Practicing Happiness
Practice makes perfect, right? Wrong!
First of all, nothing’s ever perfect. I’d even say you don’t really want anything to be “perfect.” Why not? Well, once you’ve reached it, where else is there to go but backwards or, even worse, nowhere?
With the Winter Olympic Games starting this evening (in Vancouver, no doubt!), I started to think about the art of practice and perfection. Watching the athletes get ready to compete, I am in awe of their strength, dedication and focus. There is no doubt these athletes are striving for pure perfection.
But I believe that the point of practice isn’t perfection. We want to strive for perfection, yes, but that’s only going to work if you understand that it’s not just about the destination but the journey as well. That’s why it helps to look at process when it comes to those outcomes we’re reaching for. Because what would be the point of getting to where you always wanted to be if you’re beat up and worn out by the time you get there? Where’s the happiness in that?
Happiness is a process as much as an outcome. I mean, don’t get me wrong. A hard-earned victory is awesome. But think about it; should happiness in life be restricted to success in finances, or business, or career, or the attainment of goals?
We have all been there at some point in our lives, saying something like, “If only I had [fill in the blank], I’d be so much happier.” Hey, sometimes we may even get whatever it is we think will make us happy, but what usually ends up happening? We’re psyched for a little while—if at all—and then we find out it wasn’t really enough to make us as happy as we thought it would. There’s always more.
You can work your butt off to get to where you want to be by practicing your delivery, your backhand swing, your investment strategies—you can practice anything until you get it down, but that doesn’t mean things are always going to turn out perfectly. Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice becomes habit, and habits become permanent unless we consciously change them. We’re practicing something all the time through our habits, even when we’re not really thinking about it. If you practice the thought that “I’ll be happy when [fill in the blank] happens,” then guess what? You’re always delaying your happiness until [fill in the bank] happens. Not because things will never be great, but because you’ve become a master at being unhappy. Unhappiness will be your habit!
You have to practice being happy no matter what is going on in life; whether you win or lose, succeed or experience temporary setbacks, whether everything is the way you have always dreamed or if you are still on the road to your next major destination.
Practice whatever you want to be in the future now. If you want to be more patient and less reactionary, then practice patience now. If you want to be a manager of your own personal wealth, start managing your finances now, no matter how much money you earn. If you want to be successful, then practice being successful now. Start small. Engage in things that you’re already good at and challenge yourself to be better, even if it’s just in small increments.
The key is to enjoy the process, enjoy the journey. We can have moments of perfection, times where we wouldn’t want a single thing to change, but it’s unfair and unrealistic to ask that of life all the time. But it’s totally within our control to practice being whatever we want to be right now!
So now it’s your turn: What are you going to practice right now? What’s that one thing you want to achieve and are willing to enjoy the process while making it a habit? I want to hear from you.

I want to achieve aggression in gaining employment and successfully acquiring enough clientel for networking and/or marketing my own business so that when retirement comes I will have a plan B.
I love it! Thanks! I will share your blog link with my Online Health Mentoring group as our motto has been “One step at a time” and “The Joy is in the Journey”. Sage advice- Thank YOU!!!
my dedication, journey and focus in life is to love each moment with family, friends and meet new folks everywhere i go. My life is still in the begining of realizations i didn't know i could do and enjoy yesterday. Some days are setbacks but those are the learning days, and most days are leaps and bounds forward to new strengths and possibilities i am looking forward to do and see with someone new!
A few years back there was a “Rose is Rose” strip by Pat Brady. In the first frame, Pasquale (little boy) is racing around being very happy. In the second frame, Rose (Pasquale's mom) asks Pasquale what he is so happy about. In the third frame, Pasquale is running out of the picture saying, “I'll go find something!” In the last frame, Rose asks herself, “All these years I've had that backwards?”

Helpful post – brightens my thinking about problems and mindset, money and success.
Oopps, my previous comment was for the previous post! 🙂
Helpful post. 🙂 tends to make letting go of a self-defeating mindset (that's blocking progress and happiness) much easier.
I want to be the best blues-rock harmonica player in Colorado. Man, I have long way to go. I should have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the process.
I'm practicing joy, happiness in each moment. What I am willing to enjoy the process of achieving is greater consistency in my daily practice of a Grand and Imperfectly Perfect Life.
It seems to me you are talking about 2 perspectives on perfection: the level of ability or quality of product that comes from practice, and the relationship between perfect & happy.
I'd like to throw in another. For about 5 years I visualized my dream car – all $54,000 of it. I put out to the Universe the wish to have such a car at a price that allowed me to feel that I was being a good steward of my money and not over-emphasizing the importance of a vehicle in relation to other things I spend money on. I liked the place I got to in this regard – open to a luxury vehicle in my life, and open to the possibility that it would come in a way that supported my financial value system.
Six months ago, I got this car. For $28,000. With only 30,000 km on it (is that 20,000 miles?) The thing is, everything about this experience is perfect. I love the way I feel when I drive it. I am ecstatic with the deal. The fact that someone may have seen the sticky lock on the tailgate as less than perfection does not phase me. The lock was fixed, and the service and friendliness shown during that experience only makes the whole thing as perfect as perfect can be.
My point? I think perfect is in how you define it. Perfect is not flawless or problem free. Perfect is meeting the goals/hopes/ criteria that you have in mind.
And, in that way, I have a lot of perfect in my life. Including my Valentine of almost 9 years …. Can you imagine my bliss when I combine driving the car with a date with my sweetie? Perfect really is possible. 😉

a few years ago, i always tried to think that i can change my working environment. It was because there were a lot of people problems. Having tried some times, i was totally told that it was impossible to change the other. So I started to change my thinking and tried to enhacing myself first. Through focusing on how to improve myself, i became more happy than before.
Interesting comments Harv. I used to think that “perfect practice makes perfect”. But you are right no one can be exactly top notch perfect. If we were then it is true there would be no where to go.
Since 1972 I have lived by my own motto:enjoy life. This piece fits the happy place in which I live. An example is the fine wood working I have done. I tell the person it won't be perfect, often the reaction to a project is they think it's better than I do. I realy have a great time during building. Happy is a choice. Make it yours every day.
Thank you very much! We should be happy and thankful on every breath we take!
I think, practicing happiness is living in the now… in the present moment so that we enjoy what we do and how we do things. We consciously enjoy the process and the journey…whether we win or lose.
herv,
i am practicing and enjoying moment to moment happiness now, i enjoying my journey towards my destination and goal,
i am accepting the life as it is, i love taking actions and than eating the fruit, i am not bothered what i will get ,but i practice joy, forgiveness, love, relationship, making difference in other's lives, being a model to my children and society,
thank u for that wonderful article, live the future now, don't wait and procratinate happiness
Dear Harv. Thanks very much for reminding me of this. We get so caught up in the frenzy of reaching goals, making all the right decisions, getting trapped in the ego and trying to be perfect all the time.
As Chuck Spezzano says, “You can just be happy for no good reason!”
And that is my new goal. have a great weekend.
Thank you so much Harv, U,ve ben such a motivation to me. I'll practise patience starting from now,its something i've always wanted so i guess now is the time to start it.
Thanks a lot!
I believe in freedom..I really relish it..Right now I am free in many ways and want to make a lot of money which will give me even more freedom in terms of doing whatever I like whenever I like..i.e travel to wherever my fancy takes
I love freedom and having a lot money gives you a kind of freedom esp in terms of travelling and doing things you like without worrying about budget etc.
I am currently practicing courage ~ courage to break free from the fears that have kept me trapped from reaching my goals. And I am also practicing self-love ~ accepting myself for just the way I am knowing that each day I just become a even better and grander version of myself.
i have a daily routine work out in order to achieve my financial goal. i have a daily routine to burn 5 kgs 3 months ago. i stick to the routine and work at it daily. now i have successfully burnt that 5kg. thus i know that when i work out the routine to financial success by merely stick to it work at it daily, it is just a matter of time, the result would follow! true or true? of course, i m going to enjoy the journey towards my goal….i have change my habit too when i boutht a planner that cost me RM 588 ie mega expensive. but i want to create new habit thus i bought it anyway…result? i am very focus and efficient and effective now! worth to invest it every single cent…:-) AHO…
i have been practicing getting up one hour earlier and using this hour to work on my personal development.
That is so true and a great prompt for me to get practicing the important things i.e. happiness, peace etc.
I liked that article about being happy, as a current state of mind, instead of practicing unhappiness, because we are not achieving something yet!
Thanks!
I am going to be a millionaire in 2016 then I will help people attempting to have a successful life and I will be more happy with this action. Reading your comment ” Practicing Happiness ” I committed to be happy and more happy because I can help people right now. After this I will not wait until 2016!
Thank you Harv for your Golden comment.
“Practice doesn’t make perfect.” I agree!
Thank you, Mr. Harv.

I like the idea of practicing how to be happy to become HAPPY! I remember this story with the line that says, “Good news, bad news, who knows.” Whatever the outcome may be…it pays off to be happy.
Makes total sense! People delay their happiness constantly and it when happiness is contingent on accomplishment it becomes a do or die situation, not like it shouldn't be anyways, but happiness shouldn't depend on things that can fail or can change.
Awesome post. I completely agree – happiness should not be affected by the outcome as much as inspired by the journey. Too often, we're caught up with results. You've just reminded us to stop and smell the roses.
Thanks,
Jonathan Flaks
thanks harv, right on…. keeping a balance is wise and fruitious, so too staying in the moment…. i feel it also is easier to do these things if one is doing what they love… so i feel CRUSHING it (ie following your passions) is a very wise process….
its taken me years to get real on what i really love and what i should do, and what i could do to survive…. but at last i have reached a clarity, and thankfully all the steps to this point have been valuable. keeping my balance gets easier the more i practice it…
i'm looking forward very much to helping others on their path 2 a SOULjuicy life they truly dig…
and big thanks 2 u 4 your inspiration n wisdom
LOL! That is a good one! And I love how relevant your blogs always are to my situation, judging by the majority of the comments I am not alone! I am practicing not getting phased when things don't go my way. No more temper tantrums, but snap and shift and life is good! Practised that just now…wanted to make a healthy rye bread in my machine, but was rushing and forgot the yeast…doh! Saw the sad little ball of dough in the pan and pouted for a short while, but not nearly as long as I would have prior to my journey to a happier me! Thankfully my husband is really good at cheering me up, and I am also practising being more receptive to his light-heartedness instead of sticking to the former “I am sulking now and you cannot help me”-attitude!
Wishing everyone in Harv's extended family many small victories and the continuous habit of recognizing success everywhere!
Excellent post, thanks for breaking our ignorance of importance of enjoying the journey by chasing the destination.
Right now, I'm going to practice writing in my success journal so that I continue to focus on the successes that I have each day and celebrate them regularly. By doing that I know that I will continually be happy all along my journey. The one thing I want to achieve more than anything is becoming an Empowering Trainer and presenter who has the ability to transform the lives of everyone I come into contact with. I know that I will enjoy every setp of the journey getting there because it allows me to live into my vision and fulfill my mission in life. There is no greater happiness than knowing that you are consistently improving yourself so that you help the lives of all those around you! Thanks for the Outstanding post Harv!
I am practising changing my mindset and I am aiming at changing my life so that I can achieve my goals of setting up a home business, retiring from shift work, creating financial freedom. I am enjoying the process of learning and applying my new life lessons.
