Confidence. It’s a powerful word derived from the Latin word “confidere,” which means “to trust.” To feel self-confident is basically trusting yourself. Can you remember a time in your life when you felt the power of confidence? A time when you felt unstoppable… on top of the world?
Now, imagine you could feel that powerful feeling more often. What impact would that have on your career? Your relationships? Your choices?
Being confident helps you trust yourself. It gives you the courage to seize opportunities, take more chances, and reach the next level in your life.
But how do you find the confidence that you’ve been lacking? How do you move beyond the feelings of self-doubt and insecurity that are holding you back? The answer lies in understanding your mind.
Your mind’s primary focus is survival. While it helps keep you safe, it can also prevent you from asking for that promotion, approaching an attractive person, or starting your own business.
But there’s a way to train your mind… and it begins with trust.

1. Get Experience
There’s truth in the old saying, “experience is the best teacher.” In order to trust yourself and your abilities, you have to have a track record of success. While trust isn’t built overnight, it is honed by taking small steps and focusing on the small victories. Eventually, those small wins add up!
2. Keep Learning
Nobody ever does anything well the first time they try. At least not without having a little bit of help. To be confident, you have to know what you know! Ask a mentor, read and research, and do whatever is necessary to get the information you need. At the end of the day, knowledge always conquers fear!
3. Gain Momentum
I have a saying, “One step in the right direction is worth 100 years of thinking bout it.” You can think about being successful your entire life, but until you take the first step, you’ll never get there.
Start small, but move forward. Your movement creates momentum, and that’s how you become more confident!
4. Trust Yourself
Your mind has a voice, and sometimes, that voice is negative. You think, “what if I fail?” or “what if this doesn’t work?” This type of mental chatter paralyzes you and keeps you stuck in your comfort zone.
While most people beat themselves up for these feelings, that’s the opposite of what you should do to settle these feelings. What’s more effective is to treat your mind with respect and make it feel good about what you are doing.
One of my favorite techniques is simply saying these four magic words: “Thank you for sharing”, and then act anyway.
5. Know That You Can Handle What Happens
Sometimes, things just don’t work out the way we plan. And if we really want it to work we’re left feeling unhappy, embarrassed, and stuck.
But by understanding that the result is not always something you can control, you can let go of those feelings quickly and not let them bother you so much.
Trust that you are on the path that is right for you. Don’t focus on the result, focus on the process and watch as your confidence continues to grow. You have the power to create the life you want to live. So don’t let anything bring you down.
