5 Tips To Overcome Your Fear Of Public Speaking

1. Stop focusing on yourself

One of the main reasons people are afraid of public speaking is because they are focusing on themselves — how they look, how they sound, and how they’ll be received.

Instead of focusing on yourself, focus on your audience and how you can help them learn and grow. When you shift the focus from yourself to your audience, everything will change!

2. Speak about something you’re passionate about

The way you present your speech is extremely important to how your audience receives it.

But equally important, in my experience, is making sure that you really believe the talk you’re giving, that you care about the ideas, that you stand behind the concepts, that you feel like you’re doing something meaningful – and delivering something truly of value to the stage.

Because if that’s the case, you’ll likely feel much more comfortable and confident delivering your message, you’ll feel more qualified to deliver something you are passionate about, and you’ll be more likely to impress your audience.

When you share what you know, it not only builds trust with your audience, it cements you as a thought leader in your field.

3. Practice, practice, practice!

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect,” and it’s true. While you might not give a perfect speech, practicing will help you feel confident when you step in front of the audience.

Start by reading your speech out loud to yourself. When you feel ready, perform your speech in front of a mirror. Watch how you move, listen to your tone and your speed, and make adjustments as you go.

4. Test your material in the real world

Once you’ve perfected your speech in front of the mirror, it’s time to test it in the real world. You don’t need a sold-out crowd to test your presentation, in fact, my very first public speaking engagement was in my living room with 8 of my closest friends! The size of the audience doesn’t matter.

The key is to know your topic and perfect your presentation in front of real people. Don’t forget to ask for honest feedback to help you refine and improve.

5. Only memorize your introduction, then speak from the heart

It’s totally natural to be nervous when you’re speaking in front of a group, but most people experience the greatest worry at the very beginning of their presentation.

Set yourself up for success by memorizing your introduction. It’ll help you get over the nerves by giving you a solid, confident start. Once you’ve laid a solid foundation for your presentation, speak from the heart and really connect with your audience. That’s what separates the good public speakers from the great ones.

Even if you haven’t mastered public speaking, you can take your skills and knowledge onto any stage and make a great living as a trainer — no matter how qualified you think you are and no matter how skilled you are at public speaking!

You’re so right with your first point. Many people needlessly terrify themselves by thinking the entire speech is about them, when the audience is more concerned with the content. Overcoming this is the first step to a good speech.
