How To Avoid Shiny Object Syndrome And Stay On The Fast Track To Success

A lot of people have the shiny-object syndrome. They jump from whatever looks cool and interesting at the moment to whatever comes along next, without really seeing the first thing through.
I had the same problem for 12 years, and think that half of the people reading this, if not more, have this same problem, but what can you do about it?
Two words focus and commitment.
I spent 12 years doing whatever I could possibly do to be successful. I had 14 different jobs and 12 different businesses in 12 years. Do you think that’s focused? No. What was my result? Broke. Make a little. Broke. Make a lot. Broke.
I got so damn sick of being broke and jumping from one opportunity to the next that I realized I wasn’t following through 100% because the next thing was coming into view, and I thought that the next thing was going to be faster, smarter, better. Why should I stick with this thing that’s really hard?
It was habitual. Why did I choose the thing that was really hard? It wasn’t hard when I chose it. It was beautiful, but then I made it hard. The shiny object is shiny until you get there. Then it becomes dull and ugly.
What I learned is a huge lesson. It’s not the outside circumstances or vehicle that’s going to make or break you. I spent 12 years looking for the right vehicle. Do you know what I found out? There’s no right vehicle. There’s only the right you within the vehicle that you love.
When I was going through that continuous cycle of being broke, one of my close friends on the West Coast called me up and said, “You have to get into this business. I’m killing it. You’ve been looking for a business; this is the one to get into.”
I said, “Oh my god. Thanks for letting me know.” My dream was coming true. Someone I know is actually killing it, and he’s making $20,000 to $30,000 a week. I’m thinking it’s going to be amazing.
Six months later, I was broke again, and he was already a millionaire and doing even better. I said, “How on earth could you be doing so great and I’m doing so bad?”
I finally looked in the mirror and said, “Do you know what? It’s not the business. It’s me.”
I felt like crying. I felt like I stabbed myself in the heart. That’s how I started putting two and two together and working on me. I said, “If I work on me and just do something I really enjoy, let me try that.” I then became a millionaire in two and a half years after that. I hope you relate to this yourself someday.
I committed to staying focused on one thing until I got rich. You don’t have to do that, but I say this: Commit to something for a minimum of three years. Why three years? That’s how long it takes to systemize something so it can work without you.
Don’t even think of leaving it. It’s like the Army. You’re in for three years, period. There’s no going away. You commit to it.
I study Zen and Buddhist stuff a lot. It’s not that I’m Buddhist, but I think their philosophy is helpful. There’s a saying … “Thinking about a better tomorrow is what prevents me from having a better today.”
Here’s the mantra for you:
“Thinking about having a better business is what prevents me from succeeding in this business.”
“Thinking about a better job is what prevents me from succeeding in this job.”
Why is that? It’s because you’re taking your mind off of the present moment. The only time you can be happy and successful is right now. You can’t be successful tomorrow because it doesn’t exist. You can’t be successful in the past because that’s gone. Your shiny object is blinding you and taking your mind off of what is necessary to get done today.
You gain focus by experimenting. You say, “I’m going to do an experiment on myself. I’m going to commit to something for three years, and I’m not getting off of it. Even if I go broke, I’m not getting off of it.”
I’ll tell you what. You won’t go broke. You’ll do well because you’ll focus on it. There won’t be any thought about getting off of the expressway.
This was one of my biggest lessons. It changed my life. I hope the same happens for you.

I CAN’T UNDERSTAND. WHAT IS MY COMMENTS ?
Another great lesson, Harv. Thanks. Never hurts to read and re-read this one!
Harv, you hit the nail on the head….here is the kicker for me though. ..I have never done anything that doesn’t involve the selling of an item and helping persons..
I have done Avon, Marykay, Herbalife, my own tshirt line,Melalueca, Organa gold, exporting of goods to the island if Jamaica, real estate investing and being a mortgage broker.I have also had jobs in between these ventures.
my quest has been to earn income from multiple streams that will provide me the flexibility to be a present mom and avoid the common lifestyle that most have settled for…I am not satisfied earning $10 to $12hr in a call centre being programmed like a robot, having to repeat myself in the name of quality.
I am however, aware and accepting that I need to commit to one thing long enough as you put it to truly master it, and yield money.
upon analysis though the things I have stuck to the most are two things. …exporting goods and Real estate.
You have now challenged me to choose one exclusively. ..how do i do this? I need to earn to live while building my dream.

Wow…this is exactly what I needed to hear, thank you Harv. So many times I’ve gotten impatient with the process to success that I failed to follow through and instead just jumped ship, only to find it a mirage that quickly dissipated. The reality is success is a process that requires time. I will commit to making my book The Millionaire Mind Frame a #1 bestseller and building my business into a fully systemized cash-flowing machine that serves thousands! Thanks for all you do Harv, I accept the challenge to stay committed! God bless
Very good lesson Harv, thank you. I also think it ist important to commit to one job, BUT it has to be the one you love. Your storry tells us so ;-). I was Nurse but then I decided to study IT. Incredible for someone who has very little knowledge of IT. Many people loughed at me. However I commited to this and now I am Master of IT. My first job was not the one I loved, I didn`t like the people at this company and I broke. Now I am looking for a new job, and I did not accepted a job that was offerd to me, because I know, it is not the one I love. I keep searching, this ist not nice, but it feels a lot much better then having a job, I do not love. As soon as I found such a job, I will commit!
♥
Thanks for sharing this. I did it many times in my life. But now, i making different. I was in MMI Brazil at november and your words really touched me. Im more focused and commitment in what i love to do and everything is changing now… thanks a lot for that! MMI was wonderful! And this lesson too.
Hello T Harv Eker, thanks for reminding me that work focused and committed to one thing at a time allows you to enhance our chances of success. All were born with predispositions and unique skills, focusing on what one really loves to do and what we are successful allows us to enjoy life, to be on the right track, add value to the world and be successful. Of course, it is important to set clear, achievable and precise objectives, and engage in key dates for achieving them. This has worked very well for me. Best Regards
Hi, Harv! It’s so funny that I’m reading this today as I just recently (3 weeks ago) made a commitment to get certified to teach The ONE Thing, a class based on the best selling book by Gary Keller. It’s all about leading an extraordinary life by focusing on one thing, which is exactly what you’re saying here. I’m so excited, and my commitment is for the rest of my life, not just 3 years!
Thanks Harv,, I agree every word you have spoken, or written down. It has been over FIVE YEARS now !!! Our letter of ”Intent” will be on my desk by this’ weekend !! It was tough,, VERY tough. But I have made it. 2016 will be my best year EVER. Can’t wait, and I will keep you informed. Herman from South Africa.
Danke, stimmt genau!
Totally agree. For many years I thought that to make money I should do many things and many businesses but like you wrote – it’s not about vehicle. It’s about vehicle and driver because if we don’t know how to drive then even the best vehicle won’t help us achieve our goal.
I am in the first month of my three-year commitment to my new business! This is something I have dreamed of for years and yes I went through the exact same struggle that you talked about, so I have felt that pain. Because of your teachings over the last year I have finally chosen something I love and have fully committed and it feels amazing I know I’m going to be wildly successful and a millionaire within years! Thank you Harv and Jesse for all you have given and all you continue to do!
Thanks Harv. I tried many businesses thinking the problem was in the business itself. That quite an insight. As from today i will commit and focus on my current business for 3 years.
Harv
I follow you for many years, this IS the best advice ever for every entrepreneur on planet earth.
Thanks Harv for sharing this nice pearl of knowledge. It’s definitely going to help every one to be focused on one task and be successful.
Just shared this with my best friend. She has shiny object syndrome x infinity. One of the things we love about each other is that ee are both endlessly creative. She has the courage to be self employed and has been for 30 years. I do not have that courage. During her divorce she developed a habit of scrambling to make ends meet and ‘doing whatever it takes’. God bless the woman, she kept her kids in the best school in the city, got them both into two of the best schools in the country, and was able to care for her aging mother in her own home for almost ten years. At the end of all that, she is now struggling with three businesses. Hasn’t seen a dime of income in 8 weeks. Watching and staying out of worry for her, but I don’t know what to say that will make a difference. Maybe this article will help.
It sounds like your friend got through the tough goals of making sure her kids and her mom were ok. Now she must do the same for herself – and that means recognising that she is worthy. Sometimes we don’t succeed because we don’t believe we deserve it, or we habitually put others first and accept what’s left over. I wonder what stories she tells herself about money and success and why she can’t have it. So much brainwashing we have been subjected to – time to rise strong!
thank you harv, your lessons and experiences are helping me a lot, you really teach the best way to achieve great things in life. really valuable information. i’ve also found myself many times confused because of that matter of the ” right vehicle”, but of course like you said it´s really about the right you + commitment and focus on one single thing. i know i have to work a lot on myself to achieve my dreams in lifeand of course and that actually the hardest part; but yet i accept the challenge of the 3 years, but the commitment will also be for the rest of my life!!!
Thank you Harv! This came at a right time! Thank you so much for sharing 🙂
You are so right with this lesson, Harv. In my life, it applies to more than job or business. It sounds a bit like my thinking. You helped me
saying to myself “Yes, you’re right. It’s like you said it. You can’t find a better place. You must be better in the place you are right now. Thanks a lot for sending this lesson, Harv. I can’t say when this will happen, but I hope that I’ll meet you in person.
Thats very true!

Wise words.
After I made the commitment to focus on one business, I have saved a lot of money, time and energy. I couldn’t be happier.
This is the best article I have ever red for the creattion of right attitude and setting of right expectations!. And the best thing is to remind those lessons in the beginning of the year so I can feed my mind with the right things and strenghten my commitment to succeed in my business! Thank you fro sharing this lesson!
THANKs for the reminder. I started the business some 17 months ago and there were ups and downs. I stayed focus for the work and to have a foundation. It was not easy.
