Why Did I Start This Business Again??

I wonder how many would-be entrepreneurs consider—while they’re thinking about running a successful business—that ultimate success means not running that business?
Building a business that has you stuck in the middle of it isn’t much better than working for someone else under their terms. It gets to the point where you look up one day and you find that you might make some money, but now you have no life! You’re a slave to your business. Money with no life, or vice versa, is brutal.
When you are the one running your business, you are at the very center of it. YOU make all the key decisions. YOU manage all the key relationships with all the key customers. You have to deal with the key suppliers and every key problem in your business. You’re the only one who you really trust, and the pressure just keeps mounting. And there’s not much of a way out because you’ve built a business that’s based on experience and expertise.
Every new customer requires more work. Results are inconsistent and sometimes you don’t even know why. Your customer service may be kind of iffy because you’re the only one who really does a great job of it.
And when you’re away, you’re anxious about what’ll happen when you’re gone. You don’t have time for anything as it is, and when you do, you feel like you probably should be working on the business. And then it’s hard to get good people, yes? That’s especially true if you’re trying to hire superstars to cover you when you’re gone.
Think of the difference between hiring someone who’s honest rather than teaching them to be honest, or hiring someone that’s enthusiastic rather than teaching enthusiasm. Imagine you had a staff where you hire them with the values that you share, and they are capable of doing what you need them to do while you actually do what you want to do and should be doing—which is focusing on keeping that business on the success track.
The definition of a successful business is simple: when it works with or without you. It doesn’t depend on you and that translates into increased growth, increased profits, and most importantly, increased satisfaction.
It delivers consistent, predictable, and superior results. There’s a good team in place doing what it needs to do without uncertainty or undue pressures on you to make decisions that they should be making.
The only way this is possible is to have systems in place that speak for you and your business. If you have a system, you smooth out the ups and downs. You’re able to have predictability in your results, and you’re not held hostage to yourself by needing to ‘over-the-shoulder’ manage. Systems free you from the day to day. It allows you to work on developing the future.
Over the next couple of weeks we’ll take a look at some of the different aspects of systemizing so that if you choose, you can sell it for much more money than you would have without having those systems in place.
Remember: what did we get into this for? To have another job?
What do you think? Has the power of systemizing affected the growth or success of your business? If so, how? We want to hear from you!!!

This is certainly becoming a huge consideration for me these days. In every business project I plan, I think about how to turn it into a passive income one. Sometimes I'm not successful at this as the product or service I want to launch is still considered active income. But if I can at least introduce a passive element, then it's a start. Eventually, I think it is worthwhile to turn all income streams into passive and just leave the active ones in areas that I really like doing at the frequency whenever I want to.
Very true. Well put together, i agree Clint.
This is timely for me as I just begin on my road of business owner. As I am building my business I'm keeping your points in mind, each day taking notes to outline the methods I am using.
McDonald have one of the best systems in place that is why they are the number #1 fast food chain
This is exactly true, systems are key and having a business that runs itself is the statement of success. Great information.
Beekeeping is great, the bees do all the work, they are positive, enthusiastic, they are happy when they are making honey. The only big conflict is when you want to steal the honey you want for your business but a tight bee suit seems to help. Chocolet made with pure honey is heaven.
Sound like your article described me and my retail business shortcomings. I have been hugely successful on many levels but have had only 3 weeks vacation in 9 years. I have had very few weekends off. I have tried many things to systematize and delegate. I am now letting go of this business to do some other things where I can make my own schedule. People are trying to pull me back into the same thing but I am clear if I haven't gotten it right in the last 9 years I won't in the next 9 years. I will follow your suggestions with interest so I can do better next time. While I appear successful the ultimate success is it not needing you. Kinda like raising kids.
This is my fourth year trading, and this issue is my biggest concern. So far, I'm actually building the foundations of what I think -I know!- my business will become. I have a target, and so far, most of the responsibilities are on me. However, once it is done, I'll be delivering them to my staff. When the business grow and I am able to have more staff, I'll get more income, so it is only a matter of time.
I'd like to hear more ideas to do all this, so far I only know one: Pay your staff according to what they produce, don't give them just a normal sallary based in working hours that will ruin it all! They will care about your business if they get profit from its growing.
Amen. I just discovered that over the past 20 years, as I went from job to job to even creating my own businesses, that I really just created another job for myself that I was 'stuck' in…can we say “PRISON!” Not a pleasant realization as you can see here: https://bit.ly/sBpmZh. So now I am stepping back to create SYSTEMS and a team to support me so I can truly be FREE.
Inspiring, yes, I like it. I am a designer and artist and I love to work on my ideas. Just in planning to start my own business and I think it´s fun even if I work a lot. It was already a long path to develop and dare it, to have the courage now to do it. Because I started to feel more confidence in me. Just dare and belief in it.
Excellent thoughts! I'm not certain how to ever get over it, however.
The Power of Systems that you mentioned is something that I will be working on, this is a very timely blog, and I will start reading your “Speed Wealth” book again. These are key ideas which i will need to work on again.
As i have set up our businesses I have always had in mind to make systems so that i do not have to be there. Making money while i sleep is an incredible feeling.
Systems…. Smart Systems work. They have worked for me and thousands of other successful business owners. I would counsel to strive to model franchises. Most successful franchises have amazing systems in place.
A good business coach
I am expanding rapidly and am bringing on 4 interns to assist with the swell of activities required. I am always weighing how I chose my activities against this idea of am I living in my garden of Eden? so the wonderful opportunity is to expand the business and work less, put systems and contracts in place, take out some of my (mothering) formula and let the joy flow! The E Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber is one of the best book on how to systemizing your business..
Spot on advice here T. Successful businesses are run on ideas, and these ideas must be systemized. Also, the people working in the biz must be high energy folks willing to work the system.
Thanks for sharing!

I learn everything I need to learn about a process, implement it and tweak it until it's working for me and I know it's producing the results I want, then I create a document and a video that shows someone how to do it the same way, and then I outsource it. Bingo. Business process being implemented without my direct input. My role?, manage the process so it keeps working.
What about Policies, Procedures, Processes, Departments and Operations, (aswell as Systems)? Are they as important too? I can see these items in PLC Companies.
My business is an “unfranchise” and we have been trained to “follow the system” to be duplicatable. The power of systemizing has greatly affected the growth and success in my business.
This is so important. We hear a lot about having a proper mindset for running a business, but you also need to know how to run a business so it's profitable and not just another job. I'm looking forward to hearing more about systems. This concurs with the principles In have been reading about to systematize my business. Thank-you for sharing this.
What about when You are the person that has to create the product such as art? You are the only one who can do that because that is what your career is and your passion? Once product is available you can pass on the selling and other things to competent people, but what do you do about being the only one who can create product?
Well, the whole point of network marketing – of which so many people are terrified – is to develop a business which runs itself. Oddly enough, if you do it right, it works. Not as easily as it's cracked up to, of course, but it's amazing how many millionaires have come from it, and how little work they have to do once the business is built.
So exactly when did you come into my mind and write what I have been thinking?
What is it you do?
I don't think NM is about having a business that runs itself, but it is about joining a business which has established most of the systems for you – the product, R & D, the marketing systems and strategies, and the generalised brand marketing and awareness. Marketing material is particularly important as you can waste time and money getting your message right, when others have already tried and tested it for you.
then that is art – for which you explloit the intellectual property via licences
…. you can spend all your time creating that paperwork … but that would mean your business was being a lawyer – or in business governance
I've read several of these comments, andwe all would like systems to ease the work for us, but please don't all think you have to create a system for your business in order to systemise it for success.
There are many establshed systems out there that you can buy or subscribe to to help your business, from sales and marketing to policies and procedures.
But the real genius of systems is the one money can't buy and it allows you to make money while you sleep – and that one is called Mother Nature. How many of you have invested in an apple tree or living animals, like hens, that don't require your constant attention, yet will bear fruit overnight and save or earn you money as the years go by?
Don't over complicate life by thinking that you have to create it – just tap into what is already out there doing what it does by nature.
Ann, Nine years ago I created a working fine art studio/gallery. I had a traditional gallery for 13 years. 4th St Studio was designed to get the best out of the artists who participated. That number of artists have ranged from near 60 to 20. It was a new business model when I started and I have inspired many but it looks easier than it is. I will now writing a book to explain the parts that weren't so obvious.

Such a critical concept to live by…work ON your business, not IN your business.
Read on facebook last week “Capitalism is a form of welfare in which the rich are paid for not working”
employment is just a temporary if you want freedom put up a business with a system. In certain way residual & passive income we're working for it in our family as new beginner from employment to business..
Friends of mine just sold their business of 35 years and had to change everything in order to sell it. That process took three years and a lot of outside experts to make it sale-able, but brought a huge increase in the sale price. Now they are helping other friends to change their business so they won't have to go though the same thing when they are ready to sale.
