Passion: the Fast Lane to Success
Last week we took a look at loving what you do for a living as a means to getting rich. Unless you’re passionate about what you do, it is very difficult for you to be successful or happy.
When you are not thrilled with your work, what are you doing unconsciously? Looking for a way out, yes or no? You’re always thinking “If there was something else …” You’re constantly searching.
Imagine driving on a highway. You’re looking for your exit. What lane would you drive in? The slow lane, because you don’t want to miss the exit. But if you weren’t looking for an exit you’d be flying down the fast lane. Unconsciously, you wouldn’t even know you’re doing it until you see a cop or traffic jam or something. But when you’re in that mode of looking for a way out, you never fully commit. You never get any momentum.
When you’re engaged in what you love to do, it’s like driving in the fast lane. Time flies by and more roads open up to you, alternate routes you may not have even known existed.
So why don’t we do what we love? You’d think it’d be natural, right? Natural talents are gifts from the universe, gifts from spirit, gifts from whatever you want to call your creator. You can refine your talent but it’s something that makes people say, “You’re a natural at that!”
The reason a lot of people don’t find or create work that they love is fear, of course. Fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of change, fear of rejection, fear of looking foolish, fear of disapproval. It’s a story you make up about what might happen or what could be in the future.
In conjunction with fear is obligation. Obligation to memories of the past, obligation to other people, obligation to the freaking mortgage! If your mortgage is hampering your life, which one do you want to release? You’d think the logical answer is the mortgage, but guess which one most people release? They release their lives. Isn’t that wicked?
Whatever obligation it is, it’s nothing more than a fear that ‘If I don’t do this, something bad will happen to me.’ Obligation is a ‘should’. It’s a ‘have to’. It’s an opinion, though, and every one of those obligations is made up. You made it up. It’s not true that you have to or that you should. It’s your opinion based on some other stuff, interpretations that you made about who you are, who others are to you, what’s important, what’s not.
Forget the obligations. If they are not supporting you, give up the ‘shoulds’. Don’t wait! Life is too short to work at something you really don’t love and have a passion for. When you do, you will promote it like crazy. That’s how you’ll know. Before you know it, you’re flying down the fast lane. Do what you love and the money will come. You have to trust yourself.
Now we want to hear from you! What are some ways that you’ve found to balance responsibility to others—like taking care of the family, for example—with responsibility to your creative side? What are some resources that we all have that people may not think about that could help them get over the hump of “shoulds” and “have to’s”?

It's interesting that so many people who seem to teach about wealth will sometimes discount the importance of passion by saying that you will become passionate when you start doing well and making money. This is the most insightful essay I've read (and I've read a lot of them) about how and why working your passion will make you rich. Thank you again, Harv. This post will really affect my choices in the future.
Thanks Mr T. Harv Eker, you make my day.
Yes sir, been 1 year I'm doing what i love,….but money still come in slow.
i have no idea whats goes wrong ….
you hit the nail on the head for me. I've 'played around” with a business for years because of the “shoulds” and the “what-ifs”. The mmost amazing fact is that I was beginning to realize how passionate I really am about what I do after reading another of your posts, so this one drove the nail in! Now how do I get my husband to do the same for himself? (rhetorical question)
Harv,
I always ask people if they enjoy what they do for a living.
99% of the time the answer is a big no! The people that do enjoy their career are excited and energized by just talking about it. One important thing to remember is that every career or profession will require doing some things you might not enjoy doing. As long as the periods of good stuff outweighs the not so fun tasks, you will injoy what you do!
Best wishes,
Darin
Yes, it's hard for folks to do what they are passionate about when they are tied up with a job they don't like because of the mortgage and other obligations. However, what most of these people forget is that they still have their off time. These people should watch less American Idol and spend more of their free time pursuing what they are passionate about. Then perhaps gradually, these activities will turn into something that can retire the day job.
Ethan,
It's fantastic that you are doing something you love to do!
As far as money coming in slow, do you have a solid business plan? marketing plan? Do you take advantage of using social media? There are tons of resources out there that can help you and a lot of them are free. Best of luck in your business venture.
Darin
It is so true that when you love what you do and you have such great passion for it that it's well not like work at all!
That's how I feel about my ATM business and about real estate investing!
Great post Harv!
Don't forget to make sure someone is ready, willing and able to give you their money for the product or service that you love to provide. Too often I hear of people who chase some entrepreneurial dream before they've validated that there are in fact paying customers for the product or service. Check that first, then go do what you love and be the best at it!
Greatly put! If we all just follow our passion and do what we love – this world will be a lot different. It starts with ourselves.
Life is too short to be living in fear and obligations. And life will be a shame if we let our fear & obligations be in the way of what we could have achieved. Time is now!
So true! Great encouragment to live into our passions. You can't live big while thinking small! Passion is always connected to living from your heart and not staying stuck in your head.
Great post!
I believe people should understand what they want from a business FIRST and then proceed to DESIGN the business around those requirements.
I was a slave to my last business…eventually I figured out the BYOB method – build your own business.
Now I've designed & created a business that allows me to spend 4 months of the year sailing and traveling – while teaching people the BYOB method the rest of the time.
Have a Happy Weekend Everyone!

I think that people do not make the change to the work they love because they are afraid of the work and they are not feeling enough pain in their current situation to make a change. How much pain does it take you to change?

How can I help?
Very good point,
If you don't love what you do then you are not going to be wealthy or happy. Sad is that people don't have passion linked to the wealth; they think about making money as “working” instead of calling it passion, I think that this is the biggest misconception in business.
Have a nice day,

Wow! I really needed this today. Work up with my mind in a “stinkin' thinkin'” mode.
I know what I'm passionate about, and now that my time is 100% my own to direct (no J.O.B.) I choose to go flying down the fast lane with what I love to do.
Thanks again. Live with passion and purpose,
Vanessa
I think one resource we all have that we tend to overlook are our own thoughts and our gut. Many times when we get an inspired thought, we dismiss it because it was our own idea. Then we find a way to talk ourselves out of it, deeming as a silly idea. We need to trust that we're always connected to the Source and when we get inspired thought or a burning desire for something, we should trust ourselves and follow that path. And believe the Universe will make a way for us to achieve our goals.
My passion IS working with small business owners to find ways to balance family and business. I first COMPLETELY agree that if any of it falls under the “obligation” category it won't get done effectively. I also agree that obligations will drain your energy for other important things.
I DON'T agree you should just forget your obligations. Instead I work with my clients through simple exercises to discharge and delegate the obligations. For instance a mother who's daughter threw a fit each time she left for business travel, we energetically delegated the responsibility to the daughter to feel loved AND we thought through simple ways they could stay connected while Mom was away. We also incorporated the use of affirmations and re-programing of the mother. The situation is now discharged and they have obtain peaceful departures.
For the husband who's wife wanted him to spend more time with the kids we work through obligations at work to energetically release his “need” to be there so often. He happily leaves work and comfortably enjoys outings with his children on a regular basis.
So yes, you must release the feeling of “obligation” from both your work and your family, but NOT release the duty you have to both.

Lots of LOVE for your new direction!
Hi Harv! How are you?
I'm from Brazil. I read your book and I loved.
It made me think about my life, my parents, my work, everything…
I'm in process of change now!! I hope to soon bring good news!
Tanks for all the advice! They'll be essential for a bright future.
Bye Bye
Marina
Fantastic post and very timely! After doing hours of contemplation and reflection what helped me was to look at the ‘common denominator” in what I loved. By looking at the common thread that ran though my passions (I’m sure I’m not the only one that has more then one passion), I was able to find the essence of my passion.
If someone is stuck at thinking of how they can generate revenue from stamp collection, I would suggest asking “what else does this represent?” It may be organizational skills, it maybe an eye for antiques…how knows. The point here is don’t take the task at face value, look at what value do you derive from it? What else does this represent?
This has helped and I hope it will help you.
I have regrets in my life for making the wrong decision because of obligations. but now I'm sure doing what I really love now. Thank you for this great post!
Harv,
Great post! I'm glad that I found your site. I look forward to coming back and learning more in the future.

As a freelancer I actively looked for a project where I can work 4 days out of 5 to keep me and my family alive.
The 'spare' day is fully dedicated to build my dream.
This way there is no ' I have-to succeed because we need money' feeling or stress.
Offcourse I spend more time to build my dream than just that day.. but you get the point.
Great post Harv. I am now working on starting a new business so I can quit my 8-5 J-O-B! I don't know exactly what that business is yet. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to narrow in and do what I love & get pd for it?
I am “stuck” in a job that I am obligated to work every single day because I am the primary bread winner, have a mortgage and am the primary financial support for 3 children (my ex gave up his rights). I know and believe that I am supposed to leave Corp. America so much so that I put a plan in place. I founded a non-profit (SPARK, Inc.) for Single Parents in June 2009 and a for-profit Organic Life Products. We specialize in all natural, affordable health and beauty products that enhance beauty, build confidence and improve overall health. Quite frankly, I know I have to do my passion. I am not full of disdain with my Corp. job, I just know I'm worth so much more and I'm simply exhausted with working for someone else. I began selling my products at the Flea Market and I plan on saving enough to open the Organic Life Products store in 2011.
In order to answer that, one would first need to know what it is you are passionate about.
Hi Amr,
First, you need to know your “why”. Why do you want to start your own business? Define, and envision, how your life will be. And then begin the work, building your new business around that! There are a ton of options and directions you can go, but you must decide what you are passionate about once you define your “why”. Cheers! Elizabeth
Hi Harv,
I love your metaphor of the fast and the slow lane and looking for the exit.
I personally find life a tremendously exciting adventure new roads are always opening up for me. Untold opportunites, appear out of nowhere. It's like having a tree that is loaded down with fruits, and all one has to do is to keeping picking and tasting them.
Living with passion is really important and the more you do it, the less fear there is, because eventually learn that it is the only way.
Thank you so much Harv for taking the time to write. I appreciate your wisdom.
This resonated with me Shaf, thanks. And to Harv thank you also for the blog.

yes yes yes harv, i agree completely ….. i have recently gotten really real on the biz i cerated and found i really wasnt passionate about it, thus it could never grow… and thus, i wasn't enjoying it. AND i had a huge mortgage hinging on it, so i decided to take a few steps back to enable me to move forward…. i subcontracted the work, sold a house and started up my new biz … and i feel so happy! i am loving my true love, my true passion now, and i KNOW great things await me. its been scary and being early days there's lots 2 do, but with my passion flowing, i know i'll blossom, shine and rocket along… AND i'll be able to do so much more for so many more people now. praise buddha i woke up and got real and took the leap! and i encourage all to do so (with awareness of course, i planned this all very responsibly)…. bless u harv 4 shining the light on this subject ….. and encouraging other's to tap into their SOULJUICE
