Split the Difference
With so much turmoil going on in the world today, sometimes it can seem too selfish to think about personal riches while so many struggle for basics. This is a feeling I experienced periodically throughout my life—that flip-flop between getting rich as an unqualified goal and wanting to get rid of it all and retreat to a temple or something, or otherwise reject the idea of staying rich.
I’ve made it and lost it. I went from being rich to ‘money is not the most important thing in life’ and ‘why would you put that much focus on it?’ Honestly, I used to think this was a curse. It’s like I had this split personality where one side was about being an entrepreneur and focusing on finances. But I had this other part of me that just wanted to be at the monastery, meditate and eat in silence.
It took me years to figure out that neither extreme was really me. Sometimes it takes success to understand success in itself is not enough. I had to win and lose, tune out and turn on in order to learn that when you reach your first big goal, joyousness, gratitude, and satisfaction don’t just automatically jump on for the ride.
There has to be an intention for these intangibles, and that means knowing what makes you joyous, grateful and satisfied—where money has nothing to do with it. The money only takes it to a whole other level. So discovering these things about yourself certainly does require asking yourself quality questions—or in my world, that and some soul searching.
There’s an eloquent balance between wealth and spirituality that I can now fully embrace, as should we all. For the spiritual-minded in a world of such disparity, consider yourself blessed to have an interest in that and in financial success. Be the fortunate one to put the two together and help other people know that they can be rich and spiritual too. You can be rich and a good person with intentions that consider others.
If spirituality doesn’t ring true for you, throw that out the window anyways. Both riches at any costs and “money doesn’t matter” are two extremes that simply don’t work. They didn’t work for me, and I can’t think of anyone I know who can survive either over the long haul. Intend to split the difference. Balance is beautiful.
Now I look at my duality as a blessing, thanking my stars for the successes and failures, those swings from hermit to world conqueror. You can have your goals, and when you achieve them acknowledge yourself and be thrilled, but there better be something else bringing you joy in your life, or you can end up psyching yourself out of success.
Bank riches without inner riches is a bank account waiting to see itself dwindle, because you’ll look for other ways to use that money to fill a hole that it can never fill—even if that means consciously or unconsciously getting rid of it.
Do you have any stories of having a bunch only to lose it willfully? What was it that finally made you realize the money wasn’t enough, and what did you do to get that sense of real satisfaction? What was the particular lesson you can share with the rest of the Millionaire Mind community? We want to hear from you!

This resonates with my life as well. Bank riches without inner riches is indeed sad. We have so much to learn in this journey called life. Great thought-provoking article again, Harv!
At my age and my, current, situation I find myself in. your article so resonates with me. I'm starting my own business and I just can't find the mojo to want to do it for money alone. I can't believe that God put me on this earth not to make a contribution to community, human-kind, something somewhere. It's not that I don't care about money, I do, but not for the sake of money alone.

Very timely once again Harv! I love roller coasters! Just prefer them to be the ones at the amusement parks and not in my financial/spiritual life. I like to learn from the mistakes of others and to model others that are successful. It still seems that if we do not actually experience the ups and downs to some degree, we don't actually get it. It seems like an 'all or nothing' in many areas of life in our societies. Work really hard~then play/party really hard~ get spiritual one day a week then forget what was learned until the next week. To live in harmony with passion and motivation each day to do what I love to do and to create wealth by adding value to the lives of others; now that is certainly what I want!
Much Light and gratitude Harv,
Kimberly
Thank you Harv. Another excellent post. I had focused most of my life on the spiritual and not paid much attention to my money blueprint. Now that I have started my own business like Jim Foston, I found myself drawn to your teachings and wisdom to find a balance. Between passionate service to others and passionate personal success… Grateful for all who contribute on your FB page and blog.. Happy Easter Weekend.
Hermit to world conqueror, now there is an image I like! Perhaps, it is the inner discipline of the hermit who sits, meditates, and listens which shows the conqueror how to create the world. Thanks, Harv. Excellent article.
Very Well Shared Harv! I thought I was weird when I went through this experience. Now I strike a balance like you said! Thks again Harv!
EEeeewwwww……….be rich or monastry?…….hmmm…..must be failing too many times until fed up?? ok, eat free, stay free, drink free, thought free at deep forested monastry? eeewwww……… heard a comment about the lucky people in a jail- commit a crime, eat free, stay free, no work, no worries….. monastry is another escape point nowadays? fuyoh……

I'm a supporter of 'the theory of convergence', where money & spiritual gain can be combined. If anyone thinks that money is the root of all evils and would like to pass it out quickly like Richard said, please remember someone…eerrr…… with big eyes and hat in the 60's…..thank you :p
That truly might be the biggest and most sacred skill in life to learn and abide to – the balance between focusing on money-making and spirituality! And like you said, Harv – not to go into any of the extremes. It is so important to find that spot in the middle.
It was great to hear it from you!
Antony you have clearly never been to an MMI or any other of Harv's courses. Going to an MMI CHANGES YOUR LIFE IN JUST 3 DAYS! You might think 23k is good money, but YOU ARE BROKE simply because that is your money blueprint. Book an MMI course today and you'll take the brakes off and earn limitless income per week.
By the way if you honestly have read the Millionaire Mind Book, then you clearly need to read it a few times more. RICH AND SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE ARE GOOD PROMOTERS, thats why you need to model rich people like harv. Learn how Harv sells, if you don't like selling YOU WILL NEVER BE RICH
Harv rocks and changes peoples lives, Me, my partner, my business and our bank balances can verify that from personal experience

Great post Harv! You're always awesome!
I believe the answer lies within this sentence also, “There’s an eloquent balance between wealth and spirituality that I can now fully embrace, as should we all.” Thanks Harv
I had it and now I am in the lost it mode. This is the most “lost it” I have ever been. I went to the MMI in June 2009 in Denver as well as the Business Bootcamp in March 2010 in Anaheim. Lots of good info and I am no dummy. But why am I where I am? So I can truly say that three days, although very profound, does not guarantee success. Life happens. I have taken this time in my life to assess my definition of success in my quest to see which way to turn next, and I agree that happiness is every bit as important as money in the bank account, but happiness and inner peace is much harder to reach when the bank account is empty and the creditors are calling.
Now I have taken a job that is not fulfilling so I can pay the bills, and I have very little energy left at the end of the day to work on reaching my dream. I am discouraged…but I try to spend even just five minutes a day on my next endeavor.
And I too am a bit discouraged by all the people who issue advice to help you become a success, but really their intent is to sell you something. I don't need to buy anything else, I need true advice to help me through the trenches as I dig my way out.
After I do dig my way out, then maybe I can write a book about my experience! I already have a very different perspective on wealth and money than I have heard elsewhere. Maybe I can help people by sharing my experience, as Harv did in his book.
I am sure you have heard of the goddess Lakshmi…she is the goddess of balance between material and spiritual wealth and abundance! LOVED this article…very close to my heart…;-)
Hi Harv, Loved this article, life as I now see it is just like the money pots, if my life's emotions and finance are split equally to the 'pots' then I have a balance in my life both monetary and emotionally, when ever the pots are empty so is my life Play= Love and fun, Education= knowledge and growth, Essential= basic human needs Give= spirituality and purpose, LTSFS= Renewal, FFA= investment in myself and my business and consequently re filling my pots. The pots system from MMI is wonderful for giving my life a balance for making lots of money as well as balancing the rest of my life, thank you, Merci, Toda! thank you!

Thanks for the compliment by the way, but i am not harv. We are all unique 🙂 You can check out my site and it's whois record if you wish…
What I can say from my own experience is that since you have never been to an MMI (they take place in london by the way) and I have, I can tell you that my life changed there and then in the room.
By the way, there is no possible way that Harv could missell the stock market call, since it was completely free.
If you think 23k a week is thinking rich, then fine, that is your financial thermostat. The rest of us that have learnt to take it to the next level at MMI, do not have a capped figure on our income…
I choose to model rich and successful people. I have a millionaire mind because I choose to…
Every one has their own choices.
You can be right or you can be rich, I choose rich every time!

I never had a feeling sorry to those struggling for basics. Please, don't misunderstand me, I still help them but I don't feel guilty to make money because I don't focus on money, I focus on journey. I enjoy suffering, enjoy learning, enjoy the way to success, enjoy the way to make money. The journey makes me be more patient, be more determination, be a better a person. Money is just a reward for what you have gone thru, for your determination, for your patient, for your strong will.
I work hard for it, I deserved it, why should I feel sorry for them. A lot of people keep blaming their families, they government, their countries even the world is not fair. But the truth is, we must stop blaming and start fighting for our dreams. It is how we evaluate the world.
Rich people (I mean those use the right way to get rich) able to balancing. They know money is not the main thing, in order to get rich, relationship is very important, religion is very important, if we truly want to get rich, we need to learn to balance our life, otherwise, if you only rich in having a lot of money, that is not considered rich, you are just money slave.
Hi Vivienne,Good summary :)Agree also with onipion from Stanley on soft’ selling Anyway, as Harv and Joel Roberts mentioned:You can make a living if you let your customer to tell you their problemsBut,You can make a fortune if you make your customers to let you to tell them their problems.. Cheers Gita
