Why You May Be Sabotaging Yourself From Finding Your True Path In Life
When we talk about right directions, the biggest issue that people have is not being able to make a decision on what direction they think they should take for fear of making the wrong choice. When we are fearful of making a mistake, then it’s got to be the “right” direction.
I want everyone to write down these words: “What is it?”
Everyone wants to know, “What’s the right thing for me?”
That’s a bad question. Why? Because it puts way too much pressure on you.
I don’t blame you for being afraid to make that kind of choice, because what if it’s the wrong one? It’s like a forever question: what if you get stuck with that choice forever?
Go back to that question “What is it? ” and cross out the word “it.” I want you to replace that with the word “next.”
What is next? What’s the next thing you want to try or do?
What just happened is you gave yourself some breathing room. You let yourself off the hook. You took the massive stress out of the question.
What is next could be a day, a month, a year, three years, or whatever.
You’re not necessarily going to find the perfect direction, but as I say in my Life Directions course “The idea is to try on different coats”.
We have this imagination that says, “Here’s what my perfect dream life looks and feels like. If I was just a writer, and I wrote books all day long, or if I was on stage teaching all day long, I would be a happy camper.”
And here’s where we get stuck. We have this image of the perfect situation for us. We’re not in that perfect situation, and we’re not living that perfect lifestyle or direction, but we say, “This will be it.”
Here’s what happens: You do “it,” and pretty soon you’re saying, “This isn’t it. There’s something missing. What is it? Do I need to make a revision to where I’m at now or do I need to change to something completely new? I’m so disappointed that this wasn’t it. I still don’t feel great.”
Now we’ve got a big problem, don’t we?
If your issue is career, then I would ask, “What is next?” In other words, what would you love to try, especially if you weren’t afraid of the money thing?
Whatever the answer to that is, you may think, “I don’t know if I can make a lot of money at that.”
Here’s my contention. I’ll go back to the original teachings and principles that I think I’m fairly well-known for, which is solving people’s’ problems.
If you help people in a way that they need or want to be helped, and it’s in the area that you love to help people in, you’re going to love what you do, and you’re going to make a lot of money, assuming you learn the business elements we teach in our Million Dollar Business Secrets course.
You need to have a little bit of skill, but the most important thing is: are you helping people? Are you really helping them solve their problem?
Also, do you love helping people in that area? Is that something that sings to you? We all love to help, but we all love to help in certain ways more than others.
This is for those people who are having challenges with choosing their direction:
1. A lot of this is about fear. Instead of putting pressure on yourself to choose “correctly,” choose what’s exciting for you to imagine how you would help a lot of people in a way that’s fun for you, and that you’re good at.
2. Get a private coach. Let them help you for at least a few months. Whatever your goal, it’s much harder to accomplish without someone who can mentor you through that process. Learning the skills from someone with proven experience makes a huge difference.
The problem with most people is that they are so busy being fearful of choosing the wrong thing that they lose focus on what’s exciting for them to pursue versus what’s correct.
What’s a path that sounds awesome for you to pursue? Do you believe you’d never make the kind of money you’d like to make pursuing that path? Is that absolutely true?
If so, is there another way you can stay in the field you want but apply your skills and talents in a different way?
Bouncing ideas within the community could be a valuable way to help brainstorm the path that’s true for you. Leave your feedback in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you!

For Your Freedom,

OMG! This article speaks directly at me! I have spent my whole life in FEAR. So fearful of failure, the ‘what if’s’ and more. I’ve been a hairtylist for 35 years and recently have decided to start my own business. I’ve started a MOBILE HAIR business. (AT Home Hair Trends) After taking T Harvs Millionaire business program and the online coaching, I am still second guessing my career choice. How the hell do I make money at doing this. I can’t see the connection to what T Harv is teaching and us little guys with small business ideas that want to make it big.
One thing I know is I really needd some support! I will look for a coach and some marketing help. It’s exhausting living in fear. I ‘m also 53 years old and single. I find my mindset about being at this age and not having what I want is also a huge obstacle that I am fearful of….grrrr….sigh….
Hey Lisa,
I know what you mean but because you continue working at your passion that shows that you have the fight in you! If I can ever be of assistance with your marketing needs please email me at sight2serve@gmail.com. Also you can visit my site at sight2serve.com. Have a great day!
Be still! Embrace all that you are! Mobile hair freaking awesome! When you show up for you,so does life! Wishing you love, light, blessings) it is so!
Hi Lisa,
First of all, congratulations on taking the decision to start your own company, that’s great!
Reg. how to make money, maybe you can do some videos on how to do your hair yourself nicely/festive and so on, and perhaps have different models with different hairtypes that you instruct verbally and explain while they do their hair themselves. Then you could perhaps do their hair afterwards and film it too, so that people can see the difference between what they can do on their own and what you can do for them. Then you are giving something away for free too, and you can put the videos on YouTube and on your website, as marketing?
Anyway, just a thought, good luck with it all.
I have had my hair license for 35 years. I just wanted to encourage you! Starting a mobile service is so valuable to clients, it is a wonderful venture : )
Hey Lisa! Congratulations on stepping out and starting your own business. Mobile hair sounds like an interesting and likely much needed niche. My main question though is for you, personally. If you are feeling held back, is hair really what you want to do, or is it simply what you have always done?
Marketing is just a skill that can easily be mastered once you have the passion for your business.
Best of luck to you!
Great article, my biggest challenge is to find that coach, there are a lot of coaches in Germany, but most of them haven’t made the “big cash” or ever made a real company…
Hey Kion, I’m based in Australia and have used a LifeMakeover coach from Harv’s program and she is based in Vancouver. We just Skype once a week. So you could source one through that program if no luck in your home town and give it a shot.
Hi Vanessa
Do you like your make over coach? Care to share?
Lisa
Hi Keon, attend a Power Days Coaching with Jürgen Höller – this could help. I met some very good coaches there.

This seems to address an issue for me at the moment. I refuse to let it block me from success. I am 21 years old and focused on building my skills and value, to ultimately create a rich life. I appreciate each of T Harv Ekers life lessons, I believe that each one has much relevance to my current situation. I am sure you are very proud, and rightfully so.
Harv has, like he does, a very pragmatic approach to this topic : “stop imagining how your perfect life will be and start walking in a direction that feels right from your heart”
I have struggeled with this for a very long time.
My conclusion is to optimize my current business and then consider new things that feel right to me a that time.
I am willing to recieve very much and feel blessed.
Have an excellent day everyone 🙂
Thanks for the article! I encourage others because I know how it feels to be scared! It’s not good speaking badly about yourself-been there-done that) it just added despair! All the time wasted, the power was within us all along! Be compassionate with yourself guys! Peace and blessings
Im from mozambique – Africa, i want to be rich, im fighting, thank for all the lessons.one day ill be with you
Keep believing and keep strong it will happen to you
Great article! Thank you! This is exactly how I feel about changing career or doing anything besides the job I already have. It make a sense to replace with what’s next , I really feel less pressure and even some kind of excitement about how cool it will be to try out next thing in my life!
I love this msg 😉
Thank you.
Funnily enough, this came to me right at the right time. I don’t know why or how – it just did. I’m looking at making a massive career transition from IT Sales, to law. I’m 40 and I’d be starting all over again, including the years of study ahead of me, but it’s something I’ve wanted to do but always made excuses not to, which is huge regret to me. I don’t want to live with regrets, so I start university again at the end of next month! Finally, I’m getting on with it and actually doing it. I went I to IT Sales to make a quick buck 15 years ago, and I’m still there living pay cheque to pay cheque getting nickel and dimed by customers and brutal treatment from those I work for – and I hate it. I’d rather take a pay cut, at least for a while, and do something I’ve always wanted. It’s time to try on a new coat – and look forward to what’s next! What an awesome way to look at it!! Thanks Harv! That put all of my own fears aside.
Amazing article!
“If you help people in a way that they need or want to be helped, and it’s in the area that you love to help people in, you’re going to love what you do, and you’re going to make a lot of money”
I love this!!!
Thank you T.Harv Eker!
Carlos
Thanks, Harv, for reading my mind. I HAVE been stuck in the fear stage of not knowing whether this is the right step for me to commit myself to fully. But realizing that I can definitely change my course takes the load off my mind. Your words of wisdom are sooo helpful. Thanks!
Thanks Harv, yep the stress was high on and with “What is next…?” gave me immediate peace. I found a nice coach and subscribed to her website for FREE newsletters as I cannot afford her yet. What I also did was asking for support to the Universe… and the answer came that EVERYONE and EVERYTHING is always supporting you. So I have made an appointment tomorrow with our FREE governmental local community support Also started asking people in what way they could support me. With everything they said I asked myself HOW DOES THIS SUPPORT ME. Does it feels good? or not? and I take the next step… by step…. by step. Yep sad as well feeling running in circles but my circle is getting bigger… breaking circle by circle. And have to do that because I feel that ‘going out ther in the big world’ wow there is so much going on I would lose myself if I would not stick to my step by step plan in what is working for me. Do I have a path? no… yet trust and have faith all will work out going along,… Have FAITH Beautiful ALL , wishing YOU ALL THE SUPPORT IN THE WORLD AND THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING ME
Wow I am so happy I read this NOW. I am struggling to keep the mindset of I CREATE MY LIFE, in the midst that I can’t even have a drink with my chldren in town during their holiday. I turned my focus minutes after minutes from I suck, life suck, to nooooo! I am an excellent moneymanager, etc. My challenge is indeed to keep it ‘small’ what is next. I doubt my qualites as a weight loss coach. I doubt if I can do it on my own. Even though I have been working in a sportclub and coaching ladies. But that was in a preset setting. Now I have to designed it by myself and that scares me. Will I succeed, am I tough enough to bring them results, what if they do not loose weight. That would make me a failure.
What sings to me is being able to bring the people to new thoughts about dieting, health, wealth, about life, love and happines, about themselves. I want to use my own life experience to help them. I feel a lot better in thinking about the next. I will call all my former clients and asked them what it is they want, and what they find missing in the market. Is this a good Idea?
Hi Shirley. Keep on working on it. On your mind and on your business. My husband laughs when he hears me do my declarations. Some of them feel so untrue. At first I started to beat my self up and avoided saying them. But one day I decided to talk back to my mind and I basically created affirmations for the objections that came up and then I started getting more comfortable, I feel stronger, and good things started happening for me. I change the tone of my voice when declaring… like an actor trying on different ways of delivering a line. Sometimes I even sing them. All of this makes the declarations more alive for me. It really is making a difference already. I’m pretty surprised and delighted. I wish you the best.
Great article. Especially the part about helping people. It took me a while to realize that the way my company makes money is by helping people. The more we help the more we make. Simple concept but so powerful!
Thank you Harv, it was simply the perfect lesson I needed for the day. I am at the cross roads of my life, and realize that I have wasted too much of my precious life trying to make the most careful decision. On many occasions I have even failed to make the decision itself from the fear of “others” more than my own.
I believe its time to rephrase our life’s questions and start answering them from my own standpoint and without fear of society or failure.
Thank you once again Harv for this amazing insight.
“What’s next?” Brilliant. Thanks for that pressure buster statement.
I think this is amazing. It is exactly the question I ask myself, what is it that I want to do as I feel I am not giving my best at my career. It is such a awesome way to think and rephrase it to “What is next?” Saying it excites me already. Thank You, Harv.
This is my short story:p :
I started my own Landscaping company when I was 16. Fighting then, still, probably until I make it with my dad about how I like Entrepreneurship sales and Marketing. He believes in Linèar income. A trade worker… That’s fine. . . I finished my Electrical Engineering with merits as one of the students of the year among thousands, No recognition for it from him really… So I said well then ( after reading at least 12 books growing myself and attending the MMI) I quit my JOB a week later and now I am fully investing my time in the new challenge of Network Marketing. Turns out I am good at sales, But Damn do I still have a lot to learn. The best advice I got from MMI was if someone is making more money than you, they know something you have not learnt yet.
Now TRUST me the first month crossing over from JOB, Leaving Everything as is and starting Marketing, my biggest challenge was, is and probably will be family. I tried everything to get my parents to agree to an MMI in November. It’s one of my dreams to get them there because I know it will change everything. They DO NOT want to listen to me or anyone mentioning anything about making money.
Well I just Got my Pennies back. Invested 100$ and got 200$ back. BTW in South Africa THAT IS HUGE. Now I have to make 20 000$ this month as it will bring me back 40 000$( Investing in a really really good business) ( My Secret 🙂 )
Well I guess all I can advice anyone who felt any scene of feelings toward this story is… : You see that dream, the one you see like all the rich people who made it. Keep that in your mind, stay humble to gaining knowledge and remember the foundation will be the toughest part of your ENTIRE life… I love public speaking and Would like speaking at these events and telling my full story. Coaching as I Will share that on stage soon. But till then… I will keep my head down, Studying, learning and growing.
Mister Harv. And Douge You changed my life. I wish I could spend a week just seeing what you guys do on a daily basis. Maybe make some friends. BTW I am 21 years old.
This week BTW was the toughest one mentally of my entire life. Mostly because I am growing the belief in myself ( Mental , Spiritual and Emotional) . MY Spiritual one is solid. Can’t believe how close I am to God these days. We chat regularly. Mentally… Books, more books and seminars. ( Standards of life has a huge effect) and Emotionally.,.. Now that one got me working really REALLY really really hard.. Like in Tears dropping thinking of it hard getting past my non support group. WOW… Just guys and girls.
Do not stop.
Do not give up.
I can start smelling the fresh air of the high peaks.I can see the curve of the mountain as I am reaching the top. And These feet, hands and especially this mind is so confused why I want to reprogram it , but I know I am in control and not the mind.
What is your feedback on this ? I would LOVE to know
Helping others is the key!
As a foreign language teacher it seems obvious I’m helping people, but well, that was not always true I must say.
Most of my students struggled to a point they even gave up before having learnt much. That was driving me mad, so I worked and worked for more than two years on a new way of doing things, making things easier.
I won’t say my students can learn Spanish perfectly without effort because is not true. However; I managed to develop a system which helps them learn faster and in a more funny way than before, so I can make someone speak fluent Spanish with a certain level of decency in three weeks, and they actually enjoy it! It’s this course https://wp.me/P4FNY9-f which I’m so proud of.
It also helps me doing much better economically, so I’m proved of Harv’s teaching. Never been to any seminar of his, but read his book like three or four times and I’ve done most of his actions, and I can say it works, and it could even work better if I were a better student lol
This sounds awesome Harv! Luckily I have lots of different things that I want to try out and do and I love how this post isn’t limiting ourselves. It’s great to know we don’t have to do one thing for the rest of our lives.
“If you want to become a billionare, solve a problem of a billion people!” Yes, I want to become one and I will make it. How will I help other people? I will reinvent the industry, change the rules of the game and not only develop a financial driven entreprise rather than an impact organization that uses environmental friendly policies, creates meaningful job opportunities and provide children hope and possibilities to become world-class hospitality professionals. Whatever happens, people will always eat, travel and seek for entertainment. This is what hospitality is about. Helping people to have great time with their loved ones, previous moments and unforgettable memories are far more valueble than any products. This is my goal to give people quality time with their families, friends and business partners. My ultimate goal is to become a global hotel tycoon. Yes, it is time to make it happen. My mentors are still out there and waiting for them to cross my path. For the billion people in need waiting for me to make things a reality!
Thanks Harv, this is gold!
It worked on my life ..thanks to you
“What is Next?”. Oh man, so simple yet so effective. I had an epiphany as soon as I read that. Awesome. Thanks Harv.
harv we must pursue the mission relished giving everything you have for improving the lives of people . And recently I have assimilated this conceto cells and life is responding to me in terms of what you do . Thanks Harv for this lesson a big hug
This is nothing but only the truth. Thanks Harv
Sometimes one hears a message and it fits right in with the day, with the moment, with the decisions at hand, and with the undeniable concepts of forward motion.
I’ve followed you for several years, your teachings always an asset to my life, but sometimes your message resounds louder than others. Such is the case today.
I am a private coach but often take focus away from my own growth.
So thank you for giving me the prod and principles I need to keep being my best; both personally and professionally.
this lesson is so helpful to me I had to come back and reread it. How many people are there that I can’t help because I don’t believe in myself.
I love this. Don’t look at every decision as “this is it”… Look at them as being the next step. It’s not do or die… It’s ‘try’.
You will learn from every experience. If it works out, then great! If a certain situation doesn’t, then cut the cord, bring with you the knowledge and experience you’ve gained, and press forward until you find your niche.
I’ve made a few career choices in my life that didn’t work out and I always saw them as big mistakes – – that I ruined my life because I made the wrong choice. That’s just not true.
I tried something, it didn’t work out, and now I know that’s not what I want. However, I’m very thankful for the skills and knowledge I picked up from the experiences. I no longer look at those decisions as an anchor holding my life down.
It’s a great feeling.
Hi,
I just read this wonderful article. I have just begun my ‘what is next’ chapter of my life. I am passionate about personal development. I wanted to put great websites, blogs, quotes together on one website for like minded positive pro active people to enjoy. This has come true with the launch of http://www.YourPeakState.com
I know that this is the start of a wonderful adventure as I watch the website, myself and the wonderful visitors to the site develop and grow.
Keep up the amazing work Harv.
Damien
I know I love the telephone and micro phone a lot and all I wanted to do was be call centre operator while also having my business though. Just recently I got a job as a telemarketer and all of a sudden I became afraid if I could actually do it when I got to find out it’s salary is on commission base. It got me really scared like it wasn’t what I always loved to do. After reading this I will just go for it and clear every feeling of fear. Thanks Harv.

I’ve never looked at it this way, and it makes perfect sense! Dive into the things you like and figure out if you love it… then go with your soul if it says that’s your passion. Capitalize on the flames that are already sparked within you. How beautiful. Thank you!
