind of marketing aimed at the people who determine your salary and promotions.
Regardless of your situation, the same steps can make your marketing process easier, more productive, and more successful. Want to learn more? Read on!
Step 1: Learn From Others
Marketing is a learnable skill, so the first thing you need to do is what? Learn! Find people who’ve successfully marketed products or services and imitate them.
Marketing For Your Business
Pay attention to the marketing in your world. What resonates with you? What doesn’t? What trends do you see? A good rule of thumb is that if a marketing tactic is repeated, it works.
If a successful person or company has written about how to market, read it; if they offer a class, take it. For example, I have a free web class called “The 500 Million Dollar Secret” where I teach the specific step-by-step technique I’ve used to help bring in hundreds of millions of dollars through my business.
Marketing Yourself At Work
Pay attention to who gets promotions. What projects to do they work on? What makes them stand out? How would you describe their work habits?
Ask if you can take them out to lunch one day. Explain that you want to advance your career, too, and you’d love to get their advice. (Just make sure they know you’re looking for mentoring, not the inside scoop so you can take over their job!)

Step 2: Know What You’re Selling
Remember that you’re not selling a product or service, you’re selling a solution to a problem. So if you’ve got a cell phone, you’re not selling a phone, you’re selling a way to easily connect with others.
In other words, regardless of whether you’re a business owner or employee, you’re selling your product, service, or skill that fulfills a need and helps others.

Step 3: Be An Expert Problem Solver
Whatever problem you’re solving, you’d better be freakin’ great at solving it if you want to be successful. You’ve also got to let people know how amazing you are, too.
Don’t forget—when people think you’re awesome, they’ll tell everyone they know about you, and word-of-mouth marketing is as powerful as it gets!
Marketing For Your Business
In addition to solving problems well, you need top-notch customer service, too. This applies to all customer/client interactions. If your business has online reviews, be sure to reply to reviewers, address issues, and amplify those 5-star ratings!
Along the way, you can share success stories, ask happy customers for testimonials for your website and marketing materials, and look for other ways to showcase your problem-solving skills, like blogs or videos.
If you keep all this up, one day you’ll be talking about all the hundreds (or thousands!) of people you’ve helped!
Marketing Yourself At Work
Don’t just do your job well—go above and beyond. The more you prove yourself, the more people will see what you’re capable of, which leads to more responsibilities and higher pay.
And don’t forget to toot your own horn. Your successes don’t mean anything if your manager doesn’t know about them! (Just don’t forget to mention help you got from co-workers along the way—being a team player is important, too.)

Step 4: KISS (Keep It Stupid Simple)
So many people worry about having the best-looking websites, the cleverest copy, the most ingenious promotions. Don’t worry about that. Just focus on making sure people understand exactly how you’re helping them.
Marketing For Your Business
“If you’re sick of not having enough money, then I can tell you how I became financially free and help you get there, too.”
“ If…then…” This is a great way to explain the problem and your solution, and it’s the headline for your business. From there, you can go into more detail about how you’ll solve their problem.
Marketing Yourself At Work
Whether you’re pitching a plan for an in-the-moment issue or reflecting on past successes, you want to be as clear about the problem and your solution as possible.
It’s important to keep your audience in mind. Obviously, your boss should understand details, but others might not, so adjust as needed.
Whew! Did you get all that? I know it’s a lot, so here are the steps again:
1. Learn from others.
2. Know what you’re selling.
3. Be an expert problem solver.
4. KISS.
