Your Business Reflects You

If someone told you, right before you got out of the gate, “Sixty-three percent of all businesses fail within the first six years,” would you still want to start a business?
That’s the figure according to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics. That means most people stand a little bit better than a 50/50 chance of, at minimum, staying above water; we’re not even talking about profitability.
Given that reality, it’s good to remind ourselves of why we wanted to do this business thing in the first place. Some people want to make more money. Perhaps it’s about taking care of your family, or taking care of them in the style you’d like. Maybe you want to be a better provider, a better parent, or a better spouse. It could be about more freedom, or more quality time.
Some people start a business because they believe it will give them greater security. They realize that working for somebody else and having someone else make fundamental economic decisions in their lives just doesn’t give them the kind of control they want. So they start a business for a different lifestyle.
Whatever the reason, the same fundamental question remains: what’s so important about any of this? What’s really behind it all?
I think—just as important as taking care of loved ones, or being successful, or being in control, or even being free—we are most basically fulfilling the creative impulse to grow something, to make something that didn’t exist before, and to nurture it as best we can. It really helps to understand this when it seems like the steam may be going out while trying to get your business up and running. This isn’t and can’t just be about money—though that is a pretty obvious goal for whatever those reasons we see above.
You also can’t ignore the “maverick,” individualistic impulse to do something different, or something completely unusual, so you build a business, go out there and you learn something. You develop a core expertise, gain some experience, and build your business around that.
There are so many basic human elements to creating a business—freedom, or accomplishment, care for others, individual expression—it makes you wonder how we could stand to live by not starting a business?
Our reasons better be more than just “success,” though, because if you make it past that 63% mark, the bigger that you get, the more the headaches come, and then it just kind of gets worse if you don’t know what you’re really getting into—if you’re not properly educated to give yourself a chance to make it well beyond that 63% mark.
This is the essence of what takes that 27% percent of successful business owners beyond those first six years. It’s knowing that success is not just measured in numbers alone—but again, when those numbers increase, it sure as hell does feel good, yes or yes?
It’s also understanding that success as a business owner entails reaching down into yourself, your creative spirit, and bringing that out into the world meaningfully. It’s as spiritual as it is material, and we’d all do better for ourselves and our impact on the world to honor that.
What’s your opinion? We want to hear from you!!!

As an artist I want to start a business that will facilitate the commercialization of my production and those of my colleagues. I am concerned about not betraying the art that will become product, and still be successful.. Ultimately I think I'm searching for an equilibrium between money and meaning, art and business, spiritual and material..
I want to see the statistic on the failure rate of the failed entrepreneurs second business. I am willing to bet that that it is less than 63% because the failures are educations.
Mr.Eker you always inspire me to keep going. Thanks to Ambit Energy my success is showing 100%.
Having been self-employed for over 20 years, what I think about constantly is the fact that anyone who has ever succeeded, every product that has ever come to market, has been at the end of a long chain of naysayers and obstacles that caused every person to ask why? – forcing them to keep their eye on the bigger picture and recognize that every NO or obstacle along the road is meant to be there as a lesson. In the moment, it's easy to feel like staying in bed with the covers over our head, but the feeling of accomplishment, even for small steps, is huge once you look back and recognize what you've done.
Somebody can't add . . . 63% + 27% = only 90%.
@Hbpalmdesert, How about adding 10% of businesses which neither failed, nor became successful, but are scraping left-overs from the bottom? Are you happy now Mr. Math Genius?
I've started many businesses before and during my time as a chiropractor. I love being a chiropractor, but with all of the factors that are against healthcare, chiropractors, and insurance especially, I've looked for alternative sources of income. I count all of those experiences as educational. That helped my business reflect what I am today. Win some, lose some, move on.
Thanks for the article.

I enjoy that idea that business is connected with the human spirit of creativity. Steve Jobs was a perfect example of this. I reminds me that the more true I am to my own values and creativity, the more chance my business has of succeeding. Michael Kranes, Resumeslayer.com
Yes! Thank you for the reminder 🙂 To make it as one of the 27% you HAVE to remember the WHY that is motivating your HOW.
Why i'm doing something…!
Thank You for this big lesson!
Love your insight Harv. Timely and to the point. Yet again, just what i needed to hear. I am learning more and more what my WHY is in business. The more clarity i have, the more things start to flow.
Thank you!
This is great. It explains everything I am doing perfectly, and after a few years of struggle with the end not yet quite in sight, it also explains why I wouldn't want to be doing anything else.
Being self employed for about two years now and constantly trying to expand on my knowledge and expertise in my field I have understood that things get tough. The more you want to grow the more challenges and headaches come your way. What has happened is that most people fail to realize that it will take a lot of work to be with the group of 27% and that you're going to have to consistently work harder to get the results that you want.

Yes or yes? What does it mean. No or No?! it is a No or a Yes.
Great stuff as always. I have been in businesses of many kind. My take is if you have the passion just get yourself prepared. Then go and do it without hesitation. Whatever the outcome. they will be valuable experiences for you to equip yourself for future battle. They enrich your life.
To be or not to be is never the question! Yes or Yes!?
Great Teaching, Hav. Keep them coming.
Awesome Harv! Why? Because I said so! Thanks for all I have learned from you over the years! Being in business for ourselves is way more than making money! Being of service to others and feeling great about filling a need is way more powerful than money. But the money's gotta be there, as a resource to do even more good and to keep us moving in the direction of our dreams! Thanks Harv!
Business is an attitude. focus on your product and market. believe in the law of abundance and attraction. spiritual solution works well
Thank You Harv, I really enjoy your Blogs, why would we be in business sometimes…ahhh!, because we are one of the few that for reasons You have given, dreamers perhaps…but better to try and fail than never try, lessions learned along the way are priceless…
Hi Torao
I too am an artist working with stained glass for the past 32 years and I look back and see the compromises that I have made in order to put food on the table. I am not complaining merely refrlecting that I lacked a “bit” of self confidance to put my Art first. Today though I look back not at wasted years or regret but knowing I only did what I thought best at the time. I am now confident and I am excited because I know with certainty what great art is emerging. The lesson if indeed there is one is follow your passion as soon and as much as you can, and be available to learn recieve

Hi Mathew
Thank you so much!
Wow! You said it all right here. If you want to know more about yourself, just start a business.
I had to translate this comment but thank you.
The challenge with creating/starting your own business is that first it needs to be founded on your Soul Purpose–that which you are Divinely called to be and do. Second, you need to invest time, energy and money to learn and understand business principles. One without the other leaves you either happy but broke (living your soul purpose but not getting paid to do so) or rich and depressed (making money at a job/business you hate).
It's not a 'magic pill' to be able to combine both, and schools teach neither. Schools teach you how to get a job and work for someone else, ultimately turning you into a slave for money and being in prison working for someone else.
So before you start your own business, make sure it's first founded upon what you LOVE to do, and then go and learn the principles of running a business. Harv's courses teach you that process…but you've got to be willing to go 'back to school' and learn BOTH!
Thank you for that insight. It has become increasingly clear to me that succes msut of necessity start from within me and then it will radiate outwards. As within so without. At age fifty I am only now beginig to the treu meaning and source of succes.
Tapping into the creative spirit continually is oh so fulfilling T. Harv. You feel good, do good, help others, and generate a feeling of completeness which can't be described.
Thanks for sharing!
