Discover Why These 3 Sneaky Enemies Could Be Blocking You From Living Your True Purpose

A huge part of the reason why I first began teaching was that I like to help people out, but I was also attempting to earn a decent living, do well financially, be successful and productive, etc.
Soon, I found though that what really gave me juice about being successful at teaching was when I noticed that I had an effect on people.
I began to notice that people would tell me that their lives were changing based on stuff I would teach them. Teaching became a little bit more about being in service than being financially successful, which of course is still important, but it was secondary. I think of success far differently now than what I thought it was 20 years ago.
When people say “success” they usually mean achievement, yes? To “be” successful is to have enough money to do what you want (achieving freedom); be good at something and recognized for it (achieving significance); enjoy relationships, have a family (achieving emotional happiness and stability); do good and be respected in your community, etc., right?
Here’s the thing: I’m not saying all these things aren’t great, but they aren’t the true measures of success. My definition of success is quite simple: living your purpose.
Are you living your purpose? Do you even know what your purpose is?
All those other things we typically associate with success aren’t so much “successes” to attain as much as they are gifts that make us feel rather comfortable and happier. We do what we need to do to “get” what we want, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but my only concern is whether or not the “attainment” of these “successes” (i.e. desires that, sometimes, are not coming from our higher selves) is taking us away from living our purpose.
Some people’s purpose isn’t going to materialize in comfort and relationships, big houses and stuff. Some people’s purpose is to lead others through sacrifice of such things, shaping the world beyond what they actually get to see in their lives. You can think of a few spiritual teachers who fit this bill, yes?
For me, I know my purpose has been and will continue to be helping people through information, education, and inspiration to really live from courage, purpose and joy vs. fear, need and obligation. I do think that for most of us, we can live our purpose and enjoy the gifts, i.e. the “successes” that come with it.
I don’t believe any one person’s dharma (think of it as a life duty we’re born into) is more or less significant than another’s; they’re just different levels of intensification and vibration each of us puts out into the world.
I believe that when we are living our purpose–in truth and sincerity–we are just living out what was intended for all of us to be.
So I ask again…are you living your life’s purpose? Do you even know what it is?
If you don’t…well, first of all, you actually do. How do I know this? Because only you can know it! Nobody can tell you what that is; you have to figure it out for yourself.
However, I offer some advice for those whose purpose is still unclear to them. Recognize the three enemies that keep you from living your purpose: living from fear, living from need, and living from obligation.
I guarantee that as you really look at what it is you do in life, you will be blown away by what you observe. For most people, 90% of the time they’re living in fear, need, or obligation.
“Well I have to do this (stay at a crappy job, for example).”
“Why?”
“I have to do it because (fill-in-the-blank).”
Those take you out of your higher self. They take you out of your zone. They take you out of your happiness. As real as those reasons may be, you won’t be looking for a solution if you stay attached to fear, need, or obligation.
So, how have fear, need and obligation affected you and your life’s purpose? What insights have you gleamed along the way? What is your mission, anyway?

I understand this point…I just don’t know how to move out of the fear and obligation into my destiny. There are steps to this and going about this in a realistic route leaves me with more questions. Being a very spiritual person, this point is very true!
Just saw movie the shiftwayne dyer. He says exactly the same.
I love your definition of success!
(ie. “living your purpose”)
I used to compare myself to others with regards to financial success or fame. For many years I’ve been thinking that my daddy is disappointed that I wasn’t that successful. He achieved a lot in his life. One day I burst into tears and told him how I felt, he said “My child, I’ve never thought this way, I only want you to be happy, it’s my only concern”
After many years of struggling with wounds of the past and trying to make a music career I came to the point where I simply started to accept how I feel and who I am. It’s a great relief, the greatest gift I could give to myself.
And from this point I want to take a next step and see what my purpose is….
Dear Harv!
Since my teenge I am looking to find out what my life purpose is. Now I’m 51 years old.
I searched in every way I could think of, have been reading, talking with all kinds of people about it, thinking a great deal of time about and yet did not discover it.
Yes! I can imagine how much easier would bee to know for sure. And it can’t be something you just make up. Most of my life I’ve been craving for!
That is exactly the problem that most people have, including myself. I am even older than you and have not found it yet. Maybe we should let go of the idea that we need a specific, very wel defined, life purpose and accept that there are people that do not have a clear purpose, or that have more than one, see https://www.supersoul.tv/supersoul-sessions/elizabeth-gilbert-flight-hummingbird-curiosity. That ended my frustration about not being able to find my one and single passion. I like a lot of things and have accepted that.
I have spent most of my life living from obligation as a result of family, marital breakdowns, debt and ailing parents. It has been and continues to be a very hard transition to living my life on my terms and not in fear or need as I have experienced being terribly broke and living day to day and not having the confidence to speak out when things are bad. Thank you for sharing and helping me on this journey to becoming the independent passionate person I really want and need to be.
My life purpose is to spread the Gospel and bring more people into the kingdom of God. Anything else belongs to this world.
who is this god you speak of
I believe your purpose is to be joyful. Find what brings joy to your life, and you find your purpose. For me that is nurturing and teaching. I find great joy in helping others and in teaching. So, just ask yourself, ” What brings me joy?” and in your answer you will find your purpose. Love and peace to all. Namaste
Thank you! I already know what keeps me from my purpose. Be real. You say you love to teach, then teach me the tools needed to get out of what keeps me from my purpose, not rehash what is in plain sight.
Living out of purpose, clarity and believe then as the opposite to fear, obligation and need?
I still have fear and need to overcome childhood traumas. But i want to shift and live my purpose, but i have so much illness, anxiety and now neck hernia that everytime i go one step forward i go 3 steps backwards. At the end i am where i was years ago when i begun. I am busy to reprogram my paradigma but iam at the same level as 20 years ago. How further?
Hi. Our traumas are still here today. This issues you have to handle are the same if you cant overcome. If you are to much busy to reprogram from childhood that is to say you run away. There is no many to do in life as being in service but nothing much effective as observe your bahaviors and thoughts understanding finally. And sometimes people need fears and needs and this dramas from obligations because without this ilusions we could not play the game. Thanks. A. 🙂
Harv, this is another great insight and very well articulated!
I believe what is being shared here should resonate well with majority of us who are just ‘existing’ instead of living life. Life is actually a simple journey made complicated!
It is the system in place in society that has automatically conditioned us into living a life filled with fear, needs and obligations.
I am so glad that there are great people like Harv who are helping so many of us find ourselves and our purpose.
I myself have only discovered my true self recently and have been and still am making daily concerted efforts to break away from all these three ‘sneaky enemies’ to fulfil my true purpose.
Now that i have found my vehicle and moving at a good pace, my main challenge now is to continue to ‘reprogram’ and become the ‘new me ‘ so that i can fulfil my true purpose!
Thank you Harv for all your great work. You are a true inspiration!
Wished i have met you much earlier!
This is how you change from fear, need, and obligation to courage, purpose, and joy. Your first step is awareness. Monitor your thoughts and observe how you speak to yourself. You’ll be surprised! Chances are, you would never treat a friend this way. Start becoming your own best friend and turn every thought into an empowering one. Once you change the way you think, you’ll reprogram your brain to focus on positive things. As you do so, you’ll start noticing more and more good things in your life. This leads to the attitude of gratitude, which in turn leads to happiness and fulfillment. Check out a little book called ‘Survive Life and Live It Up!’ It has some great exercises to help with the transformation. Good luck!
Thank you Annette for your sharing. You are most helpful!

My purpose in life is to help people grow and perform their best through health fitness and nutrition and by helping them to set and achieve goals for a better future and balance in work and life! Ivan The Captain
The hardest to believe by common folks was to hear a highly qualified professional who run out of money due to some reasons yet this is possible because it happen to one of my friend who was a Construction Manager. Can you imagine that he have gone broke to the last centavos? People won’t believe a guy like him if you look at him by his qualification and he come to you to ask for help. The only way for you to believe was if you have been dead broke also before.
Yup, I live in all three, fear, obligation and need .
But the obligation , is why I need , and the fear comes
from being afraid of not being able to meet those
obligations .
Let those go! Start using positive affirmations to retrain the way you see yourself, your situation and your world!
I know my purpose but find it difficult to use it to generate a living. I share information for free always. I am called to develop people. I do training facilitation and end up sharing some pertinent info during my facilitation, which at times I feel people need to pay for. In South Africa people do not like paying for information. I am generalising!
