How to Be Good and Rich At the Same Time
What’s the root of all evil? Money, right? Wrong!
You’d be amazed how many people think being rich will make their lives worse, like they won’t be judged for who they are but for their money. So even though they want to be rich, they shirk it at the same time.
This subtle yet profound fear keeps people from the truth: it’s good to be rich! Not just for the lifestyle, but because in the end, being rich makes us into better people.
I can hear someone screaming, “What about the rich jerk who doesn’t tip even though the service was great? How’s money made him a better person?” Here’s a clue: whoever you are, money will make you more of that. If you are a kind, generous person who attracted like-minded people before being rich, you’ll continue to do so after because now you’ll be able to be even more generous on a larger scale.
It’s our duty to become rich if we can. We have an obligation to grow to our greatest potential, developing the character that can achieve and care about other people at the same time. This is the growth that will ultimately make us into better people.
So what is the root of all evil? It’s not stacks of paper. Fear is at the root of our thoughts that tell us becoming rich will make things worse and take us away from being loved, accepted, and well-thought of.
If we don’t accept that being rich can be a good thing for ourselves and for others, fear and doubt creates envy. Envy says, “I can’t have that, and I resent those that do.” Acceptance of what you really want says, “I can have that, and I will be a better person because of it.”
So instead of secretly despising rich people, we should affirm them, even if they’re frickin jerks. We’re not affirming who they are as people—we’re affirming the idea that it’s okay to be rich. You can make a choice not to be selfish, arrogant, and thoughtless. Fear and envy negate thoughts of wealth and result in feelings and actions that take you away from it, even when you’re not aware of it.
Here’s a simple exercise in overcoming fear. Think of something that you’ve always wanted to do but never got around to, and just do it (Don’t break any laws, though!). Even if you end up not wanting to do it again, at least you know instead of just holding back for whatever reason. You’ve broken through something, and other breakthroughs become easier. It’s the only way we’ll ever grow.
This is not just about being rich, although that is one of the goals. This is about growing ourselves to become bigger than the obstacles we’ll face in life. The more wonder we experience and challenges we face, the more we expand to be able to take in more; the good and the bad; the money and the problems that come with it. In the end, striving toward becoming rich can only serve you, and if you choose it, serve others as well. How’s that a bad thing?

Some people do say that being rich will not make one happy and there have been cases like that, but certainly not because of money. One can certainly be happy and rich.
Thanks for this Harv.
I recently did an exercise where I looked at my fears, beliefs, stories and judgements about money as well as the strategies I use to manage these fears, all to help identify my context around money. Holy cow what a mess of BS! 🙂 It's incredible what fictitious garbage we keep in our minds and hold to be true and real.
What makes it most challenging for me to overcome this context/paradigm of thought is my other paradigm: that I need physical/tangible evidence before I believe something.
The pairing of 'money is evil and I'll never get it and only selfish, deceptive, conniving worms are rich anyways' and 'if this is just a belief, then show me the money!', certainly sets up an environment within my mind for failure and reinforcement of the context/paradigm.
sometimes I think: well if some rich person just gave me a million to play with, then all would be good. But of course the money is not the issue — it's the context. I need to break through the belief system I hold to be true.
One exercise I've taken on is to consider money to be like water, an abundant source of water. And my role is to act as a channel for water… not to hold onto it, but to expand my capacity to channel it — in other words, become a bigger hose (I'm a straw at the moment!) for money.
Do you have any suggestions as to how to breakthrough these faulty and dis-empowering beliefs?
Money is a tool. It is completely up to you how you use it. I find it even more helpful to take 5 minutes every other day and visualize what kind of person you would be and what kind of life you would have when I accomplish my life and financial goals.
great article. The root of evil is not having money, you then feel less than and feel forced to do things you would never think of doing. People can tell when you don't have money and they play mind games with you. Money is necessary, money is power and money is “GOOD”.
Thank you Harv, again you have helped me put into prospective on what my next step needs to be to obtain the growth I need make as a whole being. HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!!!
I'm reading an excellent book about facing our fears entitled, “Feel the fear and do it anyway” by Susan Jeffers. You will never, ever get rid of all feelings of fear especially if you continue to grow and expand your life's experiences BUT you can learn to conquer your fear by doing the very thing that makes you fearful. The more you do it, the less you feel the fear … or you get more comfortable feeling the fear and it becomes less dramatic, paralyzing and controlling. We are looking to purchase 53 acres raw land for $413,000 and build our dream home which will cost about $1.2 million with about 14,000 SF. The kicker is we live in a small 1300 SF home worth about $65,000. Talk about getting out of our comfort zone. But we believe we can do it and we are ramping up our income to get it done.
Great, Harv! Thank you very much!!! Best, Genia
Hi Harv, the truth about this adage is that it is either wrongly quoted or used as an alibi by those who form the habit of using it for any personal reasons. As a matter of fact the original version says:”The LOVE (yes, LOVE) of money……..!! Every reasonable human being knows that lack of money has lead too many people into doing things which under normal circumstance they would never do. Any right thinking person knows that being financially free is the most positive thing that can happen to a man. Unless a man is naturaly lazy, careless or an outright dommy, money stands as an antidote against procrastination of any good and viable programs or projects he may have. Good people become better with money in hand PERIOD!! Thank you Harv for your progams, for the positive role you are playing in other people's lives. I like what you are doing and would suggerst you take this wonderful thing abroad outside the USA, for people just like me. More grease to your elbows. KEEP THE BALL ROLLING!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Harv. You made my day and probably many, many days with the simple statement that “whoever you are, money will make you more of that”. I realized I actually am a pretty good person and that the times in my life when I had money I used it well, helped others, gave to charities and other things like that. Your statement freed something in me and I feel much more able to pursue the real estate investment career I have been backing away from for years and years.
Once again, a great blog post! You're right on when you say that money is an amplifier. I've been fortunate to meet and get to know quite a few very wealthy people. They have been the most loving and giving…but they were that way before the wealth came along.
I look forward to great wealth because I already enjoy giving. It's important to give, but it's also imperative to learn to enjoy receiving. Many people are uncomfortable with receiving. I admit, I've had to work on that one myself.
Thanks for putting it out there. I've enjoyed receiving your knowledge!
great as always Harv!
Thanks a lot for this, Harv!
Greetings from Switzerland
Money doesn't change us, it amplifies who we are.
Thank you Harv for sharing writing this. I totally agree with you that being rich makes us better people. The sooner we realize this, the faster we can move forward and be truly rich.
Hi Harv,
You have clearly pointed out one of the reasons why many people remain poor
without even knowing it. It pays to get to know rich people personally and learn from them
about how you can get rich yourself.
As usual, you are spot on.
Thanks
Thank you very much, Harv.
I followed you and I will follow your ideas, that make me get more money and be better in my life.
Thank you, Harv.
Money actually is a just piece of paper. Whether money is good or not, it depends on the one who use it.
We can use money to kill someone but we also can use money to heal someone.
It is human mindset to determine if rich is good or bad.
I love the affirmation 'I CAN HAVE THAT AND I WILL BE A BETTER PERSON BECAUSE OF IT' I will use it often from now on!
Thank u T. Harv!!!!!!!!
'I can have that and I will be a better person because of it'
I love it and will use it often!
Thanks Harv!!!!!!! x
i find your post very inspiring…motivating… 🙂
Some numbskull says “money is the root of all evil” yet they have a bank account, and then head out everyday, and work their brains out to acquire this “evil thing”; and they use this “evil thing” to pay the doctor, buy food, pay their mortgages, send their kids off to college! I call that schizophrenic! My advice: make all the money you are capable of, and if it bites your fingers, give it to charities; they know how to distribute it. Simple! Thanks, T. Harv Eker.
the encouraging and inspiring comments exilerate our fine feelings. thanks harv!.
Ever since reading your book and going to MMI to change my Money BluePrint, I've focused my intentions on 'not just being good' anymore. The intelligent marketer with no money but helps everyone else get rich is no longer my way of life. Thank you for your help so that I truly can be good and rich! I'm on my way!
Thank you Harv. This principle (“whoever you are, money will make you more of that”) is one of the most important eye-opening lecture I learned from your book. And I keep reading that book again and again for almost a year now. Your mission to help us change our attitude toward money for the better, and help us become rich and happy really makes this world a better place. I appreciate you!
I fully agree with you Augustine
Thankyou for your inspiring talk today in Melbourne at the National Achievers Congress. Your message aligns with my work as a spiritual healer. Looking forward to being a VIP at your next talk in Melbourne in November. Connie Helbig
Thank u Harv. I liked most The Millionairs Mind. I liked it and enjoyed it most.
all the v.best…chris
very very true….esp the sentence whoever you are; money makes you more of that….and it is much better and comfortable to be rich and good rather than be poor and good….
Excellent thoughts and an eye-opener.
The actual saying is: The love of money is the root of all evil. Notice where the emphasis is place. Money is nothing but means of trade. The love of money is a destroyer of all that is good in man.
luv d title of this Post
Saludos cordiales, Daria Kosseva
Great article! I actually did some research on that verse in the Bible that says “the love of money is the root of all evil” and if you go back to the original translation, “greed” is the word…not money. Very interesting…
