Training and teaching aren’t all glitz and glam. A lot of the time, it’s silly and imperfect. But that’s what makes it so awesome! You see, most people see the finished product and say “Wow, I could never do that.” And guess, what, neither can I!
Let me let you in on a little secret: Even the pros who look perfect and polished in the finished product make mistakes. We screw up. And things may seem all cut up and professional. But in reality, we shoot take after take until we get it right.
Watch the video above to take a behind-the-scenes look into my life as a teacher and speaker.
Being a great teacher has almost nothing to do with perfection — the video is proof of that. But the greatest teachers and trainers I know have learned that really connecting with people has everything to do with authenticity. Read on below to learn more.
What does authenticity really mean?
Authenticity is a word that you hear flying around spiritual communities self-help gatherings and psychology offices all the time. But what does authenticity really mean?
Being your true, authentic self is about presence. It’s about living in the moment with conviction and confidence and staying true to yourself. And, it means that sometimes you’ll mess up and say something stupid (like I did!) and that’s OK!
Whether you stand on a stage or speak on a screen, being authentic is about sharing who you really are. Your audience doesn’t really care about how perfect your PowerPoint presentation is. What hooks them and keeps them coming back is how you relate to them, human to human. This idea is something that I dive deeper into in my free web class, “Teach And Get Rich”. Click here to learn more about it.
Now let’s dive into why authenticity always wins!
3 Ways Authenticity Makes You a Better Trainer or Public Speaker:
1. People gravitate toward authenticity.
People relate to people — not the manufactured version we sometimes try to portray.
Embrace your flaws (we all have them) and talk about your problems. Then, share how you overcame those challenges. That’s your secret sauce!

2. Transparency helps your audience connect with you.
Some say great speakers are honest. I say they’re transparent. Honesty is when you share the truths you feel others should know. Transparency is when people can see for themselves the truths that they need to know.
When you’re transparent, you put yourself in your audience’s shoes and allow your audience to see themselves in you. The more they relate to you, the more they trust you, the more they will want more of what you’re offering!

3. When you care about people’s problems (and provide a solution) you win!
This one is by far the most important part of being an effective teacher: There’s no use in giving a presentation if you aren’t going to HELP people!
Before you open your mouth, ask yourself: Is the information I’m teaching going to be useful in their lives?
Are you going to teach them a new skill, or help them better understand a difficult subject?
If the answer to those questions is “no”… stop what you’re doing right now. Go back and think about how you can approach your topic in a way that will help people in the best and most valuable way possible.
Bottom line: When you give a training or presentation that looks “perfect,” people get uncomfortable. They don’t connect with you and they aren’t sure why. They know you can’t possibly be like this in real life, so they wonder what’s hiding behind the mask of your perfect appearance, perfect words, and perfect smile.
No one cares that you’re not perfect. In fact, most people love it! Because they aren’t perfect either.
Be The REAL You, Despite Your Imperfections
When you’re on stage or in any setting where you’re teaching a group of people, be the REAL you, despite your imperfections or weaknesses.
You don’t have to be perfect to be effective.
The heart of being authentic is being vulnerable. It’s about making sure your outside matches your inside. When you really believe in what you’re teaching, and you focus on helping others, you’ll be unstoppable.
So, are you ready to put it all on the line and show up as your true, authentic self? To be a top speaker or trainer, there are specific strategies you need to follow, techniques you need to use, and methods you need to apply to help you stand out from everyone else.
