Fear: the Great Paralyzer
When we look at successful people, there are a variety of assumptions we can make for why they are successful. Hard work comes to mind. Smarts never hurt. Maybe they were born with advantages that other people weren’t born with.
But let’s be honest: there are times when you wonder why someone who doesn’t seem terribly bright finds success. “How the hell did they get to where they’re at? I’m smarter than them!” That may or may not be true, but one thing is for sure: however one reaches success—even if intelligence and ability weren’t factors at all—those people aren’t afraid to take action!
It’s Not All About the “Great Idea”
Lots of people have great ideas. Even more may be sharp as pencils. They can know exactly what to do. But what good is all that knowledge, imagination, and information if you’re too scared to do anything about it?
Let’s not give fear too much of a bad rap here. When mankind needed to be hyper-aware of our environment in more primal times, fear was certainly a useful tool for staying alive. We were born with the ability to fear, so like anything else we’re born with, it serves a purpose.
Fortunately, most of us aren’t typically in “fight or flight” situations like our ancestors. Unfortunately, people tend to invoke that same primal instinct about things that have nothing to do with life or death. It just seems like it when a big change or decision is upon us that moves us out of our comfort zones (even when we know financial “comfort” isn’t quite as comfortable as financial freedom).
The Protective Mind Can Hold You Back
It’s that protective mind acting like a helicopter mom, hovering over us as if every move we make will end in disaster. It’s constantly creating doom and gloom scenarios, trying to scare the heck out of us in the hopes that we won’t try anything new. It’s our own protective mind that prevents us from taking the actions necessary to reach our dreams.
When that happens, all of our great ideas are now full of uncertainty and doubt. A lot of people wait for their fear to subside before doing something. Wrong! You don’t have to be fearless in order to act. You acknowledge the fear and act anyway. Fear itself holds no real power over us.
Successful People Have Fear
Successful people have doubts and successful people worry. The only difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is that successful people act regardless of the fear. Even those who don’t have integrity or brains but who act anyway are going to find more success than geniuses with integrity who keep it to themselves because they’re too afraid to put themselves out there.
Habitual fear can be paralyzing. It can trick us into believing that we can’t act, that we shouldn’t act, that acting toward what we really want is going to lead to pain because that’s what we’ve been taught, or because that’s what happened before. You’re never going to be happy or successful if you don’t get beyond fear.
Now it’s your turn: What’s been some of your biggest fears, anxieties and worries that—now that you look back on it—were overblown? What was the result once you got past those fears? Where in your life are you letting fear, doubt or worry stop you from taking the necessary actions for happiness and success? Share here so others can learn from your experiences.
Remember this: Don’t let fear ever paralyze you into inaction. Overcome your fears!

Really like this perspective on fear. It's easy to forget that, as long as we're taking action, the fear is really inconsequential. In fact, if we're not feeling fear on some level, we're probably playing it too safe and not moving forward on making our dreams come true.
Life coach Cheryl Richardson says that, when we're afraid, we need friends (a support system), facts (more information), and faith.
Boy thanks for that, sometimes the truth hurts but only for a little while, so its about examining what am I doing today towards my own goals and dreams!
My FEARS started, “what if” in the elementary grades and has subsided within a part of the brain that listens to people that had the fears before i. It was when i become a little rebelious and found the guts to challege my fears and found the people that said something about fear really didn't know how to conquer their fears, when i realized what i feared and challenged, i realized my fears were not fears of mine.
When I was single I was afraid to do much of any kind of traveling or really anything that was considered independent. I'm married now and have done some businesses that made me see that I am not afraid of doing more, so now I am still married to a person that has all those fears still and I love so very much my fear is doing something that will make her want to leave.
Yes Connie, I like that. When we are afraid sometimes all it means is that we don't know enough about the situation we're facing or we haven't investigated possible solutions that could help us. Also a good support system made of people who've already overcome what we're facing (or simply people who care about us and have faith in us) is key. And lastly, even if those aren't available to us… faith is essential. In ourselves, in the process and in the outcome of our actions, which can then lead to confidence. I am facing some pretty intense situations right now (financially) but I now I have chosen to move along this path and follow my dreams, not just 'in my head' but in practical terms as well. It feels scary at times but it also feels like I am an adult taking charge of my life and that's invaluable.
The ancronym for FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real
Bravo Harv!
This couldn't have come at a better time.
Best,

Great post thanks T. Harv
I saw neale walsh's acronym already for fear which i love, here is another one by mike dooley i just recently read
Failing to Experience the Actual Reality before you.
Great stuff…feel the fear and do it anyways!
I am at a very important crossroad in my life right now and I so needed to read this today.
Thanks for posting this.
Warmly,
Lauren
Connie, I concur very much with your answer. I am going through fear right now and my business is not growing because of it. I know without a shadow of a doubt, that I need friends and a support system to walk with me as we both trod the same path and that will be a great motivation for me
Preacher remark: Hell is not realizing what we did wrong, but what we 'didn't' do. I am feeling great pressure to do something that I can and must do, but if I fail, it would be costly. So I calculate probability; but the probabilities of success are whittling down my excuse to not act. If I can minimize risk, I think I will go for it.
It is great post. As Napoleon Hill wrote in his book “Think And Grow Rich”, we hold six fears inside and the management of those fears is an indicator how far we can go in our lives. In some level fear is good, but we must learn to face the fear and do it every time it appears.
Really great points in this blog post. How we react to the “fears” that are bestowed upon us will determine how we succeed in life. Someone once told me all FEAR was nothing but “False-Expectations-Appearing-Real”. Putting oneself in “Action” mode will definitely remove most of those fears.
Excellent insights on fear. As I look back on my personal and professional life, it was during the times I was most afraid to fail I did an incredible job of manifesting failure.
It was when I was willing to learn what those who were succeeding actually did (mostly with beliefs and mindset) my life began to change.
One of the most important things I “got” is that with risk comes reward. And fear is often False Evidence Appearing Real.
More times than not we build up a situation in our mind that is so far removed from the truth of a situation that if we were simply to step back and view it from an “outsiders” perspective we likely would not have fear.
Another important insight I gained is, “If my palms aren't sweating, I'm not playing big enough.”
It isn't about whether you have fear or not. Fear is something we all share. The difference between success and mediocrity is about the actions you take when feeling fear.
I know fear of public speaking held me back for many years. There were plenty of excuses for staying in my office and letting someone else do the networking.
Once I became compelled to expand my business, my mindset changed. I embraced the motto “if it is uncomfortable, than I ought to be doing it.” That was life changing. As a result, what was once difficult is now easy. Fortunately for all of us, change can happen.

I am encountering fear over the dreams I want to achieve. I am thinking, I am never gonna make it. And it is true…it is making me lazy to do things. Instead of going for it, I'd rather want to give it up and start another thing. This is a good post…reminds me to just go on…work my fear towards my faith…that I can do it.
Thank you, Harv!
Recently I have some questions in my mind, and I want to ask someone is really successful.
Therefore, I want to ask you that how do I know which one investment that is right to myself. And how do I hit the road?
As a child I lived with a lot of danger. Harv, I think there are many people in the developed world who do live a fight or flight existence. An unfortunate number of them are children.
From early on I refused to be a victim, but as children do, I put together some pretty unusual coping strategies. The mix I came up with allowed me to continue as a victim in certain areas and to be a warrior in others. I don't think this is unusual.
It is that mix that has me writing a blog called https://ImaginingBetter.com. Like you, and to some degree, because of you, I believe it begins in our minds, in our imaginations, and with our beliefs.
I believe I'll take some action. 😉 (The next action involves working with my son to offer increased participation in the parent education & kid betterness section of the website. Great fun & deeply meaningful work!)
Absolutely true. Since I am able to act and follow my instincts despite fear – and I speak here of the stomach clutching fear, that brings you to your knees – the big wonder Harv teaches and tells us over and over again happens, I advance beyond my dreams… and I start to dream bigger and bigger!
My thanks, Harv, for having stepped in my life, for having changed me!
With successful wishes from Switzerland

I have this continuously exploding bomb that sits at my elbow called 'Secrets Of The Millionaire Mind'.
I refer to it most days. In particular, your statement: “Give me five minutes and I can predict your financial future for the rest of your life” is a constantly motivating inducement not to back slide!
New book soon? You'll be hard pressed to top 'Millionaire Mind' 🙂

Your post came at the right time Harv!
Been following your workshops in Singapore and have a copy of your book on my working desk.
Just today, the FEAR came to me, when i realised that something special (innovative) i would like do on a major scale in the very near future has been done by other players in the market. I was despair when i saw the papers today and had been thinking of how to compete if i am slower than others.
After reading through your post, i am enlightened and realised i will need to overcome this fear, and regroup to plan what's my next move – do i do something similar and better (bigger) or i do something differently?! I think i will get the answer soon, since i am ready to face up to FEAR and overcome it whatever directions i am gong to take.
Thanks Harv,
Please keep sharing to benefit the universe =)

Absolutely Agree. That's Why I'm a Quantum Leaper…
This is why I'm a Quantum Leaper…
When I was trying out for a musical my freshman year of Highschool, I was told by the Director that the best I could ever do was to be on stage crew because I “had no stage presence.” That stayed with me for years and it took me out of the game of being the best public speaker I could be…until I joined San jose Toastmasters when I was 25. In other words, I was living in fear for about 11 years and not realizing my potential! Thanks to all the work I've been doing on myself, I am no longer afraid to step out of my comfort zone and strive for mastery (in face of all my fears and looking stupid). Looking back, maybe my Director was right and maybe she wasn't (it really doesn't matter) — what matters is that I sure could have gotten a lot farther faster, if I didn't let fear stop me from playing the game for 11 years…My takeaway is that I am committed to still listening to people constructive feedback along the way, but just because I'm not where I want to be isn't a reason for me to stop… au contraire, it's a reason to start playing harder!
I act in spite of fear. I love embracing fear and taking action anyway. Its a mental toughness that you have to grow into. And you can only grow into it by doing it.
Like Susan Jeffers said 'feel the fear and do it anyway' life
Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain – live life on your terms
Is it Fear…or Procrastination?
There's a quote : “Today is that *tomorrow* you were afraid of, yesterday”. Thank you T Harv , thank you Connie for sharing your advice, I realli liked the three “F”s
