Image IS Everything
One of the ways we can become worthy of the success and happiness we want to come into our lives is to turn that record over in our head about who we really are. We need an image makeover.
If it comes down to clothes, getting into shape, material symbols—so be it. To each his own. “Dressing for success” to the president of a surfboard company may very well be vastly different than dressing for success to a banker. The image I’m referring to is how we actually perceive ourselves. What is going to determine your arena in money more than anything else is your self-image around money.
The image we want to project is one of somebody who deserves to be a partner in a lucrative joint venture, or someone who is confident enough in themselves to understand they don’t know everything nor do they have to, but they are fast learners who have their own unique value to bring to the table.
There are simply ways in which we can improve our self-image, universal truths we all need to embrace:
Number One: Stop beating yourself up! This is one of those rules like not complaining. There’s no room for self-criticism. Think of it this way: if you really cared about somebody, like a child for example, how would you treat them? How would you talk to them? What kind of tone of voice would you use? We would do that for others, but we treat ourselves like trash in comparison. True or true?
You want to catch self-criticism and immediately transfer that to an encouragement.
If you don’t have the confidence, you’ll never take actions. What kind of life can you live if you don’t trust yourself, encourage yourself! Become your own best friend! Be nice to yourself! If you’re not going to be loving to yourself, then who is? Nobody can love you until you love you!
And you can’t love another person until you love yourself. Until then, you’re ripping them off. You’re the one who starts it. How can you respond lovingly to someone who criticizes you when you don’t love yourself enough to not criticize yourself?
No complaining, no self-criticizing. These are ironclad rules for happiness and success.
Number Two: Practice Receiving Someone gives you a compliment. Most people go, “Oh it was nothing.” How about from now on we simply say, “Thank you!”
So many people diminish their own significance, even when others want to give it to them. By down-playing a compliment, you’re essentially telling the person giving the compliment that (A) You don’t believe them, and/or (B) You don’t believe you deserve to be complimented. So what does the universe do? It responds to what you put out there: ‘I don’t deserve to be complimented.’ The compliments get scarcer, you criticize yourself, and the whole insane cycle starts again.
To paraphrase Mandela, you do no one a service by diminishing your own light. Quite the opposite: you give others permission to let their light shine by being that example. Receive compliments, accolades, praise—and yes, even criticism—with an open heart. You’d be amazed at how that transfer to receive more money for the value you bring to the market and to others.
Image IS everything … and its nothing, a classic Zen paradox. Of course people are going to respond to how we look … we don’t need too many primers on that. But we need to look at ourselves as people who are competent in what we do, have value to give, and deserve to be rewarded for it. The money you “deserve” is a choice in life just like anything else. You choose what you receive through what you do. It’s up to you.
Now we want to hear from you. What are some ways—tradition or spiritual—that people can improve their self-image in any arena of life? It’s all an integrated whole, and poor self-image in one area while underlie all. Let’s close those gaps and enjoy the fruits of the Millionaire Mind!

Good post, Really true.

Got a lot out of this post! Thanks Harv! As a life coach, I tell my clients they need to get the basics down and I think that includes self-image – it's very much connected to self-care. The basics I recommend to my clients: a regular spiritual practice (however you definite it), regular exercise, eating well, getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, and don't forget about fun in your daily life! Am glad that this position has been true to my life when i become a student of self-development in 2006!U can never Love someone else better if u do not love thyself!
Very true! I am always complimenting my family and others. but when I receive compliments I tend to blow them off. I need to stop doing that. Like Harv Always says ” what you do in anything; you do in everything”. So we need to do everything we can to be the best we can so we can add value to others as well as our own lives. It all boils down to just that. Kerri Eileen Gardner
I totally agree Harv. I suggest getting a piece of paper and writing “ME” in the middle. Then in a circle around the outside, write down all the valuable things you see yourself as.
I've done this more than once.
Once I wrote: Leader, Visionary, Transformer, Uplifter, Evolver, Artist, CEO.
Another time I wrote:
SUN (lighting the way), HEART (flowing passion and love), ROCKET (a lift to the top), ARTIST (painting + re-painting the canvas), GARDENER (nurturing growth)
My mum always used to say “Self-praise is no praise”. I spent my life putting myself down. I am brilliant at it in fact. It is my way of playing small so somebody will like me. It isn't humble to shine your light! What a lot of baggage I carry from my life as a “so called good catholic girl”. Then you talk about original sin… that is a whole new education in itself…. What if we could turn the whole thing around as you say Harv? What if we could treat ourselves as we like to be treated, love Virginia xxx

This is great advice Jason, thanks!

Hi Virginia…touched by your post. Not to justify the generations before us for not knowing how to empower us with the light to shine but I believe they just didn't know any better. But now we have the tools and information to turn it around. Maybe you were meant to have your life experience so you can find the “huge bright light” within that YOU ARE and shine now so you can in turn learn how, live it and show others just like you (and there are millions) how to do it too? What if? We are so perfect just the way we are! Big virtual hugs…angela
self-image & self-worth is important, if you don't believe in yourself, how do you expect others to belive in you?
Most people want others to like them, but they don't like themselves in the first place.
This is important because other people can tell if we value ourselves or not and based on that they will act toward us.
To improve-self image we need to work on ourselves in fullest way possible. Do everything we can to improve our physical look, social life and our business. They all effect each other. And the success in these areas equals our confidence or self-worth.
Excellent post as always Harv. I firmly believe in the importance of projecting the right image and foot forward. When we look like a million bucks, we feel like a million bucks, and when we feel like a million bucks we are able to attract great things into our lives much easier than otherwise.
I once read this book for artists – the purpose of it was to inspire creativity and productivity in art.
It spoke of how many artists have problems valueing their work because it is “just art”. Having been brought up in a practical society where “art” is an extra, a frill, even an indulgence it can be difficult for an artist to place value on art because of these, dare I say, “blueprints”.
The book suggested repeating a mantra of sorts, which fits in this conversation, to counteract and cancel out the blueprint.
Here it is:
“I matter. What I create matters.”
It's simple but it cuts to the core of the issue of valueing creativity.

Harv. I love hearing your voice, reading is like you are telling me. Remember this, tell me then I will forget, show me then I will remember, involve me than I will understand. as you can see in this video. https://youtu.be/GR_vDq2iXJ4
I love how you ask me to participate, true or true
Wonderful post, Harv.. You are a true visionary. I have one thought, how would you deal with family who own family businesses where they expect you to work for them for FREE. How do you bring up the topic of money when they have supported you all your life when you didn't know any better. Sometimes, when you ask for money in return for your services, they are shocked. Any suggestions?
Amazing post as always!
You have explained it in such a nice manner. There is a saying in my culture, that says, we shouldn't say no to good things (like money, gifts, and all) when someone is giving it to us. Didn't know this should be applied to compliments too. But definitely this would be best way to improve your self image and confidence level. Thanks.
Thank you very much. Really appreciated reading this and wil make sure to incorporate it on a daily and consistent basis.
Thank you Harv. Almost like getting a kick in the butt.
I chuckled because you sounded like my Mom.
The good voice, the one that believed in me and always told me to get my hair cut (she's passed).
I made an appointment today after almost 6 months, before I read this post. Too funny. Taking action to match the outside to how amazing I feel inside. Thank you for your part. Image IS Everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Holidays!!
When i was in college and thought of someting high…people used to tell me…you have an attitude…a negetive attitude. You will not achieve anything like that, you only dream of it. I stopped thinking big. Later I realised that small dreams have no power…think big…imagine big and you will achieve it. Attitude is a small thing that makes a lot of difference. You will not get anything unless u expect anything….As a man thinketh so shall he be….
Thanks Jason…for sharing your experience…I am sure this will make a lot of difference in my life.

Couldn't agree more.
Very well put it is what I paint about all the time. LOVE, LOVING yourself and others. I would like your permission to post this on my blog, giving you full credit.
Fantastic share…Thanks again T-Harv….
Thanks your sharing Jason.
I suggest you can use mindmap. Mindmap can help you discover your potential.
in doing everything at 100 percent I am endeavoring to include this as a guide to my poor self image and perhaps use it as a tool to receive, i may struggle and fail, but I am willing to start even if I may make a mistake which is one of my fears
Thanks Harv. 5 minutes a day affirming “I am Confident”, helped me a lot to change the way I use to see myself and therefore to improve my relationship with others.
Do you remember what that book was called?
My personal version of liking and accepting myself, of not being perfect, is the acceptance that, barring conversion to Christianity, I am going to hell.
I don't really believe in an afterlife hell so this is a bit insincere of me but the idea is that I will never get it “right”, in spite of my best efforts, so I am going to congratulate myself on my best effort and not worry about the parts that might come together better next time out.
I have written about this at https://imaginingbetter.com/?p=… – even got Dale Carnegie into my rant.
Great article T. Keep up the good work. I just read “The DNA of Top Achievers” by Chris Widener. One thing I can say is that a Leader and Top Achiever all have common traits. Success is no secret. It is a habit made in our daily choices. So I guess our success is hidden in our daily agenda.
A Leader has a strong inner core and is who he/she decides. They are never what they feel. They understand the power of words and thoughts, like you say. Our results today are products of our thoughts yesterday, therefore, our results tomorrow will be an accumulation of our thoughts today.
Great to network with all of the leaders here. Be blessed!
