Here’s the Real Reason Why One Millionaire Gave Away His Fortune
One of my blog readers recently posted an article about a wealthy Austrian businessman who is in the process of giving away his amassed fortune and retreating “to a small wooden hut in the mountains or a simple bedsit [in Austria].”
“Money is counterproductive—it prevents happiness to come,” said Mr. Rabeder, who sold interior furnishings and accessories. “For a long time I believed that more wealth and luxury automatically meant more happiness.”
Most people understand this concept, yes? The idea that “money isn’t everything?” Unfortunately, most people aren’t in the position to know for themselves because they aren’t rich. It’s unfair for a wealthy person to advise someone who is struggling financially that “money isn’t everything.” That line doesn’t work when mortgage is due.
Mr. Rabeder, much to his credit though, says at the end of the article that he does not judge those who choose to keep their riches, and that he was following the advice of his own heart and soul. He also confesses in the article that he came from a poor family “where the rules were to work more to achieve more material things, and I applied this for many years.”
Quick, what’s the magic “B” word? Blueprint!
His blueprint said that he had to toil his life away in order to get more. But shouldn’t it be the opposite; you get rich so that you don’t have to work hard? And didn’t he accomplish just that?
Whether people choose to “be comfortable” or be rich, there’s always room for regrets, regardless if you made a lot of money or not. So it’s not about the money; it’s about us. It’s about our money blueprint.
Does building wealth mean you have to be miserable? Of course not!
Becoming rich does involve making changes, which can sometimes seem like work. Changes in your thoughts, habits, and actions bring measurable results. You can measure happiness as surely as you can measure your idea of wealth. Are you enjoying life? Are you becoming more of the person you want to be? Do you feel like you’re wasting time, spending time, or rather taking time, and having time?
These things matter, but neither side of life has to suffer in the process. If your money blueprint involves misery, what else will the outcome be? From a happy millionaire’s point of view, I can only offer that it does not have to be this way.
Quite frankly, how happy can anyone be when they’re constantly anxious about finances? There’s no way to be worry-free about money without being financially free: getting out of debt and staying out of debt with income that out-paces living expenses and materials wants.
Happy rich people build money machines that require less personal investment of time and energy, making money while they do what they want to do, give who they want to give to, and enjoy whatever comforts they choose.
Building wealth does not have to turn into greed, selfishness, or out-of-control materialism. These are choices people make based on their individual blueprints. Money does not have to rule our lives, but it doesn’t have to fall by the wayside either. We can grow emotionally, spiritually and financially while defining our ideas of happiness.
As I’ve said from the beginning, don’t believe a word I say.
Find out for yourself.

Most people have a desire to become wealthy, however when they encounter obstacles, minor defeats and circumstances, the desire lessen to comfortable. I have many friends who are “comfortable” and are happy because there is no sense in being miserable. They have accepted that “this is it” and have conditioned their mind to be happy. As I continue on the road to wealth they remind me that they tried and failed and I should be content with what I have. I hear regrets when they are unable to do some things others who have more do and this is one reason why I continue to achieve, so that I have no regrets for not trying.
Thank you Harv. We need more wealth people to help and inspire others.

Dear Harv,
I heard that poverty is a disease because it is dis-ease and discomfort. It is not natural phenomenon. The true happiness is becoming a whole person spiritually, mentally, physically, and financially. Thank you for being you and your inspiration! I do know that I am happier with financial abundance because then I can truly live rich life in every area of my life and I can spread and share my joy and abundance with people!
It's a shame he didn't realise that he could have it all, but hopefully he improved the life of many others in the process. Great post Harv! Thank you!
Riches would be nice but no debt would be nicer. That's great that Mr. Rabeder can give his wealth away. Chances are he's giving away wealth after bills are paid. He has no debt living megerly. I could handle that!
It sounds like he never grew enough as a 'container,' and so the millions probably constantly made him uncomfortable. He could never let go and expand himself beyond his blueprint. I am skeptical whether the wooden hut will prove deeply satisfying for long, either. When you let outer conditions define your inner peace, whether that's money or no money, it's always going to be a matter of trying to change conditions to find that peace.
If only everyone could understand THIS great wisdom Harv!
Let's find the way to be content where ever we are on the wealth spectrum!
Working Hard and Enjoying my wealth!

i thought that it was too bad Mr. Rabeder gave away all his money. Giving away money is great, but all of it is not. He should reset his blueprint to remain wealthy, become more spiritual, AND give away money. Best of all worlds!
Back in the “day” when I was the Performer (musician) AND doing OK, things were good. Connected Body, Mind, Heart, Soul, Spirit, etc.
Then along came 'wife', time to settle down, stop the moving around, etc. Family implies roots, community, etc. for Mountain People. Even though we're on some opposite end of the spectrum, work was what we did to “get through the day”, so to speak and “poverty” wasn't part of the discussion, but IF you know Mountain People, they have things they do like Sunday-go-to-meeting, Friday Night Stomps in the barn, etc.
It wasn't that MONEY was evil (even though sometimes the presence of it, brought on some fairly evil behaviors) but it was something you kept around to Fix things after the Storms of Life blew over.
That era came and went and now we're faced with a different reality where we've Individualized mostly everything we DO in our lives and Community has taken a “back seat” to a lot of the adventures in Life.
The only reference I'll load in to this conversation from one of the elders in the Green Band vDY(venerable Dhyani Ywahoo) is this simple thought: As long as we are attentive and not reacting to the thought form of limitation, whatever we are doing is sacred.
You'll begin to understand why the Cherokee (tsa-la-gi) in me has never left me, nor my family. They still to this day, communicate with the Universal Language and are always communicating Heart-to-Heart, Mind-to-Mind.
My blog, http://www.creatorsmind.wordpress.com is exploring this. They also have “the same” holistic references to their Body, Heart, Soul and Spirit.

Midas's made the same error into thinking that gold is everything, until he realizes that it's just a metal (got this from Paul Krugman's book).
I love the way you teach us, Harv! Thanks a lot for making us understand how to get rich! And it works, folks! I'm a millionaire in making! everyday great amounts of money are just coming to me! Thanks Harv!
Hey Harv, I've got a question… Have you read the book 'The science of getting rich' from Wallace D. Wattles? What books have you read that made you understand that there's a way to get rich?
Harv. One day i hope to be able to share as much wisdom as you do. Thank you for this wonderful insight
I don't know if it has been a coincidence but for the past three write-ups, I thought of the same thing you said. At least one sentence was on my mind. Thanks!
Hi Harv, giving out wealth may not be practical.”Give me a fish, I eat for a day(can I have some more?).teach me to fish I have food forever.”Thanks for sharing.Follow our heart,we shall find bliss. You have done the noblest deed of guiding students to help others through your mentor.Harv the Way,to success, physically and spiritually.God bless,
When T. Harv said in his book that you can be both you want in your life, be helpfull and rich, be kind and rich, be happy and rich, I realized that is just a matter of choise, money will just help to show whatever you are, what do you choose for you ? Here in Brazil ther is a comum frase that says: “Money doesn´t bring you happyness, it sends deliver” P.s sorry about the english I still learning.
Interesting article Harv, it is true money can't buy you happiness, if you sit back and think of the happy times in your life, chances are it was not at a bank or making an investment, and I'm also willing to bet you don't have photos of money in your photo albums on your computer.
Money provides peace of mind (the bills are taken care of) which frees you up to go enjoy friends, family, and activities you enjoy which brings happiness.
When I joined the Navy 25 years ago a wise old Chief told me “You'll never get rich in this business, but you can sure have a good time.” He was right, but he left out that you (or at least your family) could live comfortably. As long as the family is comfortable it's one less thing to worry about as you're sailing to “The Garden Spots” of the planet that Uncle Sam chooses to send you to.
Warren Buffett also donated a lot of money, A LOT (40 billion plus), and he also enjoys a simple life, still lives in his good old house of 50 years, plays lots of backgammon.
If anything I feel more inspired by Warren than by this guy…
Would be interested to see what the future brings for him, I agree with Bman on being skeptic of him finding happiness in the woods.
Hi,Harv.
You got a point there.
It is not ideal for most people who are not rich yet.
To take this advice.
Because they are many other who have both money, love what they do,spiritually and really… rich.
Thank you, Wallace
a poor person can't help anyone. One of the greatest things about building my wealth is the opportunity to give 10% of it away. I am constantly driven to earn more money every day so that I can give that 10% to a worthy cause. If I had no money and lived in a hut, how would that help the people of tahiti, the red cross, the breast cancer charities, the bird sanctuaries, and all the other worthy causes I have already donated to. We all have a duty to make money and give back, and in the process you'll get more back so you can continue to give, it's a cyclical process. Every time I give, I get a new order for my business, its like magic, then I can give more from the profits, and bingo another order comes in… Thank the universe I am a money …
I firmly believe that if you follow something based solely from making money you will never truly make 'enough'. Sir Branson was once quoted on this subject. “Someone that is out to 'make money' will never make enough.” You have to be out for something bigger. Create something, and the money will come. Have larger goals than just the outcome of money. Create something you are passionate about in a way to share you passion to others, and the money will follow.
A person's blueprint is a personal choice. Some people are content with what they have, and to them, they are successful.
Another may want to amass more wealth, but the contentment and happiness isn't there.
Some people would rather toil and work hard, some want to have the pleasures by making money work for them.
Happiness and contentment is a state of mind.
Man is insatiable.
Put these two concepts together?
When it comes to the inner game and the outer game, he seems to have it backwards, and achieved the outer success without the inner success. But I don't think that a very bad thing, as all he needs now is to conquer his inner world, and he already knows how to make the outer world work. Hope he can have his major breakthrough soon!
Dear Harv,
I have a question maybe there is someone who can help..
Over 10 years I sell cosmetic products under my own line.
It was very succesfull. Two years ago I wanted to start with a new productline. I have had already orders but because of a lawsuite that I lost I cannot make a new start. My lawyer goes to the higher court now because he finds the verdict unfair.
I try to find people who can help me I try to find investors but it seems (after more then 1 year of trying) there is no one who can help. I write detailed bussiness plans, i find new orders etc..
But everytime I think i find someone, people look at the past and never to the future.
Now I have debt around € 150.000.
I really believe in my products etc.. I do my affermations everyday…
Now Iám almost bankrupt..
I like to start a new bussiness..i have my dreams…
I have learned from the past..
..what is your best advise for me..I don't want go bankrumpt I want to be a very succesfull bussiness lady.
Any suggestions are welcome…
Kindest regards,
Shirley Myranda
It’s unfair for a wealthy person to advise someone who is struggling financially that “money isn’t everything.”
It is so true!! Love that sentence!
Thank you Harv for your wonderful blog!!
one question, is all the money gone now cause i sure could use some? oops missed another one!
one question, is all the money gone now?, cause i sure could use some, oops missed another one.
I think people focus too much on the word 'happiness' and mistake it for joy.
Happiness is based on happenings, something -an event or experience that occurs OUTSIDE of ourselves. When we rely on any outside influence to make us 'happy' we will be disappointed.
Joy is created inside of us by choosing and creating a positive environment in which to thrive.
People can be unhappy, but I rarely hear someone say they are 'unjoyful'.
When we choose to be responsible instead of reactionary (note; re-act=acting the same way over and over) We can respond with knowledge, information and wisdom.
It is all in the way we choose to change our blueprint.
Thanks Harv for your continuing insight and encouragement!

I agree fully with the author. The article is written with full understanding of the issue in question and the author is not preaching from a pedastal. // Money does not have to rule our lives, but it doesn’t have to fall by the wayside either // – very true. – R. Jagannathan
This is precisely why most people do not aspire to have more money. They equate having more and losing the really important things in life which is utterly wrong.
Wow – I grew up in the same country and can feel exactly what Mr. Rabeder grew up with – the difference is that I am not rich – yet. And Harv – with your great help – I will change that – and I know that I can be happy and rich – I have no doubt about that. Have a wonderful day. And: Austria is a most beautiful country!!!!
Me too I am so happy and greatful now that I am a millionaire
Thank you, Thank you ,Thank you
“I have a millionaire mind”
Dear simonadamsmymusicsuccess,
I love your comment and I totally agree with you on that.
You are great and I hope your business grows into mutibillion someday… and you will help so much more…
Thank you! It is always so heartwarming to know people like you live on the same time table as I am. I admire and lots respects!
I often like what you say. e.g. …being financially free: getting out of debt and staying out of debt with income that out-paces living expenses and materials wants. also e.g. Building wealth does not have to turn into greed, selfishness, or out-of-control materialism…We can grow emotionally, spiritually and financially….
Living comfortably may be ok for YOU, but what about your responsibility to give back to the world. If you don't make tons of money you cant give back to the world.
BTW I have pictures of money everywhere, on the walls, on my PC, its my goal to set the financial soldiers out to do their work, to seed investments that generate more money to give to charity, to play, to the financial freedom fund, to the education fund. Life is certainly about more than just the bills, but money is a tool to make amazing things happen, we all have a responsibility to make as much as we can so we can give as much as we can, there are people out there that need our help!
One of my favourite Harv teachings is simplification. I've moved to a smaller apartment, sold all the things that were dragging me down, and I can't tell you how much more freedom I feel to take action on the things that are really important to me!
Hi, Ashley. Yes, I have read “The Science of Getting Rich” from Wallace D. Wattles. Excellent read.
Here's some others I would recommend:
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
Psychology of Winning by Dennis Waitley
Magic of Thinking Big by David Joseph Schwartz
Thanks for stopping by and Happy Reading! -T. Harv
Great blog…
It's all how you look at the gifts you're given and how you use them that determines whether you'll enjoy them. He can go anywhere in the world but he eventually has to come home to himself to be happy…and you can do that even with money. You taught me that.
love, light, wisdom and laughter,

Shirley,
It sounds like you were doing great with your business but there’s something not right with your “money blueprint” that’s unconsciously sabotaging your success. Have you attended the Millionaire Mind Intensive?
Be Well,
T Harv
Didn't believe it for a minute.
Although money is not everything it sure would be nice to have it when bills are due! It would be nice to have enough money to pay the bills and have some left over to enjoy our simple way of life. I live in Louisiana, near the oil spill affected area. My husband and I used to fish the waters that are now polluted with oil and we can no longer fish there. So having a little money would help to find another place to relax and enjoy fishing once again.
Yeah, as per facebook Harv, I agree with this entire blog 1000%! Coming from a family of people who rationalized being poor, to the point where 'poorness' was a synonym for 'nobility'. This is nothing new, but still, can you imagine the subconscious money blueprint that I have had to overcome???
My father, respecting him for all of his hard work, secretly covets what he believes he cannot have. So, he will argue and preach about how money does not bring happiness, yet he cannot possibly know that because he has never had any! Haha!
So, the crux of this post Harv, for me, is that the 'experiential' is the ultimate. One cannot either know what something feels like without experiencing it for themselves first or know what is best for someone else without experiencing what that person is going through.
Thanks for a great post and looking forward to more! (Curious as to your thoughts on this…)
This article opens the door to people who want to do something different to get something different. Instead of just accepting the status quo as being the only way, question it. You did. And, now the way is open to others to do the same. The world can only get better by us doing that. Money serves to amplify what's already in us. That's what needs to be changed. Thanks, Harv, for being willing to fight the resistance and get to the goal, and encouraging others!
But, since it's already in him to make money then he can just do it again..
That “poor” guy is in for a surprise. Nothing is more stable than change in life. I had emigrated to another country where I did live in a very simple manner, no running water, but health sun and friends. That was great and I could have lived all my life in this manner. Really never been happier in my life.
But one day, the political regimen of the country changed and resulted of economic and social duress and the happy simple way of life I used to enjoy, along with the locals, turned into something else I had not signed up for. I had no back up plan and no money to relocate to something better for me. Luckily, my folks were able to buy me a plane ticket to repatriate me. I had nothing in front of me and I am still trying to get back on my feet… 8 years later.
I’m just really satisfied together with your crafting talents and also together with the framework in your blog site. Is niagra some sort of paid out design and also does one modify the item yourself? In any case keep up to date the nice quality crafting, it really is unheard of to search a fantastic blog such as this one these days.
Thank you for some other informative website. Where else may I get that type of info written in such an ideal way? I’ve a mission that I’m just now operating on, and I’ve been on the look out for such information. ddgcdaeakgbe
Dear Harv
thank you for your ideas which are effecting my attitude towards money and being rich. Nowadays I’m trying to find new ways to achieve freedom, especially start business without money.
