The Business of Life
It’s human nature to separate our lives into parts for convenience sake, so there’s a difference between work and family, for example. But sometimes these distinctions disrupt what would otherwise be an integral unity. Treating employees like family can go a long way toward your bottom line through their loyal, caring and purposeful efforts.
Values and principles aren’t okay over here in our family lives or relationships, yet we can drop them over there in business. No, we’re either going to be what we intend to be throughout all facets of our lives, or we’re not.
If the same concepts apply, why separate the basic elements of business as if they were these pieces that fit into the puzzle of our lives when we could equally consider life as a business itself?
In the market, value is determined by the benefit of something minus its cost, yes? These same principles apply to any part of our lives, from what we put into our bodies to the peer groups we choose. It’s not cold to think of life in business terms. The human element is that values, benefits and costs are unique to each of us, and thereby unquantifiable. That’s what makes each life—and business—unique with its own unique value to give.
The three elements to business success are:
- You have to have the right vehicle.
- You have to have the right knowledge.
- And you’ve got to be the right, true YOU!
If you don’t have the right vehicle are you going to make it? If you don’t have the right knowledge of how to use that vehicle, are you going to make it? If you don’t know who you are—your habits, your traits, your own strength—are you going to make it?
We don’t literally live our lives in vehicles all the time, but are you located where you need to be? If someone wanted to pursue acting and become a big star, Wyoming wouldn’t be the best place to pursue work. Yes, or yes? Also, having the right knowledge and knowing who you are go hand in hand if we were to think of successful lives as we think of successful businesses.
Your livelihood is not solely measured in your bank statements. It’s living life without doubt. It’s doing and being who you are and taking in everything that comes at you—the good, the bad and the ugly— knowing that you’re going to keep moving forward and succeeding again no matter what.
Right livelihood is a Buddhist principle, probably among other spiritual disciplines too. It’s not about how much money you make. That’s a part of it, but that will be a result of finding the right livelihood. It’s about matching what you do with who you are.
Let’s have some fun with this concept. If you were to think of your life as a business, what would you call it? Why? Does your name tie into the core of who you are or what value you have to give? We’re looking forward to some fun, creative responses. Post below!

I'd call the business of my life Adventures in Transformation because life is all about change. Change is inevitable and when we resist change it brings hardship. When we embrace change life becomes a fun adventure. I'm an expert at helping people navigate through change — to transform their thoughts, beliefs and behaviors to be the person they want to be, living a life that is authentic to them. Aho!
If your life was a business would you get fired from it? Having your work and life in contradiction is a recipe for discontentment. Get past “I have to pay the bills” to “How do I find something I enjoy that adds values to others?”

How can I help?
Excellent Post! You have described my perfect example for the Conscious Business person
“In-The-Flow” is the “place” to be for life, business and all other things. It's where I want to be. It's who I am. It's what I do!!
Thank you Harv. You're a true gift to The Universe!!
i like change so it will always be the thing to do again tomorrow. yeah!
Harv,
I love your concept as it is one i have based my own life on. To be 100% honest I did name my business as per my own life- Reclaim Personal Development….
I love this article, Harv. Thank you! I am a passionate parent of two pre-teens. I am constantly looking for ways in which I can serve my kids better. I read books, listen to experts, go to trainings (Peaks Trainings have helped me a LOT in being a better parent!). And guess what? My business is helping other parents support their kids in leading extraordinary lives – good or good? Thank you for sharing your gift, and thanks to all Peak Potentials staff and volunteers – I love you all!
Your blog posts are amazing. I am interested in hearing what you would have to say about whether your name ties into the core of who you are. That's an interesting question.
I love this post Harv! Thank you for putting all this effort in posting all these messages and reminding us the true essence of life, business, play, creativity and being the true you. When things are not going well… I will pause and ask myself “How can I add more value to the people around me… how can I make you smile today? 🙂
My spirituality and philosophy are that if I'm having fun, making others' lives easier, funner, funnier, lighter, helping them learn in a fun, easy way, creating bonds, spreading love … well those days, I feel great! And I'm glad to say that these thoughts are becoming a majority of every minute of my day 🙂 Eva
This is great!! I have definitely been one who divides life and business. I run an elearning business, and while I work from my home office quite frequently, I definitely struggle to maintain some level of “separateness”. Maybe I need to change my view on this and just consider it all one with different moving parts :-). This was a great perspective post 🙂 Thanks Harv.
I did name my business after the way I lead my life. I named my catering business, Raven's Surprise”. Because I seasonally change the baked goods that I offer, due to fruit availability, etc..I think that change is a good thing and keeps it all interesting. The Raven's that fed the biblical prophet Elijah, brought him food from afar (outside of the famine territory), it was good, and it was always a surprise to him what he got. I love my life!
It doesn't really edify people to tell them a million times that they 'aren't going to make'. You say that way too often. The edifying parts of your messages are always so good. The rest is really hard on people.
Hello harv! The your book''The Secrets of a millionaire mind''has changed a lot in my way of penssar with respect to money and many other. Perhapsif I had not known this book, even though I'm trying to max, my mental programming would never let me achieve my real goal. MY ROOTS and sister asked Imprest just reading only one part. so I decided to read
.Today I decided I am a more motivated and strap that quero.Earned harv!!
harv won! I'm from Brazil and I'm already connected …''
Love the post! It's all about being truly in alignment. Beyond the income, is fulfillment… and that only happens on a deep level when who you are and what you do are aligned. Nice post. PS – Great to work with you today in SD.
I like the story in Pushing Daisies!
Parents need to stop being “their own parent” to their child and learn to LISTEN more instead of “I'm telling you” and “I told you so!”.
Parents also need to appreciate their child/ children in the true sense of the word instead of trying to live vicariously through them. Instead of asking our kids to “be better than I was” and “get better at what you're doing” all we need to be is a model for them.
OK…let's have some fun with a play of imagination and words with “If my life were a business…….”. – I would call my life so many things! Which sort of reflects the fact that my mind is too psychedelic or I can't focus or, WHY NOT BOTH! lol……….
If my life were a business : “Synergy Dynamics” (but I would sound like a green energy company, hahaha.) – Why? Because I think people ARE intelligent but they walk around with so much self-doubt that they develop myopia to the strings of information, clues they simply needed to weave together into one dynamic, synergistic momentum to fuel them – yeah, Energy!
Or maybe, “One Tree Hill” – as I sit under a tree on a hill, sipping oolong and green cha and having Zen moments expounding philosophies in sonnets and haikus to clarify people's doubts and bring forward their “epiphanous” moments.
Your post reminds me of a man I have recently come to admire very much – General Cao Cao of the Han Dynasty. Ignoring fiction, historical records show that he is truly a man who is ONE' as a general, a scholar, an artist, a lover, a father, a warrior. He is, to me, the personification of the themes that moved me about the Bhagavad Gita, ThickFace Black Heart and the Buddhist way of “Mindful Living”.
Great content! I would classify my life as “Care and Nurture”
I just bought 3 Paulo Coelho books today after only discovering his works the day before. Perhaps I needed to truly ask myself what is my personal legend so I can, as you said, live life without doubt and matching what I do with who I am.
Have you read him?
It's like finding your purpose in life and doing it in all aspects of your endeavor… surely will make us happy… I certainly agree! Keep it coming T. Harv… God bless you more!
If my life was a business I would call it “Leaving a Legacy” because I am 100% committed to making a real difference with people across the board in my life (whether it be in business, community, or personal relationships) AND having the difference sustained. I am also intent on helping other people figure out what legacy they want to leave holistically and find a vehicle to make it happen through being the best in their careers.
lol! Brilliant.
Mine would have to be 'Being Inc' because the dimension of Being is the fundamental space in which all the 'things' of life take place, and our very existence is all we ever really have to offer.
Is that a practical level to do business from ? I don't know, but I intend to find out…
I am very confused! I am from Portugal and I am reading your book “millionaire mind” and I came across a great problem.Have two companies, a tire and a construction company.Since 3 years i went to tire company because it had finished the University(economy) and had to get someone to boost the company the same, in three years the company double the sells, but I understand I will not be financially free to work in the tire company, which on the other hand, the company of construction (where are my brothers) the thing is different and there really sees money!
But, on the one hand, I like my job coe in tires company but i`am enticed by the money generated in the company of construction! What do I do?:)
If my life were a business I would call it “Potential Unlimited”. I am in a job that I don't love and I've used the mortgage excuse for giving up my passion. It is time to take action.
