How To Know Which Passion Is Right For You To Pursue

One of the common problems I’ve noticed people have isn’t about not knowing what they want out of life. It’s that sometimes they have too many passions to choose from, whether it’s entrepreneurship or startups, technology, filmmaking, screenwriting, book writing, music, personal development coaching, you name it.
People know they can’t do all of them, but at the same time they want to be successful with all of them. How do you know which one to go for?
Let me explain how I learned the hard way about picking something and staying with it. For 12 years, I was doing all of these businesses at once, jumping from one thing to another. The result of all of that? I was broke.
Finally, I chose just one business based not on how much money I would make, but on the fact that I was really interested in that topic, which was fitness.
I made a commitment that I would not leave that business until I was either legally bankrupt or a millionaire. In two and a half years, I became a millionaire.
So, if you have many passions, which one do you commit to?
Commit to something you’re passionate about right now! Or if you’re passionate about three things, what opportunity is in front of you right now?
For example, there were a few other passions I had other than fitness, but the fitness business was just starting at the time. I found a model to go by, decided to go with it, and it worked.
What is an opportunity that presents itself right now for you? That will at least narrow your options down.
The biggest issue with not knowing which route to take is that most people make the question “What do I do” this ball and chain for life decision. They’re thinking, “This is going to be my whole life here.”
Don’t be such a drama queen. What if it’s not a life decision? What if you took the pressure off?
In other words, choose and commit to something now, but don’t make it seem like you’re locked with that choice like it’s a prison of eternity. Give it a few years and if it doesn’t work, move on to one of your other passions.
Better yet, do one at a time and succeed at as many as you can, but be strategic about it.
Here’s my example. Many moons ago I was going to write a book. I hadn’t written anything before. I didn’t have a course or a training company at the time. I just knew, kind of, what I wanted to write about.
But then another voice came with an idea to create a seminar company. Wouldn’t it be better to test out the material live and see if people are actually interested?
It would take me a year to write a book, but for me to stand up in front of people and give this information, I could do that in a week. So I got eight people together at my house, tried out the material, and they loved it.
People started asking if they could bring their friends next time. Sure enough, I had another eight people two weeks later at the house, and I did the same program with some tweaks. Then I started writing up the program.
It took me a lot shorter time to write an event than to write a book. In about two weeks, I had a full one-day program. I put it out there, people loved it, and asked if I had anything more. It took on a life of its own.
I didn’t write the book until about 10 years later, but by then I had 250,000 people that had taken my trainings. When I wrote the book, guess what happened? It was a #1 New York Times bestseller. That was the best thing that could have happened to me.
Had I started out with the book first, I’d probably still be broke today. It just made sense to me to start small with what’s easiest, and I did. It was in my area of passion, which was training, personal development and business development.
I didn’t ask, “What’s the main thing in my life?” I asked, “What’s next?
What’s next for you?

For Your Freedom,

This is exactly my situation by the moment, I know real state is my passion, buy by the moment I need more money to live, I have a parthner in my company and we do not take out non if money, for be bigger each day we reinvert everything
At the time I match buissnes many oportunities, And I feel I am not focus and I could be lost so easy , but I am looking for Money
I read your history and I feel emathy with you … How can I resolve that?
Only focus real state???
Please understand that “Real Estate” cuts a very wide swath. There is real estate brokerage, real estate finance, real estate investing, residential and commercial, property management, project development, and on and on.
I suggest focusing on 2 niches that excite you. Some people do well with wholesaling, while some others prefer to own income property for the tax advantages and passive income.
An interesting niche (for me at least) is commercial mortgage brokerage, because the fees are much higher than residential mortgage brokerage, far less regulation (some states don’t even require licensing for commercial mortgage brokerage while all states require licensing for residential mortgage brokerage). You can build a clientele list of commercial borrowers, and later you can solicit your clientele to finance your own income property acquisitions (this is called “syndication”). You can own income property with none of your own cash invested by leveraging other people’s money (OPM).
Real estate finance offers huge leverage, and T. Harv Eker is a strong advocate of applying leverage in your businesses.
That’s my two cents worth. Your mileage may vary.
Love this. Very timely. Thank you.
Hi, T
I`m facing the same problem but have recently realized than I`m passion about online marketing. I just don`t know how to make money from it. But i`ve learned so much about that i`m confident I can give good presentations on it , I`v also been searching on How to Start a Seminar Production Business as i have great public speaking skill an I`m an active member of Toastmasters International. Any advise, on how I can go about start my Seminar Production business? I have 3 books available online as eBooks.
Hello Mthokozisi, i think a lot of people can benefit from online marketing seminars, myself included, I recently started my own photographic company and just really realized i am not online savvy when it comes to marketing myself, i am actually trying to see if i can get a book but i know a seminar will be a lot more effective. Go for it, target budding entrepreneurs.
Thans You Harv!
Thuis lessen wat Just wat I needed. I started my own business 2 months ago and felt drowning in rules and opportunities. I want to create video training lessons but this needs equipement and a lot of time. The idea to start with a little event suits me well. No problem to organize such a thing.
I will start immediately!
Thanks again Harv!
Greetings,
Kit
Great post.. It initiated lot of thoughts in my mind..
Thank you, Harv, you’re so inspiring. I just finished my new book but I know that I need to share with people by another way, and you just told me how and why! I need to begin with what I am here and now and go step by step, sharing with people the best I can, with passion, of course. Thanks a lot ! 🙂
This is my precise problem! This was such an interesting post, and I am y narrowing it down to 1 passion at a time!
Hi Harv, I have been to one of your Millionaire mind program, fantastic training! After your session decided to write my first ebook, (The Power of Quality Thinking) I was happy when publishing in Amazon, but very poor sale. I jumped into a new business, but failed. Now I am starting all over again, but have been reading my notes from your training and think that this time I will have sucsess, thanks to You Harv.
I don’t know if your are familiar with Robert Kiyosaki. I only recently learned that he had created his Cashflow game first and then only wrote the book in order to sell the game…
You have to promote your book, maybe with speaking engagements.
The idea of asking myself what I need to do NEXT has been instrumental in not getting overwhelmed. Because of my first coaching call, I ventured out to get help with marketing. I actually ended up signing up for an online program for my marketing instead of hiring somebody to do it for me. I am consistently and constantly putting 1 foot in front of the other while I continue to ask what I need to do NEXT. I know what my passion is and this is all in my face at the moment and I’m going for it!
Hi Harv
I really appreciate all the posts from each one…My situation is similar and different at the same time..I really love talking, encouraging people and motivating them to take action…Motivational speaking is good but what do I have to say that hasn’t already been said a million times…As far as MONEY is concerned I know that I am already a millionaire and I believe that this is true with every fiber of my being but I need to get to the place/state where it is able to manifest itself.
Thanks Harv this wAs just when I needed it the most
Hi T,I most say a big thank you to the person who introduced your book to me and also appricait you T Harv Eker. I am a driver with a different, but i have passion on personal development and making money online.
A few years ago I rambled by many passions ago, but since I managed to order my inner world, the road was opened. It was like seeing the light that I wanted to find, so I have very clear that my commitment is to be an International Environmental Education Coach inspire millions of people to choose a better quality of life through interdisciplinarity. The commitment to be rich is a consequence of my motivation.
Blessings for all
Great post! Very much needed now. Thanks Harv
I discovered my passion, while I have been on T Harv Eker’s training since 2015.
Real Estate investing for passive income and healthcare pharmacy business, which I am going to systemise are my two chosen business that I am going to focus on.
I have also registered on a stocks and shares investing course with T Harv’s trainer in London, and I am very excited about this course, as I will use this strategy to create capital income, and long term investment strategy, for capital growth.
The above three will be my wealth strategy that I have chosen to focus on.
So I am now sorted !
Thank-you Mr. T Harv Eker for sharing your wisdom, insight and knowledge.
I know I’m good at talking to people. I know I can be a very good coach I to be an entrepreneur too. I love reading and I think i can write a book. People seem to see something bright in me because I seem to be good for anything but anytime I try something new it ends in disappointment. I have read lot of books about self development and soo many things about money…I’m trying very hard to put things i have learned to practice but I still can’t figure things out. Really i have passion for coaching. I love given great ideas and how to start something new and never giver. I practice what I teach people but they seem to get things done whilst I don’t. People are always greatfull for what I teach them but I don’t get the results myself. I hope you can help me something. Thank you
Hi Godfred, you have spelled it all out. i was once in your shoe until i took a step further. Reading books alone is not enough, you need a coach, or a training program on your passion. i mean you to leverage on their working system to see result in your business. I wish you the best.
I love the way you write Harv! You seem to find always the right way to say something… Thanks!!
I appreciate the time you took to write and present us with this article. The article arrived in my inbox with perfect timing. You see, I had followed my passion for 8 years and this month I am at a point of decision. My passion was to help people diagnosed with seizures live a higher quality of daily life through personal development. I now realize I was not serving members of my charity, I was creating dependence and becoming co-dependent myself. As I reignite my passion to help others through personal development, I am expanding. Now I must decide HOW I plan to do this effectively while getting paid what I am worth. Any thoughts?
I loved this article! Soo good and I’m glad my intuition told me to read it even though a few minutes before reading it I was drowsy. Not once did I doze off from this. Plus I am currently heading towards a few different career choices and this was good timing as others have said! There is coaching, music and healing. I’d say that coaching is a little closer than the others.
Thank you Harv for explaining one of the biggest challenges I have. Knowing how to follow your passion and choose which passion to follow when you have so many is a headache. Thanks for clarifying!
Cherished Mr T. Harv Eker
Kindly I have a question to you, you wrote here that you have tested your training passion at first with inviting eight people to your house, the question is, did you took money from those eight people as a tester also or is was only training tester and what was the people attitude and opinion when you requested them firstly to pay for your training ?
Sorry for the fault, the true words for the question is…. Did you take… , not, Did you took…
Thank you in advance
This is exactly my situation. I’m passionate about singing, I’m currently working in IT and also doing part time business. . Which one I need to give more time, I’m confused? ?
I know my passion vary well.I tried many time many time but i always stuck by Newton’s first law of motion(law of inertia).
What to do.
Only a couple of days ago I bought an ebook with this topic. Well, the topic is manifesting (money) and the first lesson is about finding my passion, more over, finding my mission, my purpose in life.
And I’m stuck. I don’t think I have any passion, at least not something that can make me money.
So, I figure I persue the crowdfunding and when I find my passion, mission and/or purpose it doesn’t matter whether I can monetize it or not 🙂
I’m looking forward to the webinar, maybe I get an idea how to find it… and of course keep on reading the ebook. Even if I’m stuck right now, I gotta move on.
Thanks for this.
Thanks Harv!
That was just what I needed! I think I can narrow my possibilities now, find the one that fits best and start small. I knew that I have to focus and concentrate but didn´t know where to spend my time.
This is what I needed to read to begin to pinpoint a passion, thank you all.
Very true Harv, I too started my photography workshops with a smaller group of people and then expanded. As you say, it’s all about doing what is possible and easy first and then take things as they come and scale.
Hello Harv..i just discovered you from my facebook..out of curiosity i clicked in your site…i listened to your video and im so taken in because of your passion to help people like myself…you see, my financial status and my whole life as a whole has been a continuous struggle for as long as i can remember…i wanted to get a copy of your book but i dont know where to buy it…im from the Philippines…
Thank you for the post! I’m a “need to narrow” person. What I’m deciding is which way to “micro narrow” in the niche; because more, complementary aspects, of the niche can be woven in incrementally. Even three different passion areas meet in the middle of a Venn diagram, showing me how aspects of my passion areas intersect & can be addressed under a micro-niche umbrella offering that I create..and can become fuller & fuller as I take a step down this hallway (kind of like different pieces of art decorating the micro-niche hallway where three different passions meet). I appreciate that even “JUST” focusing on one of three elements in the niche hallway…for a while..makes total sense. My ultimate decision will be based on what excites me most, that I could do all day….because doing it all day is what I’m moving toward! : ) (And making it passive in the process) One passion aspect at a time..most especially to see how well my offering works & how it’s received. I’m now giving myself a final deadline of decision-making & implementation on the first step. I feel so grateful for this opportunity that I have created for myself! Makes me really want to rock it, to help many people!!! : )
Thank you Harv.
You are the second person making me understand that having a burning desire to achieve my dream of being financially free does not mean I cannot stop with my current business, and pursue another goal that will make me move towards that goal in an easier manner.
Quite a good idea, your great.
Thank you for this writing. Right content at the right time in my life! xx
This one paragraph – even just on its own was a HUGE lightbulb going off in my head…
“The biggest issue with not knowing which route to take is that most people make the question “What do I do” this ball and chain for life decision. They’re thinking, “This is going to be my whole life here.””
Harv THANK YOU so much for shining a light FINALLY on what my real issue is. I own my business but it’s been heading off in several different directions. I KNOW the core business (which I started 3 years ago) is really where I can make my money, but it’s not the most exciting thing to do in the world ?. Reading this blog & watching your webinar has made me realise that’s why I wasn’t fully committing. I was afraid of it becoming a chain around my neck for life! Now, I’m just gonna go for it & see where the path takes me.
Thank you
PS: I’ve signed up to your new Get Rich Doing What You Love programme. Raring to get started ?
Thank you for dishing out from your well of knowledge.
Mr T Harv , your touch of gold can be felt each time I set my eyes on an of your peace of writing ….thank you
since younger career days, I realized that I had a knack of managing projects. what started off as a job and duty became a passion. my clients grew in numbers.
the passion stayed with me as I took on difficult clients, hostile environments and tight timelines.
I realized that it is not an easy route. passion has to be fed and nurtured
