How To Stay Happy During Troubling Times

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Some key highlights from my video above:

You can maintain happiness and make the most out of this crisis. Here’s what I believe.

All you have to do is learn the number 1 secret to happiness, which is to be present and quiet your mind. The present moment is the only moment we truly have because the future is imagined. Fear only exists in the future, and the definition of fear is the anticipation of pain. Once you learn my strategies for maintaining your happiness in the present, being happy in the future follows as a result.

The #1 Secret to Happiness

Learning how to respond during difficult times is something that takes practice, but when you learn how to manage your mindset, nothing that happens around you will be able to control your happiness.

I dive into this in more detail in my free web class, The Shocking Truth About Happiness.

So, how do you find happiness no matter what’s happening? It’s simple: quiet your mind. Just be present. When you live in the present, you can’t be swayed by the fear of “what if.” Fear can only exist when we get too focused on the future.

I can hear you now: “What if my 401K doesn’t rebound”, “What if I get sick,” “What if my business doesn’t survive?”

Guess what – any of those things could happen, but there’s also an equal chance that none of them will. So why let something that hasn’t even happened yet control your happiness? Fear can only exist in the future – but when you focus on the present, there is no fear.

I get it, the “present” may not always be pleasant, but even if what’s happening is not so fun (i.e: being stuck at home for the foreseeable future), I can guarantee you’ll be happier when you focus on all of the good things that are happening right here and right now.

Sure, you may be stuck at home if you are still social distancing, but you have the opportunity to spend more time with your family, focus on learning something new, or just rest and recharge. Why waste energy on a “maybe” when there’s so much joy to be found right here, right now?

2 Steps To Being Happy No Matter What

1. Practice Being Happy

How can we focus on the present not only when things are going really well, but when things suck, too?

The answer: practice being happy. (And, I want to emphasize the word practice here because any powerful skill requires it.)

Anything you practice becomes a habit, and habits become permanent unless we consciously change them. We’re practicing something all the time through our habits, even when we’re not really thinking about it.

If you practice the thought that “I’ll be happy when [fill in the blank] happens,” then guess what? You’re always delaying your happiness until [fill in the blank] happens.

Not because things will never be great, but because you’ve become a master at being unhappy. Unhappiness will be your habit!

This leads me to the next step to being happy no matter what…

2. Prioritize Happiness

You have to prioritize being happy — no matter what is going on in life; whether you win or lose, succeed, or experience temporary setbacks, whether everything is the way you have always dreamed or if you are still on the road to your next major destination.

How will you train your mind to focus on the present moment, and as a result, to find happiness? What things or people in your life right now can you find happiness in? Let us know in the comments.

Now that you hopefully understand why you should prioritize happiness, you might be wondering how to do it. I’ve been prioritizing happiness for a long time, studying and practicing what it really takes to be truly happy. Would you like to know what I’ve discovered?

Well, I’ve got some great news! I’ve developed a set of seven principles that have transformed my life and made me a much happier person. One of them, which we’ve been talking about here, is that you have to prioritize happiness.
