What This Football Coach Said “Struck A Chord” With Me… And How It Will Help You Create Life And Business Success

All leaders have the same problem. This matters to you because to get what you want in life, at some point you’re going to have to lead. That’s what successful people do in some way, shape or form.
The problem is that you have a team, a group, and they all have personalities. They, like us, are all robots. They want to do things their way because it suits them, and they think their way is better.
When you have a team that’s on the same page despite their individual robotics, you have a group primed for success. If not, you get mediocrity or worse.
I have an example that really brought this home for me. I have a place in San Diego, so I’ve grown an affinity for the football Chargers. They got a new coach year before last, Mike McCoy, and ended up doing well in a tough division even though they really actually weren’t that great of a team talent-wise.
At the end of his first season, McCoy was asked, “When you took over, how did you get the team to start performing so well?”
What was so profound for me about his answer was that I heard the exact same thing in basketball on the exact same day. Another first-year coach was talking about his new success. He and the Charger’s coach gave the exact same answer, so I thought, “This must be important.”
The answer was: “I came from a system, and I installed a system that they’re not used to. The reason we’re doing better now is not only that the system works, but everyone’s following the system. A lot of coaches have systems, but the players won’t play the system, so you have a losing team.”
They key is not just to have a system that works. The key is to have the players “buy into the system.”
In other words, successful coaches are great salespeople.
You have to give your team a vision of how change is actually going to be fun and exciting because it’s been proven to work–as long as everyone commits to it.
They get to be part of a process that will turn the tide from mediocrity (and those not-so-joy-joy feelings that go along with knowing you can do and be better) to tangible, noticeable success.
You hear it all the time in sports: nothing squashes minor squabbles and drama amongst a team better than success.
But most importantly, you’ve got to show proof that the system works.
McCoy was a coordinator on the Denver Broncos the year before he joined the Chargers. That year, the Broncos went to the Super Bowl.
It wasn’t hard for him to sell the fact that the Broncos went to the Super Bowl–the one thing every NFL player wants–and the Chargers didn’t.
He didn’t say, “Do you want to play the system?” He said, “Do you want to go to the Super Bowl?” They say, “Yes,” and he says, “Good. This system takes people to the Super Bowl.”
Not a hard sell at that point.
What needs to happen next, though, is to make the system very simple to understand, which makes the buying-in that much easier. Make it very, very easy, and one tiny thing that they do that’s within the system.
Show them the benefits of the system. Have them learn the habit of using the system, even just one tiny part of it.
The basketball coach said he showed his team that in his system, when you’re in the best position you pass the ball off to the right, and that player passes off to the corner, and then the corner player passes back off to the original passer, who now has a clearer path to the basket than before that first pass. Going two more steps moves the opposing player and opens up the lane to a much greater extent.
So that’s what his team practiced 100 times. They became perfect at it. They only drove the ball to the basket after it’s gone to the third corner player and the lane is open.
You’re dealing with habits here. You are the leader. You must lead a process of having people change their habits and buy into the system. You’ve got to show its effectiveness by:
1. Making the system super-easy to buy into (does this not apply to your customers as well?).
2. Making the system super-simple to learn.
3. Repeat Repeat Repeat … practice changing the habit.
This goes for athletics, personal habits, group habits, or your business.
Without a system in place, you’ll never have a self-sustaining business, and without proof of success and practice, your group won’t use an otherwise potentially good system.

I have a business partner + father to my daughter now 24 years. Only runs things his way …. Finally decided to invest in some training – one was your Millionaire Mind Intensive – great information, got your book and CD’s shame is that I am unable to make any changes in my business due to this resistance. Each time I try and take myself out of this I get back to the same place, I have been trying to get out of this but I am on my own and things are really difficult because the finances are effected (and controlled by him but my name is on them …!),, but it is only the way he will do it, keeping information so I would have to ask all the time for prices, etc for the customers. Anyway I could tell you so much of my ‘terror’ that I find myself in at 64 years, debt etc, I am now approaching a lawyer, but for many years I have asked for the accounts and he is not giving them to me so I may see what action to save myself I could make. I am in South Africa; I know this is personal but maybe it will help someone understand if they should find themselves in a similar situation.
Thank you for your article it makes perfect sense to me – though only to highlight my struggle and being trapped
Thank you
Hi Jennifer,
I am from South Africa (Gauteng) as well and can understand your frustration around this. Look me up on Google under Mini Wholesale and get in touch – It is always nice to meet people in the same mind set and helping each other in life. Stay strong on your believe system and as Harv is saying – Keep it simple – Hope to chat soon 🙂 Thank You Harv for sharing and this keeping it simple made my businesses grow and the results are showing. When one makes it difficult, that is when stress kick in and one falls back to be like the 80% of the world population 🙂
Thanks for sharing, I’m sure you’ll find the answer soon enough, it’s too bad sometimes we have to hit ourselves very hard to learn our lesson, I just hope many of us learn from the experience you are sharing
Tanks you Harv I’m in the process.
Hi, Im from Papua New Guinea (just north of australia). So i just graduated from university and decided to try start something for myself. I happen to find a group of friends who are programmers (graduates as well) and wanna try building an IT business. They wanted me to come in and lead the team. So here we are, looking for client projects as a startup going up against big foreign IT companies. Three 6 months later and the guys are giving up. They seem to get turned off everytime we get a negative response from potential clients. Its reached a point where i cant literally keep them together. So i have a question, Harv, How can i keep them together and going despite all the “not so promising” signs we are facing?
Lieber Harv,
Danke vielmals für diesen Artikel!
Christine
Hi Harv, Thanks for sharing wonderful information in this article, I understand that everything should be in place that The perfect system, The Coach(Leader) who coach the system with example and proven success, and the team players who follow the system as it is. Thank you so much…!
I’ve attended your MMI@KL last year 2014. It’s Amazing seminar..but I failed in the progress as planned. I can’t do things which planned cos No follow up mentor /coach to help/advise/remind. Yes, as a human, we can’t do anything by our own. Consistency in learning, add value ourself in some input , knowledge are very important to develop self skill and talent. I believed in working as a team. To have a great team. When I was in boarding school for 6 years, and my experience in leading the students ; boost my inner strength and talent to lead a team. My confident level was drop after something happen to me (really shocked) when at my final year university at the age of 22 yrs old. This uncle (my mum sister husband-who is Indonesia citizen stayed at This country) was trapped me and the whole of my family member was been disturbed by him. He did something which ruin myself. He planned it. He used authority, his black magic to disturb me and the whole family. Can u imagine how a student (which is me on that time) , normal and happy as a student has been trapped and he make a fake report saying that (I brought a knife to the road want to kill people, he saying and make a repo as I’m crazy!).. The whole of my body been kicked and a lot of black scar . It’s happened immediately ..few seconds ..Cos he used black magic ..he blind the authority eyes..just for that day..Do u know how I feel? How my parents especially mum feel? When her daughter has been trapped and this crazy uncle make fake report that I do that such stupid thing? Omg . When my parents want to take action to him (this crazy uncle) becos he make fake repo and trapped me that way,(the situations was really shocked!) he used black magic harm my mum and father who taking care of family. The effect of that until today..family broken. He keep on disturbed us. My parents especially has been disturbed mentally until those black magic overcome their life. Sadly, this uncle (that crazy uncle) still outside alive. He can’t see me especially and my family be rich and happy. How I still survived ? I got helped from one of the well known person who expert in dealing in this kind of stuff to healing . It take years..years.. Last year ,I don’t know how this uncle tracked me cos I noticed something ..sometimes it’s not because I don’t want to believe or trust other who may help in critical time which I really need help to, it’s just because of security and safe. I can’t stop this crazy people do what he want to do unless I get big support from those well known , rich and great authority to help me out from where I am right now and get justice for myself and family especially mum. Just becos of jeolusy (that uncle), spoil my happy family. It was really sad to me. But I won’t easily give up in my dream. I know what was happening, how thing happening, I know what stuck me to achieve what I want to be on my early 20 ..that experienced so much valuable to me in dealing with people. Still people who are innocent and suffered out there , hope and seek for someone , somewhere to lead sincerely to get really really rich and success . It was wonderful when I get to attend T.Harv Eker’s MMI, and now his new life make over coaching is a group of authority which make me believe and rethink to be part of it. Hope there is still a light for me to be great , rich and success as well as meeting new great great community in this world. Hope that I would get back my confident level , to stay alive ..and living in peace .
that’s the best fantastic.
Now i get it.I am a soccer player in the Ugandan premier league and it so happened that the new coach tried to implement the 3~5~2 system and it was a complete disaster because he tried to impose it on us instead of telling us that the system can lead us to victory.my oh my we left the season trophiless
