Why Your Beliefs Are Neither True Nor False And How Those Beliefs Affect The Outcome Of Your Life

You can join just about any random conversation and ask, “Can you believe some of the things people think these days?” Who wouldn’t agree with you? There’s always a reason for us to think some other people are crazy just because we all have our own particular world view.
However, get a little bit more specific about your beliefs and things change. “I can’t believe people think XYZ.” Some people might agree with you. Some might give you a horrified look and respond, “Well, actually, I can’t believe people think ABC”. And then you’re either in for a lively debate or some seriously awkward moments.
We all believe in something, even if we’re not outwardly expressing it all the time. We’d like to think that we derive our beliefs based on “rational decisions.” That’s partly true, but the truth is that we still mostly act on what we believe rather than what we know. How long ago was it that people just “knew” the sun revolved around the earth?
Beliefs are only strong opinions at best. They color and filter our view of everything. The problem is we get used to these filters and forget that we have them on, then we believe that the way we see things is the way it is, which of course may not always be the case. Everybody’s got glasses on, yes? This game involves a bunch of people wearing glasses and making the whole thing up as we go.
In the end, our beliefs are neither true nor false—they can only be supportive or not supportive of our success and happiness. They can be empowering or non-empowering.
For example, how many times have you heard someone else or even caught yourself saying, “I have to work hard in order to earn a lot.” Not exactly the most motivating thought pattern, is it? While we rarely if ever get anywhere by being lazy, though, there are times when working smarter is better than pushing yourself to the brink of exhaustion.
Some of our beliefs get so iron-clad into our nervous system that they turn into inflexible conclusions about life, especially if they were unconsciously and often accidently imprinted into us as children, when we have far less experience to really draw educated distinctions between a temporary situation and something that seems permanent and irreversible. The problem is that most people never re-examine the map of life that they drew when they were children, or seek to revise it to reflect who they are today and who they want to be tomorrow.
If we’re making this all up as we go anyway, you might as well believe that you will get what you need to meet your goals, or that you will learn how. Then we go from feeling and thinking into doing, making mistakes, making adjustments, getting some successes and confidence, and then repeating the whole thing over and over.
Eventually, we move away from belief into full knowing—the knowing that comes from believing in something more than what may be evident on the surface, and the wisdom that comes from the experience of testing those beliefs in the “real world.”
Careful what you believe: it can do more than start a heated argument. It can stop you in your tracks before you’ve even started your journey.
What belief can you re-examine that is not serving you anymore? What are some new beliefs that you can create that are a better fit for the person you are today? Share them with our community, we want to hear from you!
For Your Freedom,

I totally agree with you, Harv. When I was a child my mother used to say “What would the neighbors say?!” and somehow this impacted my life so much. I carried the “What would people say” with me all my life. I couldn’t even have fun with my kids at the beach because I was so afraid of people’s eyes that I didn’t want to take my t-shirt off and play with my kids in the water.
I used to believe that whatever I say doesn’t matter to other people and at the end they will just laugh so I kept being quiet all my life. I believe that everyone is looking at me and making judgments so it was kinda tiring to walk on the street because I was always checking every single person’s eyes. Because of the law of attraction sometimes there were judgments and laughs but I finally figured out how to overcome that. When I did, life changed totally and I can speak out loud my own opinion.
I know that many people struggle with this kind of problem and many others, especially when it comes to things that we Belive that are real so I wrote a blog post about it sharing my story and a way to overcome it.
Anyway Harv, great article and very empowering. I know it will help many people. SHARED!
Be Great! Be Unstoppable!

Yeah so many people experience that. How can we find ur blog post?
Thank you for this article. I have re-examined my thought processes on sticking with family through thick and thin even though it was a miserable, damaging, emotionally abusive situation. I was taught by my parents through their actions with their own dysfunctional parents to take the abuse and help anyway, no matter the personal cost to yourself. I have taken my own stance and left the situation entirely. I am happier and free now.
Well done – I know it’s hard but I did the same and it’s the best thing I ever did. It takes courage and you are so strong for making that decision
Working on the same thing a lifetime– it’s been especially hard to learn what to think instead of thinking that I am responsible for trying to make that person happier or healthier, which is what my mom left me with.
That was enlightening and helpful Harv. Thanks for that.
I love you, I swear. I think you have an abundance of knowledge and insights that are invaluable to those who want to listen. I like that you have a no nonsense approach. Thank you for being you.
Ps I don’t mean love in any kind of stalker situation. My intention is to thank you, that’s all. Lol
Even being in love with people like Harv is not bad,Wendi. lol☺☺
How zero to multimillionaire
I had the pleasure to attend MMI in Rio last year with Harv on stage, and it was one of that moments in time that change your perception of things, not just about money but everything in life, especially the point of view.
Our beliefs are strong enough to makes decision for us unconsciously, but if we pay the right attention on it we can manage this very well. Since that seminar I turned on my “observer” and I’m always taking care of my decisions, especially the little ones, because this is a daily habit…
I could re-examine personal and professional beliefs. I always believed that other people / things (parents, family, friends, spouse, partners, economy, etc) were responsible for makes us happy or successful which is absolutely not true, because we’re the only one responsible for our happiness, feelings, success and so one. It works for business and money too, we’re capable to do anything but just if we don’t blame others for our “not good” experiences.
Another believe that I used to have is that exists good things and bad things happening to us all the time, but actually this is not true, it’s just our perception of events. Things just happens and we can learn for every experience.
So, I must say that I’m getting better day by day and I’m working it daily basis to create a habit to strengthen new beliefs that will help me to grow personally and professionally.
I wish all the best for you guys!
I’ve always believed that as an introvert, I would never be able to do public speaking or speak my mind out. Well, that’s the typical behavior of an introvert. And I let that belief stay in my mind for decades.
But transformation happened(and is still happening). I’ve hosted corporate events as emcee and even got to writing blogs. Something that is very un-introvert.
Today I refuse to let my education or profession define me. Seeking continuous personal growth is my goal. Getting uncomfortable is the new comfort zone for me.
Highly enlightening and validating!the tricks that the mind do that can confuse the heart – which is pretty much the heart of the matter. when your beliefs resonate with the experience/s you have in your life on any given situation, that becomes your truth, validating your perception which either shrinks you or expands you.that’s why we need guidance so we can better understand the truth of our perception.thanks to you then, and to your wise counsel more power to you and please, keep doing it.i love all the responses to your article and somehow,i find their responses resonating with my own.God bless us all!
Thanks for your article.
Yes beliefs can be understood as strong opinions, but at one level they need to be respected in the same way I respect other’s people options. At other level, these years living in UK I learned thanks to one Chinese friend to weight the problems. I usually listen only credible people or the ones that matter to me. I revised the priorities at this stage of my life. Work, research and insitutional mind still are very important and i wont do anything that damage projects but probably my happiness is my focus now. Happiness understood in a broad sense as i really enjoy doing my research it is one of my hobbies.. but also to have a normal life like other ladies 36 years old. People often said that the bigger the problem is.. i become much stronger.. if it is simple i am bored…not excited… it is like i transform myself when i have to do the things at work… but when i am not working i love simple things … normal aspects of the life.. . This it doesn’t imply i am not ambitious or i dont want promotions … i want but for different areas of my life i set up different goals… work-related goals are relatively easy to implement. .. personal goals are more difficult living in uk for the cultural differences and life-style. ..and the temperature of this country.
believes, wow… i see that almost everything is a belief…. i now that i have to let go limiting beliefs about money and being rich. even though i truly need and want to prosper y struggle a lot with this part of my life. Sometimes I feel I am clear, but then achieving progress financially is always tough for me. I guess I feel kind of guilty since i know there is people that suffer because of being extremely poor in this world. Need to overcome this guiltiness and also the believe of what will my friends say if I become extremely successful ? Any ways they will have an opinion that I can’t control, so what the heck !… still i have to walk the path instead of just talking about it… hope and working hard to make it during the next months…. thanks to all !
Good afternoon Harv,
I know you do not have much time and receives thousands of emails a day from people seeking help and so I will be brief. My name is Gustavo Coelho, I’m 29 years old and live in Brazil, unfortunately I have no money to go to a lecture her, however, managed to buy one of his books “THE SECRET OF THE MILLIONAIRE MIND” is great and has helped me a lot to change my view of life, whether professional or personal, I have read other books too, Napoleon Hill, Murph, etc .. I understood that what I am today, even I who produce through my thoughts and beliefs. I live with my parents and I can not free myself financially, and worse, can not earn $ 10.00 a month. I worked for years in several companies, never stay long, always annoyed me, I was sick enough of it there, and I felt bad, took several certificates, preferred to stay at home doing nothing, until it reached the point of asking demição, I felt that my parents were upset by this, and I was, because I saw my parents early lçevantaem every day paa work and even a little ganhacem were fighters and felt ashamed because it was not like them, had no such determination to get up early and go work, hitting card at the entrance, having lunch break and wait for the end of the day to leave, neck understood why, but not felt good about it at the start up was excited, happy to be over there in search of a better future, a better job, but with time I felt distressed and skirt. So it was for many years in various companies until they decide to work on their own, I thought, if several can be masters of their time, so can I, my family did not like the idea, but did not stop me, even because never been to listen to others about what he wanted to do and once again disappointed me, was not prepared and I lost what I invested, I found that was unruly and began to read aloud help books to try to improve. I feel bad for not having managed to financial results, did not give up and I am now trying to be a professional sports trader, I have no money to invest and do not know what to do, but I will somehow try. The only thing he wanted to help me understand that I feel better is because I can not do things right, because sometimes got lazy, or for some reason I fail to do, I understand that my mind is conditioned to it but I can not change and need urgentimente change that, because my life is falling apart and I feel I’m not doing anything to change, I need to make money. I did not tell what happened to me in detail, it would be very large text and I know do not have time to read, I also know that the chance that no read is great, even because I received several emails a day, but it costs nothing try, since it is my life that is at stake. And as I have no money to pay for a consultation with you and if you come to help me anyway, I agree to after getting earn money, pay for penny aid per cent, as even being a person without money, I value those who help me. Thank you very much.
good that you have the courage to ask but you need to realize that no one is coming to save you. That’s up to you! The more reliance you put on others the less responsibility you take for your life.
You say “I worked for years in several companies, never stay long, always annoyed me”. That’s all on you. Jobs ARE annoying, people ARE annoying. Get over yourself, put in the effort and work your way up OR only leave when you are going to something better.
Staying at home unemployed and asking for handouts is not taking responsibility for your own life.
YOU are your own worst enemy and if you want life to be different then YOU need to change!
I have tried to change my bad beliefs many, many times. I always thought I would make it this time. Now, I am certain I will make it. I am trying to change the belief that earning money has to be hard and that if I get rich I will take money from poor people. I am still learning and growing and this time I will achieve my goals.
Thanks for sharing.
Tove
I recently read a book about “Theory of Knowledge”, where believes and belief systems were discussed. People cling to their believes out of fear, and they will fight to protect them. That’s the mind working. Instead, we should observe the mind and its belief system from a distance, with perspective, and we will see how they disappear.
The best we can have is a model of the world, we know its not the truth (a model is never completely correct), but it can help us understand the real world. The model we build in our minds is constantly changing, and that’s OK. The model has to evolve in order to understand the real world. So, anyone who brings new information about the real world is helpin me build a better model, even if it shatters my previous model, and even if at first it feels horrible, I appreciate it.
The purpose of life is to trascend our level of consciousness, and for that we have to move to a higher plane of understanding the real world, and also the inner world.
I’ve always had a hard time figuring out which advice to follow and where to start looking for that advice, sometimes to the point of feeling stressed out, because it felt forced and I would feel like the advice being given was mediocre and most times I would just choose to stay quiet and not say anything because it’s not like my advice would be any better, or would it? That’s what I would tell myself a lot. Although I hope to reach a point in my life where I am social more often than rarely and a lot more confident when speaking to others. Right now, I don’t see that being the thing I should focus on. I’m glad I came across your new class, everything you said resonated with me to my core. It’s what I’ve been thinking about most of my teen years to today. This ones going to be a good class for me, I can feel it.
Thank you for this wonderful article. I’m on a mission to teach pre-teens and teens about the power of emotional intelligence. A big part of what I teach is to recognize disempowering thoughts and replace them, thus rewiring the brain.
Here’s a blog I wrote which describes a process I use when teaching this concept to youth.

All my best,

Thanks for this enlightening article. We do not think right this is the problem
I think if the thought is repeated continuously in our heads or mind then it becomes a belief. The goal is to constantly repeat the positive thoughts and affirmations and quarantine or wean out the self-defeating ones. Also keeping an open mind helps as we are able to empathise and understand other people’s perceptions and point of view.
rather than chasing web classes online – like this one which I missed again in September, I will be a student to read the 92 pages speedwealth book first.
then, to take a breather and wrap up the lessons – before I plunged into the lessons for 2017.
life has its circumstances and life events happens.
many a times I find that a person can determine the course and outcome some 60% of the time.
the rest is about luck, relationships, circumstances and happenings
so the belief system is shaped from christianity, families, values, fate and results or outcomes of efforts
I believe in right and wrong. I believe in law and police man
