If You’re Not Delegating In Your Business, You’re Doing It Wrong!

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Some key highlights from my video above:

You have way too much to do, you’re buried in work, and it seems like there’s no way out from under it all. But there is a way out: delegation.

Yeah, yeah, you know it’s important to do, and you know it will save you time and help others develop new skills. So, why aren’t you doing it?

Why you’re not delegating

There are plenty of reasons why business owners and managers don’t delegate. Some are perfectionists who think it’s easier to do everything themselves, or that their work is better than others’. Some believe that passing on work will make them look bad, while others lack self-confidence and don’t want to be upstaged by other people.

No matter what your reasons are, accepting that you can’t do everything yourself is a critical first step to delegating. And delegating could be what’s standing in the way of your business success.

If you need more guidance with how to come up with a plan of attack, my FREE Business Blueprint can help.

Your business won’t grow if you don’t delegate

As a business owner, you need to learn how to hire employees and pass off tasks and responsibilities. That way, you can free up your time and energy to focus on growing your business AND only be involved in activities that you’re really good at.

Can you make it on your own in business, and be outrageously successful? Heck yeah! Don’t let anybody tell you any different. However, you get so much more done with teams, and the more people getting more done, the more fun it’s going to be. How fun would it be to play volleyball when it’s two of you against five people on the other side? What if you could have as many people on your side as possible if the rules allowed it? Would you do it?

Read on to learn 4 keys to delegating that will ease you in gradually, help take key tasks off your plate, and ultimately free you up to handle the work that matters most.

4 Keys To Effectively Delegate In Your Business

1. Figure Out What You’d Rather Not Do

No one loves to do every task required to run a successful business, and if there are things you find yourself avoiding because you just don’t like doing them, it could be something you could delegate to someone who does.

If you hate running inventory or are terrible with posting on social media, but you’ve been doing it because no one else was available, make those tasks your priorities for delegation.

Start by delegating the tasks you dislike to other people.

2. Choose Who You Delegate To Wisely

Your employees have different strengths. Learn their strengths and weaknesses before handing off tasks. You want to set them up for success, so be sure the work you’re giving them plays to their abilities.

In other words, if someone admits they aren’t good with numbers, don’t give them the monthly invoicing just because they have some free time, or there isn’t anyone else who wants it.

Successful delegation requires trust, so be sure to give the right tasks to the person who’s ready and able to complete the work.

3. Set Clear Expectations

I’m convinced most people want to do a good job, but they may need to know what you consider to be a job well done.

What exactly are you currently doing, from start to finish? And what are your expectations as far as each step of the process?

If you can articulate these, then you can give them something they can reference if they have questions.

4. Hire Based on the Skills You Need

I’ve written a lot about the importance of vetting your team carefully as you go to hire the right people.

If you don’t think that anyone else on your staff is detail-oriented enough to handle the invoicing or bookkeeping, then you’ll need to hire for that skill set.

5. Acknowledge the Person Taking Over

It may sound like a small point, but saying, “Thank you for taking this on” can be an invaluable way to make a team member not only feel appreciated, but also gain respect for the importance of the task.

Acknowledging their contributions and letting them in on the importance of their role is a great way to motivate the person taking over.

Bottom line… If you want to get rich, you will need help.

You will need support. And it comes down to a matter of ENERGY.

A lot of money takes a lot of energy! Will the wealth you want to earn take the energy of one person, 5, or 10, or 50 people?

If you delegate well, you can increase trust and commitment within your team, improve productivity, and make sure the right people are performing the tasks that best suit them.

So don’t be afraid to pass the baton.

It might take some practice to become a great delegator, but if you work at it, you’ll all go further.

Now, it’s your turn! What tasks can you delegate to free you up to focus on what’s important?
