Marketing is a dirty word for a lot of business owners. They don’t like doing it, or even thinking about it. They’d rather focus on delivering their product or service. Some would even prefer doing mundane admin work! They figure if they just do a good job, customers will show up, and everything will work out.
And that’s why, within a few years, most new businesses fail.
Yes, your product or service needs to be good. That’s a given.
And yes, you need to keep the operations side of your business running.
But these things do not bring customers. Marketing is what brings customers.
No marketing means no customers. And that means no money. And that just doesn’t work.
The main reason people avoid marketing is because they’ve picked up ideas about it that just aren’t true. I’ve trained hundreds of thousands of students, and over and over, I’ve heard the same wacky ideas about marketing.
Here are the 3 biggest lies about marketing that drag down so many business owners:
- Marketing and sales set you up for rejection and humiliation.
- To make sales, you have to do things you don’t like or enjoy.
- Marketing hurts people.
Now, let’s set the record straight about marketing, so you can get to work making a lot of money in your business. Good or good?
Below you’ll find 3 Truths about marketing to remove those lies from your thinking.
Write these truths down and put them by your desk as a reminder!
Marketing Truth #1: If You’re Worried About Rejection, Embrace Marketing
Okay, so let’s look at the idea that marketing and sales set you up for rejection, embarrassment, or even total humiliation. I’ve got two things to say about this.
1. Marketing Vs. Selling
First of all, let’s get one thing clear– marketing and sales are NOT the same thing. And selling is what most people are actually afraid of when they think about rejection.
Here’s the difference: selling is getting someone to give you money in exchange for your product or service. Marketing is about presenting your products and services in such a way as to make people eager to buy.
Can you guess what you don’t have to do when people are eager to buy from you? SELL!
If you get really good at marketing, you don’t have to do as much selling, but you’ll make more sales. So if anything, people who hate selling should LOVE marketing!
2. It’s Not About You
And here’s another thing about this fear of rejection — a lot of people think that if someone doesn’t buy from you, or says no to your offer, they’re rejecting you as a person.
But the truth is, it’s not about you! They just don’t want your product or service! Or maybe they just don’t want it right now, but they’ll want it later.
This rejection reaction is 100% a mindset problem. If you’re tying your own value as a human being to the purchasing decisions of some other person, that’s absurd!
Believe in what you’re selling, but don’t identify with it. Your value lies inside of you, not in the choices of other people!
Marketing Truth #2: Match Your Marketing With Your Style
Okay, so lie #2 is that to make sales, you have to do things you don’t like or enjoy.
People often hear they have to do marketing or sales a certain way, like cold calling, for instance. They cringe at the idea, but they do it anyway, and lo and behold, it doesn’t work! And, they feel awful and want to give up.
My friend, there are dozens of ways to market your products and services– in fact, we teach over 60 in my ‘Wealthy Marketer’ program.
With this many options, why would you ever pick one you hate!?
Personally, I’d rather gouge my eyes out than do cold-calling, so I don’t. And I’ve sold half a billion dollars in products and services!
I did it by focusing on what I enjoyed and what felt good and avoiding the things I didn’t like. And if you want to get rich in business, you should, too.
Marketing Truth #3: Marketing Helps People (Who Are Interested)
The third lie was that marketing hurts people– that it’s manipulative and annoying.
And unfortunately, this is the case for some marketers. But they’re not my students.
When you focus your marketing on the people who really want and need your product or service, you can feel confident you’re helping them, not bothering or tricking them. And, making money becomes easy!
So how do you do this? With 2-step marketing.
Step 1 is, let people raise their hand to say they’re interested in learning more about your business. Step 2 is, try to convince the people that didn’t raise their hand that they should raise their hand, right? NO!
That’s what a lot of businesses do, and they drive themselves and everyone else crazy.
The correct Step 2 is to share more information with (and get input from) the people who DID raise their hand!
We see this everywhere today. Any time you give a business your email in exchange for a free download, you’re letting them know you’re interested. Then they can follow up with you. There’s a good reason companies do this– it works!
Of course, it would feel great if every single person who comes across your marketing wants what you’re offering, and buys it, and loves it. But that’s not reality.
Reality is, some people will want what you have, and some won’t.
And any effort you put towards trying to convince those who aren’t a good fit is worse than a waste of your time. It’s dragging you down!
So focus on taking care of the people that want what you have. Learn from them, and improve your offerings and your marketing, so you can help them even more and make even more sales the next time!
Now that we’ve cleared the air about the value of marketing and the right approach, the next step is to learn the most important principles to become an expert marketer.

Sorry, I was distracted during the Webinar with a phone call informing me of a funeral I must attend tomorrow and I missed the middle of the Webinar. I saw the very beginning and the end. I would like to reschedule to try again. I always enjoy Harv’s webinars. They always impart some new thoughts for me. I was a Market Research manager, but it is an opportunity to learn something new or even a new twist on something I already know.
