It’s a Zen Thing, Baby
Last week we took a look at the power of positive focus. So easy to know, yes? Yet most people do the opposite—they focus on the negative. We’ve done it too, so we can’t be too hard on anyone. But we can’t just let this slip into one of those concepts we take for granted, either. This is extremely important.
It’s one of the greatest secrets to both happiness and success. You’ve heard it 100 times; you just have to do it. If you have to read it a thousand times a day as a reminder, so be it. Eventually it’s got to get into you naturally and effortlessly.
Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.
Most people spend most of their day thinking about, talking about, and being about what they don’t want. ‘I don’t like this. This isn’t going right. This is a problem.’ Well, guess what? You just got more of it. What you focus on expands! Your attention has created your reality. Reality really is what you make it.
If you want more money, don’t focus on what you don’t have because that gives you that focus on the lack in your life. That’s a lack of consciousness, and you get more lack. Focus on earning and accumulating more money for your reason. If you want to create a great new business opportunity, don’t focus on how much you hate what you’re doing now. Focus on discovering a great opportunity. Focus on the solution.
Remember, I’m talking about positive focus, not positive thinking. What’s the difference?
Positive thinking doesn’t acknowledge “negative” reality. It kind of glosses over things. You can focus on finding more opportunities to make more money, but that doesn’t change the fact that you have to eat now. You don’t change a car accident by thinking, “If I drive away, maybe nobody will notice.” Positive thinking doesn’t always account for personal responsibility.
Positive focus means looking at the now, getting the most out of now, which will affect a later future. It acknowledges the law of duality; that there must be both a positive and a negative side to everything.
Then we are just being aware that we simply are choosing to put our attention on and accentuate the positive because we know that’s what will expand for us. We know that’s what supports us; we know that’s what will make for a happier, more successful life.
It’s a Zen difference—knowing that as we paint it, we make it something, and it’s going to be empowering for us to think and focus on the positive. That’s why we do it, not because it’s true! The positive and the negative are both true!
We choose our thoughts not based on true or false. We choose them based on whether they support us or not. The mind is limited in its conscious attention. You can only entertain one thought at a time. Make sure it’s got a positive focus.
What do you think? What are your thoughts on the differences between positive thinking and positive focus? Are there any times when “positive thinking” is appropriate? We want to hear from you on this Zen-logical mind-twister!

Great distinction! Positive thinking is empty, while positive focus is brimming with potential for an emergent reality of our own making.
I get frustrated at people that say they are just being realists when they are really being negative. These are the same people that say us positive thinkers are not seeing reality. I disagree, we see reality as clear as anyone else. We just choose to approach reality differently. I think the difference is that we always think we have options, I have not been proven wrong yet.
To stay positive in a negative situation I always ask myself “what have I learned from this situation”

Harv, You've just wrote down so clearly what I was trying to explain to my girlfriend a few minutes ago 🙂 The whole positive thinking is so magnificent! We both love your book and your blog and thank you for sharing your positive toughts with us.
By the way, when will you come to Hungary? 🙂
Thanks ,

At this moment I noticed the positive thinking and positive focus differences that I never thoughts before,It's make me sure what I wanna do and what I don't wanna do.Thaks Harv.
This is a great post! It's also very challenging.
I know from my own experience that maintaining a *positive focus* was very hard to do 24/7.
In the past, I'd find myself *loosing it* over trivial matters…then I discovered the reset button.
To hit the reset button:
2-3 times a day I just stop what I'm doing
and for just 2-3 minutes I close my eyes, take 3 deep breaths
and empty my mind of all the *noise*.
I think our minds get full of a lot of noise throughout the day and it distracts us from what's truly important.
By just stopping and hitting the reset button you will refocus your energy. For me, It was hard to do at first, but practice makes it easier.
These day I find it much easier to maintain a positive focus and a happier life.
Thanks for the reminder!!
Positive “thoughts” can be about anything, i.e., something beautiful, something funny, something kind and loving, plenty of money, but these “thoughts” don't really get us anywhere, except that they may direct us toward a positive “focus” to obtain these things. On the other hand, positive “focus” is what gets us there. Positive “focus” directs us to the divine ideas and inspiration that provide a means to obtain the positive “things” that we “think” about. Positive “focus” must involve acknowledging the negative, but only as a way to focus on solutions to navigate around, over, or through the negatives. And sometimes positive “focus” can bring us ideas where we can capitalize on the momentum from the “negatives”, like a springboard, to catapult us to achieving the positive “things” we “think” about.
I always think there is a positive side in ANY situation. Howelse would you learn from it?
The positive thinking and the positive focus are new for me. I always try to stay on the positive thinking, trying to avoid the negative thinking. Yet, I must not forget the negative is also there. Everything is a matter of perspective.
So here is my question: when being in a whole….what could be a good example of positive thinking AND positive focus?
This takes practice and getting used to.
Hey Gorgeous, what a beautiful way to put it, thanks sooo much, Stay Special
I just love your Blogs Harv. You are the BEST Teacher..Keep them coming..

OMG! I have always had positive “thinking” but rarely positve FOCUS! thanks for pointing out the difference!
Great post! One can embrace positive thinking and positive focus. One can think and one can focus. Mental Martial arts tell us to be aware of our environments. Most environments have positive and negative energy to some degree. We ovrcome the negative by maintaining a positive state. The people around you will even vibe with your positive energy or move away from you (if they are negative) at the least the negativity will not penetrate your positive shield. This takes thought and focus. Positive!
Positive focus is the best way to live. It will not only help attract what you want, it will also make you healthier.
Positive thinking would be putting a positive spin on a negative situation. Positive focus would be focusing your energies to turn that bad situation into a good situation. Thinking is only thinking. Focusing is doing.
It is very well written and totally agreed.
Positive thinking is important getting us toward the right direction in life. It is light in the darkness…
But we need to maintain observation and focus on negative issues around the world. This is where we need to improve and the opportunity in the negativity such as crisis. While positive focus is important, negative focus with a great purpose to improve it change the world. It is finding darkness and shine it all for others…

To me, positive thinking is actually FOCUSING on a dersirable outcome no matter what the current situation is. It is a state of understanding that you can reach point B no matter what point A is.
The ONLY negative about positive thinking is if, for some reason, you neglect to take the positive ACTION your positive thinking suggested.
Thank's Joe, you really made it clear for me how to maintain the positive focus.
And thanks to Harv as well of course for this great post again 😉
empty the mind of all the noise and focus on all the great things I have and will have.
“Nothing bad ever happens, in the end it serves I higher meaning.”
I now know that thoughts are REAL forces. Unfortunatly thinking is not just thinking. It's real energy that is sent out to THE universe and will cause something.. No mather what. So positive thinking is a lot better than negative thinking which we all do all the time. But, positive focus is thinking with a goal. You see what you want as if it is allready hapening to you.
And that stuff is powerfull! Just thinking positive without à goal for me is just daydreaming. But still much better than negative thinking..

Our lives are determined by the way we view our world.
We have a range of emotions to choose from – acknowledge those feelings, and then move on to your solutions to bring about the life you want to lead.
I love your differentiation between positive thinking and positive focus. Personal responsibility and action – just wonderful words
I think focusing on the positive is everything, and I can't be reminded enough to do this, because I want it to turn into a lifetime habit that I can model to other people.
From my experience, focusing on problems makes me feel even more cemented in them. On the other hand, talking about the solution – as in, this is where we are realistically; where do we go from here –is the key to making forward process. Even if it's just the smallest step, it pulls me out of whatever was pulling me down.
I also share this positive-focus mentality with anyone career seeker I coach, because the only way to take control of your career is by being able to see past your next paycheck down the road to being the best you can be in your field!
To your career success!

Thank you for this article, Harv!
As a person who has been interested in spirituality for over 30 years, I was slow to realize that achieving success and creating wealth also further spiritual development in amazing ways.
I also want to thank you for the great talk at the Experts Academy this weekend. It really changed my life!
I look forward to learning more!

My thoughts are whoever's doing your blog for you or yourself did not just cut and paste this time, but did spend sometime reading them through to make sure they blend and make some sense. Still a little choppy though.
