Finding Your Passion in Life and Work

Reading Time: 3 minutes

September 27, 2017 By T. Harv Eker 10 Comments

Before you can work on finding your passion in work, you first have to know your true self. One can’t happen without the other. Focus on discovering your true self before anything else.

The Path to Finding Your Passion and True Self

Many of you know I embrace Buddhist wisdom as part of spiritual knowledge and growth. These kinds of things are choices we make for ourselves hopefully because we find this knowledge relevant and helpful to our lives. Many spiritual philosophies share similar teachings that could be just as true for people from completely different cultures.

That’s the beauty of the Oneness that most of them point toward, whatever different words one wants to use to describe it. We’re all together, all energy; all one thing. We just think we’re separate.

If we’re going to strive for spiritual growth, we have to be willing to put concepts into practice in our everyday lives, in all relationships with all people. You can’t separate your “spiritual life” from your “work life.” They’re both your life!

In the same vein, you can’t separate money and happiness. You can try, but you won’t live a very happy life.

Finding Yourself Comes Before Finding Your Passion in Work

How you’re going to make your money has to reflect your spiritual truth as if you were attending a spiritual ceremony. The physical, material world is simply a printout of what’s going on inside us. To think any different is to fall into the illusion of separation.

So before you find the right job, business, or relationship, you have to find the right you! It’s about matching what you do with who you are. Then you get the right knowledge and the right way for you to become more prosperous and happier.

I realize there are some people who disagree with spiritual concepts, or maybe are just uncomfortable with the topic. That’s okay. We don’t have to go deep or New Agey with this. Finding the Right You is as simple as this: JOY. What are those things you do that give you absolute joy?

Joy is a clue from the heart, not to be confused with pleasure. When you evoke the feeling of joy, you are tapping into your higher nature, your truest self, and the source of your full power, your full creativity, your full wisdom. Then you’re generating passion and finding your passion.

When You’re Passionate, It Shows

Passion creates energy, and energy creates enthusiasm. It’s very contagious. When you are passionate about what you do, it comes through! Will people want what you’ve got? Yes and yes! Mostly because of the energy transfer, that’s it!

The most important thing about your business, whatever vehicle is appropriate for you, is you have to frickin’ believe in it to where you would shout it from the top of the roof to everybody, every minute of every day! If you can’t do that, you don’t believe in what you do enough—and ultimately, you don’t believe in yourself. You’re not being your “Right You”.

When you find something that you really believe in and get it into your subconscious, the obstacles that block you seem more like minor interruptions compared to the passion of operating from your true Self.

Unless you are passionate about what you do, it is very difficult for you to be successful or happy. Right livelihood comes down to finding your passion in work that matches who you are in life.

Tell us your experiences with finding your “Right You.” Have you truly found your “Right You” yet in your life? What was the turning point that made you realize you weren’t being the real you? What was the transformation like? Share your thoughts and comments with our community, your feedback is very valuable!

Harv, I am at a major crossroad in my life and don’t know what to do. I just went through a divorce I didn’t want, there was no financial settlement, and my work as an editor (a job at which I excel but that I find very tedious) has dried up, I’m an American living abroad with my ex, I’m broke and can’t afford to move back to the States (not that I’m thrilled about the current president), and my “passion” in life was always singing. I am a soprano and was in every choir and play possible through school. I had friends who complained about having to practice piano, but I would have given anything to learn to play. I begged my dad for a piano and lessons, but he didn’t want to fork out the money for it. When it came time to choosing a major in college, I really wanted to go for music and theater, but my dad was paying for it, and I knew he wouldn’t go for that. So I decided that journalism would be slightly more practical than English literature, and I fell into editing after I graduated. Although I’m a perfectionist at it, it’s very solitary work and definitely not suited for an extrovert. I’ve heard you talk about the epiphany you had when you were torn between following a spiritual path and making a lot of money, and heard a voice tell you that you could do both. I keep hoping to have such an epiphany. I haven’t been back to the States in nine years and miss my family desperately. My ex and I have a sick cat (we had to have his brother put down earlier this year because he had lymphoma, he didn’t respond well to chemotherapy, and his lymphoma spread), and we’ve just about maxed out our pet insurance on the cat that’s sick now (it seems incomprehensible that we could lose both of them in the same year; we didn’t have children, and they’ve been surrogates). Covering what our pet insurance didn’t cover on his brother broke us financially (my ex is on permanent disability for some serious medical conditions, and I’m a freelancer). I’ve had an inexplicable pressure sore on one of my heels for almost a year, a sore that prevents me from wearing a shoe, and I only get out once a week for a nurse to change the bandages on it (my ex changes them in between visits to the nurse). I feel completely overwhelmed. I have read your books and watched your webinars and find them inspiring, but I never established credit in this country because the plan was always to move back to the States–go figure, and even if I could afford the exorbitant cost of buying a high-SEO domain and hire a website designer, there’s only so much you can say about editing. Regardless, I’m the best editor you could find. If you are working on anything currently and would like to submit an impeccable manuscript that the publisher’s editors couldn’t touch, please contact me. If you have any advice about the litany of problems I’ve listed, please, please advise. I apologize for venting, but I am literally at the end of my rope. Please don’t use my real name if you publish this.

Hi Suzanne. I saw this and thought to comment. Can you get still for a moment? All problems are distortion of the senses and not real in and of themselves. All is mind, be still – stillness of the heart in spirit and faith feel it – and see them “miraculously” dissolve when you no longer believe in them perpetuating them. If that is too difficult you can check out painintheenglish.com and perhaps try finding work there or maybe get ideas to start your own editing website. Love and Light.

Please allow me to condense my comment before you publish it, if you decide to do so. Thanks.

Hi Harv. 🙂 Thank you! I have a question for you. I wrote an ebook that I told you about already called “Finding Heaven on Earth and Discovering the Power of Flow” about a awful accident I was in that plunged me into the present moment for several weeks then I lost it. I remembered the awesomeness of not having “the voice in the head” and instead feeling such calm, clarity, joy and extreme gratitude to be alive. I knew the amazing benefit of being fully in the present moment. I had a hard time accessing this space for very long after I lost it. I read all of Eckart TOlles books, meditated daily and had a yoga practice. I got better at it with intention. I felt a need to tell my story and finally wrote the book and joined toastmasters. I feel like I need to tell it. As I wrote the ebook I asked for guidance for telling it in a way that would be the most helpful and then two things just fell in my lap. One was I was shown Steven Kotler who healed himself by getting into the present moment and completely embodied, or Flow state, and then did all the scientific research. Truly amazing info. He wrote the book The Rise of Superman, and told about this. He said the brain is between alpha and theta brain state in flow. Then I found it is so easy to access alpha by doing a breathing patten for a few minutes and that research shows (The Worry Free Mind by Wade and Kershaw) it is impossible to worry in alpha state!! And I found that if I got into alpha by breathing then I could get into the present moment and hold it for a long time!! In alpha state we are alert, have clarity of mind, impulse control and are connected to intuition and the unconscious. And so many other fantastic things came along with this. My intention is to stay in alpha, actually in alpha and in whole brain state all day, in the present moment. I am still creating strong neural pathways to do this by setting alarms on smartphone to go off 12 times a day. And it has made such a difference!! Days are much better and feels fantastic. Stuff is coming up that I then found Spirit is showing me to clear. I feel I need to share all this. I have a 10 year old and I have been making my schedule flexible so I can go to her stuff at school etc. Right now I am in the process of getting a walking tour business going in Charleston SC as it gives me the schedule I want so I can be available to take my daughter to her activities after school etc. Don’t know how I can make money with showing people how amazing it is to be in the present moment, or flow and grow the strong neural pathways to be there automatically, From what you are saying in this blog, this is my passion, and it would be best to make this my job. Not sure how to. DO you have any ideas?

I can’t find my passion, my purpose on life. I am trapped in a job that is not what I want but I cannot leave it because I have no clue on what else I could do.

    Hi there,
thanks for the very insightful article.Makes a lot of sense.Just one comment I don`t understand.
“you can’t separate money and happiness. You can try, but you won’t live a very happy life.”
Would love it if you were able to elaborate on this.

I used to say If I believe in the product I can sale the product. My problem was staying in one area of creating products. Jewelry, to clothes, to hats, to ties, to parasols to gloves, to candles, to aromatherapy oils….hummm, Universal laws…yes we are one. Learning its ok to be spiritual not religious, thanks soooo much for that one! Learning to tune in with meditation and feeling deprived with out that connection…another high five! Feeling the same way as I did as a child…a loner. This time its better in a lot of ways but wishing to connect with creative happy people….like me! Learning how to put it together, so grateful for the learning….and there are no accidents! Namaste!

Thanks Mr. Harv, for all of your blogs the one about Stop looking for a Job and create a business plan…those word hit me in the eye. But just sharing about my passion, two days ago I realize that something was not right within me, also questioning myself what is my inner world ? and for the past four years since I moved in with my daughter part of my inner joy was missing. I have a passion for gardening and help people, restoring lives through encouraging inspiring and motivating and some how I haven’t really operate in that manner because I started to work on a job and I had my own business as a salon owner. I’m going follow my passion again and create wealth from the land to help thousand and thousand of people.
    Thanks Again.
