Why It’s Important To Practice Now Being Who You Want To Be Later

One of the best questions I’ve ever been asked, but rarely ever get asked is, “What is it really like to be rich?” You’d think I get asked that often but I don’t, so when I heard it, it seemed rather odd.
After thinking about it a little, my answer was and still is: being rich is the same as anything, or it can be way better if you want it to be.
What do I mean? You have a lot more money, and that gives you, usually, a lot more freedom if you allow that. It gives you a lot more time if you allow that. It gives you a lot less worry about money if you allow that.
It gives you the opportunity to help other people if you want to do that. It gives you the opportunity to do whatever you want during the day if you allow yourself to do that. It gives you all kinds of opportunities. It’s all great, yes?
Notice, what do I say with every one of these? If you allow that.
Plenty of millionaires still work, like it’s their job, because maybe they didn’t set their business up to be sellable and release them from key responsibilities. Or maybe they went nuts with their spending and now have to make more money to maintain their lifestyle.
So it’s like you have business success, but do you have freedom? You have lots of money, but do you spend your money wisely? You drive better cars, but do you still complain about traffic?
As I laugh about it with my friends now, we still have problems but we have what we call “rich problems,” or as my life partner Michelle puts it, “champagne problems.”
I mean that sounds pretty ridiculous, but it doesn’t matter. To the mind a problem is a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or you’re broke, middle-class or whatever. If you’ve got a problem, your mind makes it the end of the world, doesn’t it?
So my broke person problem was I didn’t know how I was going to pay the rent that month. Now, when I find out that one of the resorts that we’re planning on going to at Christmas time doesn’t have any ocean-front rooms left, my mind goes, “What the hell? I can’t believe it! Two days ago it did. What happened here?”
I know I sound like a jerk, but it’s not me that’s the jerk. It’s my mind that’s the jerk. You see, that mind is still the same. “I have to get what I want. I’m not happy if I don’t get what I want. I deserve it. I’m entitled. I should be this. I should be that.” Blah, blah, blah, blah.
All of these are just unhappy thoughts. So I notice it, and I think, “Wow man, okay, listen. There are hundreds of millions of people that can’t even eat tomorrow, and you’re worried about a frickin ocean-front room? Get a life, man.”
I take a breath and I get over it, but it doesn’t mean I don’t feel the problem right away.
A problem is a problem. My reaction to the problem is the same reaction. I just get over it a little more quickly, and I know in the back of my mind it’s not really a problem. I’m just making up a big deal out of nothing.
So what I’m saying is, rich is fantastic, but you have to allow rich to be fantastic just like you have to allow anything to be fantastic, so be now who you want to be later, especially if later is rich.
In other words practice being a person who doesn’t worry; a person who enjoys their freedom as it is now; a person who doesn’t let little things bother them.
We’re creatures of habit. You take yourself with you wherever you go. If you want to be a happy millionaire later, practice being happy now. Stop waiting to achieve a certain level of success to be peaceful, practice being peaceful now.
If you’re the kind of person that, even when broke, allows the best of a situation to emerge without it coming from a place of fear, or entitlement, or lack, then yeah, being rich will be awesome…if you let it be!

For Your Freedom,

It’s taken me over the years to realize what being rich really means for me. And you make some great points on this Mr. Eker. It’s not about waiting to have lots of money to be rich, it’s about the attitude we have right now about living life. Being rich is a state of mind no matter what dollar amount is in our bank account. Thank you for sharing some great insight on this!
I am practicing being happy now and all the time. Thanks for telling me to do it everyday, so it can become my way of life.
My chief aim is to live a savory and abundant life now, that’s full of fun, freedom, fulfillment, love and positivity!
This year I’ve learned so much in regards of being the person I want to be now before the paycheck, accolades and ranks come. If I’m not there now mentally, the universe will never deliver it to me physically!
Thanks Harv!
Great thoughts Mr. Eker that I can relate to all too well! (I had to CLEAN my big beautiful custom built home and tend to the menial needs of my beautiful healthy happy toddler son!) We all need to “get a life” at times and vibe in supreme gratitude.
Hi Harv
Thanks for temporarily setting my monkey mind at ease with this post. No matter our disposition, we have a choice in how we respond and act to the circumstances that we have created in our lives. I like your no nonsense approach…keep it flowing!
I’ve seen very rich people not happy, I’ve seen very poor people not happy and it had nothing to do with money.
I’ve lived a rich life since I was young, grateful for it all. I am ready to utilize my rich life and move it in the direction of my dreams to live an even more fulfilling life.
Indeed we have a choice! It’s a shame so many people leave that choice in the hands of the first signal mind response without giving that response a second thought.
Claiming the “right” to react without thinking takes away from us the right to feel good no matter the circumstances.
Thank you! I am always telling my child just because you don’t have something you want, be gratefully for what you have! We have a good life Finantial stable, and there are people living day to day on the streets, be happy you have a roof over your head and good food to eat, It’s a mind set, be content with the life you have.

Hi Harv, I really enjoyed this post. I think the fastest way to happiness is through gratitude. Regardless of where you are on your life’s journey (old, young, rich, poor), as long as you can focus on what you have, rather than focus on what you don’t, you will be ‘rich’.
Excellent, excellent points! If you give in to fear now, what’s to say you won’t do the same when you’re rich? Harv, have you ever tried EFT Tapping? That’s what I do when I’m freaking out about something (whether it’s a small irritant or a big life issue.) I find it calms down my emotional brain so I can think rationally and take some action.
It is true that I don’t even have rent money, right now, and my husband ran away with a younger woman, but peace of mind is a choice. People can’t believe I am laughing at my self, and the situation, but is being hurt, and heart broken going to fix the problem? Absolutely not, so I look at the positive side. This is a new beginning, for me to be now, who I want to b, in the future. I really love this post, it makes all the sense in the world, thanks.
A wonderful attitude, Marisol. Sometimes, we go through a really difficult time and it seems that it’s the end, but it opens the door for a new life and with your amazing attitude, you will make that new life and awesome one 🙂
Good for you! You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. If your husband doesn’t want to drink from your pond then why would you want him. The past is over and cannot be changed. This is the only moment that you can experience.
On reading your post, my mind flew back to the song “Let it be” from the Beatles, and I have to say, I finally understood it (Life, not the song).
It is not about accepting the good or bad that life throws at us. It is quite different, it is about allowing Life to be.
Taking it from your own words Harv:
“Let it be” really means “if you allow it”.
Thanks Harv.
It’s just like the milionary mind book, one of those pass that you say: Our mind it’s just like a big file. When something come to give the information (complaint) you got to choise between take or just say: Thank you for the information but I rather not to use it. Alow us to be every single things that happen to us, to happen natural. My soon was born in the begin this month and after that I realized: I want to experiencie this: The good moments and the crying, the scare, everything. Thank’s Harv.
Para quienes quieran leer el artículo en español, aquí les dejo una buena traducción: https://caminosdeconciencia.wordpress.com/2016/08/17/por-que-es-importante-practicar-ser-ahora-aquella-persona-que-quieres-ser-despues/
One of my favorite TED Talks deals with this very topic. Amy Cuddy, the Speaker presents an idea, a thought that most of us are familiar with:
“Fake it till you make it” which is now so commonplace I long ago devalued it in my mind… But, she takes it one step further in her Talk:
“Fake it till you become it” and that has stuck with me.
I have not always been successful in applying it consistently, but this article of yours reminds me how effective that “thinking” can be. I’ve arrived at an important life-moment that’s calling for the very best I can produce, develop, design… or forever hold my peace. I choose to struggle through my situation and emerge victorious. Thanx for your compassionate, concerned, and effective input. You make a difference.
It is first time when I’ve read the article carefully. I understood what is about to be rich but in the same time you have to be happy with what you have now!
Very good example with the rent and than a nice hotel for Christmas!
Thank you T. Harv Eker

Dear Harv , Im your student from India .. Luv U Harv .. You are awesome ..You sound like Paramahamsa Yogananda ..who talks about being ” a joy Billionaire “..
Every thing starts with intention. It comes into being with feeling. This is why it makes sense to practice now being who you want to be later.
Hi Harv, I love this quote “If you want to be a happy millionaire later, practice being happy now.” I agree that when we make more money, problems start to become ‘champagne problems’. And you’re right that we should practice being happy now, because being rich doesn’t mean we don’t have problems. By building a foundation of happiness starting now, when we become rich, it will only enhance our happiness.
This is super duper wow!!!!
Thank you!
what a informative and edu
Hi Harv – many thanks for a timely reminder of how important it is to be thankful for what we have regardless of how much money etc we enjoy. We have to be 100% responsible for how we feel and react.
Wow..that’s great… I can be rich, I can be happy NOW. Whatever happen with my bank account right now. Thank you the very cool insight Harv.
Being thankful for all the abundance I already have, enjoying it, using it, and saying YESSs to life… (even when it doesn’t feel so good)
Well, this is another way to look at it 😀 Thanks for sharing!
I can remember when I HAD… Things were not always joyful but I still think HAVING is better than not and with Harv’s inspiration I would learn how to deal with it when I HAVE again ?
Pure common sense and a recipe for happiness and potential success.
Many thanks
Where can I get these teachings again seems I am a lil’ late. Please and Thank You , Much Gratitude.
JESUS Is LORD ; )
I felt a bit disconnected from the message when I first read this.
To me, one has to be contended. there are blessings in life, joys in families, security in environment and returns on investments.
To others who has the lacks – one just need to be extra sensitive.
financial freedom is a blessing. financial lessons can be learnt. hardships make us treasure money more. we do not squander or waste resources.
personally I do not believe in fast route to money success.
Having money lessens our worries in life
