New Rules: How To Love What You Do
In the past the type of work we as humans did was based more on necessity than choice. You’re a farmer, or metal-smith, scholar, soldier, weaver—you did what you had to do, and circumstances were largely out of your control.
There have also always been people who dreamed of being more than their environment, but breaking out of the path many were born into certainly had to be more of an exception than what is possible today.
Things have changed. The internet, just as one example, is one of the greatest equalizers of opportunity ever! Anybody with a great idea, the skills and the resources can capitalize on a worldwide audience. Hopefully you’ve realized that but you know what? Out of habit many people still don’t.
As a society we haven’t figured out that the necessity of “doing what we have to do” isn’t as ironclad as many would be led to believe; that we have way more options today and way more opportunity then we can even handle. Yes or yes?
The fact is, though, most people do not love what they do for a living. They suffer through it. They do it because they “have” to do it, because they should do it, or because they’re skilled at it. I especially love that one.
“But do you like what you do?”
“I hate it but I’m good at it!”
Are you supposed to love work? Yes!
You know how we can make everyone successful? We’ll all just do one thing. We’ll all be internet marketers. Everyone will get rich, how about that? NO! It’s boring! Maybe not for you, but maybe for someone else who needs, wants and loves to personally interact with as many people as possible. The challenge for them is to find a way to get rich incorporating that into what they do or whatever their passion is.
So it’s imperative to do what we love to do, what we truly enjoy. Joy is a clue from the heart, different from pleasure. When you invoke the feeling of joy you’re tapping into your higher nature, your truer self, and the source of your full power, your full creativity, your full wisdom.
Passion creates energy. Energy creates enthusiasm. When you are passionate about what you do does that come through? Will people want what you’ve got? Have you ever bought anything or wanted to buy something from someone just because you liked that person, versus a person that’s got a really good product, but who shows none or—even worse—false enthusiasm? You don’t want to buy like that. It makes a huge difference for people.
Human energy, at its purest form, is love. And that energy transfers just like any other energy. When you’re passionate about something, you don’t have to sell it. You’re simply educating others on something you really believe in, and their lack of enthusiasm doesn’t temper yours, but rather the other way around. If you don’t love what you do, then what the hell are you doing?!
Now it’s your turn! What do you think? What are the barriers that keep people from realizing that there doesn’t have to be a discrepancy between becoming rich and becoming joyful in what you do? We want to hear from you!!

Awesome, as we grow up and get a job we get so caught up in the work, keeping up with everyone and everything we forget what we love, we forget our dreams. We don't even remember what we were passionate about. Currently fear seems to be a large obstacle in many people's lives. I like song..Don't worry, Be Happy!
I love the Internet. It gives so many people the opportunity to to start a business with little to no money. It also makes it obvious the people that just talk about starting a business but never take action because it takes away their excuses.

How can I help?
Timely post, Harv. I'm developing a repatterning series on the hidden causes of why people feel stuck doing work they don't enjoy. Yes, a lot of it has to do with family and societal conditioning. But there's also a collective barrier that we have to transform. You can see it in people's money archetypes: Slave, Victim, Martyr, Money Monk, Prostitute, Saboteur, etc.
These are part of our collective experience and you're right, it's time to create some new rules about work, money, enjoyment and what's possible.
I'll be talking about this in a Free Teleseminar on Oct. 14th at:

I believe the ONLY reason is the old software we run in our brains. And as an MMI & GBI graduate I admit that even now my old blueprint disables me from running my VAKS every single day…
Loving what you do is another habit. However, there are two conflicting dominant habits in most people's minds:
1) making/earning money is associated as something you have to do to make ends meet, to pay the bills
2) by doing what you love, you'll never make money (the broke artist example)
Harv, everyone seems to be talking about passions these days. I lost this feeling quite some time ago. Specially when it is in reference to work but also for other things. For some reason things don't matter to me anymore. The only thing that really does is someone I love but he tells me not to call and I seem a burden to everyone because I have lost the grip on my life and the ability to take care of myself and this has to change. But right now I don't even know where I belong.
Tanja, things get tough at times and can bring us down. It is important to remember that your happiness is what is important. It is important that this joy and fulfillment come from inside you; not from others. There are so many other fish in the sea, start working on finding some things that make you happy. A hot bath, a pet, a walk, call a girlfriend…find something that will do it for you. You are where you are right now to learn SOME kind of lesson. Take some deep breaths, find something to make yourself happy and then take the next step. Good Luck!
I always feel excited about my work and I make sure my clients feel the WOW after the therapy. I am grateful for what I have been doing and I have this feeling for over 18 years.
As people said, If you love your work, you won't be working any more!
Totally agree! I m living doing what I love now!
Before I got angry at everyone, but the problem was myself forcing myself to work on something I didnt like.
Follow you instincts!
thANX harv!
So how does a person who loves physical contact come to terms with internet marketing and incorporate it but they hate hit and love the person to person contact. Can they still get rich or do they need to do both, how can u program yourself to do both?
Hi! I was such a person in the past… 🙂 but now I've just ventured into internet marketing.
I believe internet marketing offers flexibility. One could always do internet marketing targeted at local (which means it need not be global all the time), bring in new customers and then eventually have the person to person contact.
I have always believed that it's important to enjoy whatever I do and I've always been 100% committed and enthusiastic about everything I do – from cleaning trains to teaching! People say I'm passionate by nature. The issue was that I was always working for other people's successes, leaving me tight financially. Having re-programmed my files, I have started my own projects – the irony is, I can't seem to get passionate about anything I start! Help!
Tanja, life is tough and sometimes we are handed setbacks after setbacks, but you also need to understand that life is also amazingly beautiful if you give it a chance…Learn to know yourself well. Love everything about yourself, your imperfections, your body, etc….
Enjoy your moments of solitude, enjoy your own company, talk to yourself with love and compassion. Just remember you dont need anybody to make you happy. Happiness has to come from within…View this situation, perhaps as way of life telling you that there is better future for you ahead…..
My problem is I don't know what I am passionate about! I like sport or playing sport but to turn that interest into a career that pays the bills is not realistic so I stick to what I know even if I don't particularly enjoy it. I am good at it. I do wish though I new what I was really pasionate about!
Harv,
You're stealing my heart with your wisdom. The truth is, your existence is transforming the way the coming generations will live through us. We are all fortunate to have associated with you.
How to help others with your insights!! There are so many of them who need your help. . . . . Did you hear my heart?
You are doing a great job.
Thanks.
Shiva.
Thanks Harv
For those of us reading your material from the developing economies where poverty is so rampant, it is a great challenge to realize that we really do not have an excuse why this state of affairs should not change yet the internet is accessible and available to anyone who can take up the challenge and become creative. I always 'enjoy' and look forward very week to hear and gain wisdom from you. My life is getting transformed and I believe soon I share some of the steps I have taken to improve life.

Harv,
That is just the inspiration we all need. Thanks for lighting the way for us. It's truly amazing me that you took it upon yourself to provide such a amazing ride for all of us to go though. And that it your life, you live and breath your truest path. Forever gateful to have crossed paths…

Thanks for this post Harv!
I believe I've been so adamant about living my dream life and doing exactly what I want to do because I've watched everyone around me “suffer through” their work. Especially my mom–whose still suffering by the way. Life is too short and I resolved NOT to be miserable going crazy, sitting in a cubicle for most of my life. I'm happy to say that I put my passions first!
Harv,
I am looking forward to meeting you this weekend in San Diego.
Thank you!

I'm passionate about writing and making movies – oh yes…. and making money!!!!
“What are the barriers that keep people from realizing that there doesn’t have to be a discrepancy between becoming rich and becoming joyful in what you do?” Society teaches people to work, work, work – save for retirement and then to have “joy.” Joy in Corporate America is often seen as a person that is not serious about their career or having too much fun. Joy is important to prolonged health and happiness. Great post!
I agree with that whole heartly its the passion and love for what you do that gives off the energy to the other person. but the biggest key is having the right mindset. thanks (T. Harv
HARV!!! COME TO DUBAI!!!!
Hi Harv! I like the post! I think what you said about habits being so intrenched in our psyche that we still think that drudgery is the way to go. I think a big barrier to people also is like a sort of drug addiction to their paycheck. People get a hit at the end of the month and they can survive for a month. Only the courageous can pull themselves back to see other options for themselves and try to take them rather than hang around, half-dead, for their next hit.
I just wrote similar to this on my blog! The 9 to 5 Shits (https://chetzyusof.com/blog/the-9-to-5-shits/)
Sometimes it's a wonder why people rather go through a lot of stuff they hate just because they “have” to or they should.
They're still many people (I'm not sure if it's only in my country) that don't believe in the Internet. Some thought it's a scam when we mentioned that many people already made millions on the Internet.
Like you said, I think it's already a HABIT. The habit is go to work, hate it, go back and complain abt it with the spouse, friends, parents, children. Then go through the same thing tomorrow. It's a cycle.

Well I think that sometimes people don't belive in themself enough to take the first step.
Yes of course you are supposed to love work. It is what we spend the largest amount of time on. I am in this exact dilemma. I no longer love my work. I am currently working on writing out what I love to do. I am currently making a list that starts out each sentence: I love to….Not putting a job description on it just writing out the things I love to do. My battle is my hard wiring. I need to “know” what it is going to look like. I have a hard time letting go of the control of knowing and letting the universe deliver. I'm working through it though.
Passion does produce energy. I love what I do and the only time it is not joyful is when I lose balance. I am in charge of that, so it is up to me to shift gears if necessary.
I love my work ^__^ and I love your book 😉
I remember part of the lyrics of “unstoppable” by Rascal Flatts…
They're not the real words from the song, I just kind of relate the lyrics with success:
We should do what we do with love and we will be successful because love itself is unstoppable.
